We all know that great style is not limited to a certain clothing size. That’s where The 12ish Style comes in—a fashion blog by Katie Sturino dedicated to women sizes 12–18ish. In her new column for Who What Wear, Katie will offer up her shopping tips, styling tricks, and outfit inspiration for women who aren’t a size 2.
When skinny jeans first hit the scene in the early 2000s, I wasn’t 100% on board. But, like everyone else, I quickly saw how flattering and versatile they are. I ended up filling my closet with the style in black, white, and every color of the rainbow (remember that trend?!) except true-blue denim, which wasn’t (and still isn’t) my thing.
Of course, fashion being fashion, it’s only natural that skinnies have been pushed aside recently. But while some ladies are quick to run to more adventurous (and voluminous) jean styles, I must admit that I started blowing the whistle to ask “why?”—when these silhouettes are so much harder to pull off, especially in denim.
Here’s one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned since starting my plus-size fashion blog, The 12ish Style: Sometime’s it’s not about what you’re wearing but how you wear it. In other words, styling is everything. While there's nothing wrong with it, some of the standard looks—like the classic skinny jean and boot combo—can feel a bit uninspiring. But those same jeans worn in a fresh way—think dresses as tops, loads of layering, and modern accessories—will have you feeling cool and on trend in no time.
