>Navigating the holiday party circuit is impossible without having a serious strategy in place. Think about it… With no plan in mind, how do you expect to pull off attending all of those post-work soirées, especially when going home to change isn’t an option? In need of expert advice on the matter, we turned to one of our favorite fashion girls, Geri Hirsh of Because I’m Addicted. Curious about her sartorial plan of attack during the busiest time of the year, we asked her to share her wisdom with us (and took notes).
>“Less is more,” the blogger explains. “Work with what you’re already wearing, and remember—you don’t need a full face of makeup to look holiday-ready.” With that in mind, we compiled the blogger’s best tips for transitioning your look from day to night. From refreshing your hair and makeup to choosing the perfect statement piece to base your look around (thanks, Who What Wear Collection!), continue reading to see how you can take the stress out of desk-to–holiday drinks dressing.
If you know you have post-work plans and won’t be able to go home and change first, make sure your entire look is prepped and ready to go. That requires choosing an office outfit that can easily be updated with a few key swaps. “I’m all about only bringing a top to change into. I’ll wear bottoms that will look good with both my work shirt and my festive party one,” explains Hirsch. And don’t forget about your makeup and skincare routine in the a.m. If your skin needs some extra TLC, use a facial scrub in the morning to give it an extra boost (nobody wants to do that in the office bathroom).
Do a Quick Hair Change
Your hairstyle is equally as important as your outfit. Sometimes all your look needs is a hair refresh, Hirsch shares: “After taking my hair out of a ponytail, I flip my head over, use Dove Dry Shampoo ($5), and do a three-second spray all over to add texture.” Next, she focuses on the roots. “I lift up a section at a time around my face to add volume and reduce oil, and after about 30 seconds of letting it set, I rub the dry shampoo in with my fingers and brush it out a bit. It gives me a perfectly tousled look.”
Refresh Your Makeup
Office makeup looks usually veer toward the softer side, so if you have plans after work, a revamp may be in order. To that end, Geri suggests keeping a pack of Simple Micellar Wipes ($5) with you to “take off any areas that are oily or caked on from the day; then reapply where necessary.” Hirsch’s go-to party look? Depending on her mood, a bold lip or a cat eye.
Add a Conversation Piece
One of the easiest ways to take your look from day to night is by centering your look around a statement piece. For a post-work event, that might mean swapping out your accessories or shoes. For example, instead of basic black pumps, opt for something more unexpected and festive, like a pair of maroon velvet heels ($38) from our Who What Wear collection.
Pull Out the After-Hours Pieces
When it comes to evening holiday looks, Hirsch’s mantra is to keep things low-maintenance. “This sequin top ($28) is the perfect solution. It’s modern, cute, holiday appropriate, and won’t wrinkle.” Aside from adding an evening-appropriate bag, the blogger has one other tip for taking your look to the next level. “Throw on something other than your office blazer that can elevate your outfit and get you set for evening,” she advises. “Plus, it adds a third dimension, which is a rule I always think about.”
