What someone chooses to study in college can shed a lot of light onto what kind of person they are—what excites them, engages them, or simply what they’re good at. With that in mind, we decided to find out what some of our favorite stars’ majors were in college. While some were a bit obscure, like cuisine, and others were more expected, like playwriting, they were all equally fascinating to us. Scroll through to learn a little more about these leading ladies with degrees.
Hathaway’s intelligence and talent reveal her high-achieving capacity, so it seems fitting that she studied both English and Women Studies at New York University.
Get ready for a mouthful: This gorgeous catwalker studied Comparative Religion and Eastern Philosophy at New York University before pursuing a master’s degree in Public Health from Columbia University.
When we heard her killer speech on gender equality, we had Watson pinned for a Gender Studies major. But it also makes sense that she would choose to refine her English literature skills at Brown University after playing one of the protagonists in quite possibly the best book-to-film adaptations ever.
Despite her stunning looks and mastery of modeling, Georgia has also spent a lot of time on the other side of the camera, as she studied Photography at the London College of Communications.
Kirke’s artful tattoos and experimental, whimsical aesthetic are dead giveaways that she has some background in visual arts. While she has a degree in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design, her role on Girls tells us she’s also an expert in performing arts.
If Kerry has anything in common with her television character Olivia Pope, it’s her people skills, so it makes sense that she dedicated four years of her life to studying Anthropology at George Washington University.
Acting, fashion design, and… food expertise? We’re not sure if a major in Cuisine from New York University implies culinary lessons or just a mastery of food consumption, but we know that there’s nothing this woman cannot do, so it probably entails both, if not more.
Seeing as she can somehow unify sharp wit, insightful social commentary, and light-hearted humor all into one episode of The Mindy Project, we aren’t all that surprised that Kaling studied Playwriting at Dartmouth College.
Considering her thoughtful, articulate demeanor, it’s not a shocker that Portman received her degree in Psychology from an institution as prestigious as Harvard University. A thorough understanding of psychology probably helped her get into character for Black Swan, too!
Fun fact: Jones was in the same high school graduating class as both Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton. We aren’t sure what their superlatives were, but hers was “Most Likely to Succeed,” and she definitely lived up to it, majoring in Philosophy and Religion at Harvard and then proceeding to star in hilarious TV shows like Parks and Recreation.
