We all know that great style is not limited to a certain clothing size. That’s where The 12ish Style by Katie Sturino comes in—a fashion blog dedicated to women sizes 12 to 18-ish. In her new column for Who What Wear, Katie will offer up her shopping tips, styling tricks, and outfit inspiration for women who aren’t a size 2.
I love any boots I can comfortably walk all day in, and I also love scouring men’s shoe departments for surprisingly chic, androgynous finds in my size. Combat boots combine the best of both worlds (my pick: this classic pair by Grenson) and are maybe the best thing to come out of the ’90s… other than 90210, of course!
Sure, you can edge them up with skinny jeans, but I prefer them styled with feminine knits for an unexpectedly polished but not too polished look. If you ask me, it’s the new and improved, 2017 version of the ladies-who-lunch uniform. Keep reading for my shopping and styling tips!
A pink sweater and asymmetrical skirt are the perfect foil to a pair of grungy combat boots. Pro tip: Stretchy knits are often forgiving and enable you to size down, so try it on before assuming it won’t fit! A patterned, structured bag adds just the right amount of leopard.
Neutrals are anything but boring when you play with different textures. Shiny combat boots and a chunky cropped knit (I’m wearing last season AYR, similar here and here) keep a classic knee-length bouclé skirt from feeling too “proper.” If you’re on the fence about showing midriff, stick with a high-waisted skirt that hits right at your sweater hemline for an effect that’s more peekaboo than look-at-me.
