Last week there was a heated debate in our office about whether a certain celebrity’s outfit was fashionable or not, and we noticed that women generally fell into the yea-sayers camp, and the men were almost unanimously opposed. While we generally could care less what guys think of our sartorial choices, we thought it would be interesting to delve further into the question: Are there fundamental differences between what girls and guys consider a stylish outfit? Accordingly, this story was born, and we set out to ask everyone we came in contact with to pick their favorite looks from a wide catalog of celebrity outfits. While the results are far from scientific, we hope you’ll find them intriguing.
Scroll down to see which looks girls and guys both endorse, and the types of outfits the two sexes just can’t see eye to eye on.
We found the types of outfits that are loved across the board have some degree of femininity or sex appeal. They have trend-driven elements to win over the ladies (Hadid’s scarf belt, Chung’s button-front skirt, and Jenner’s fringe detail), but are approachable or alluring enough to please the men.
On Gigi Hadid: Blank NYC pants; Whistles shoes.
On Alexa Chung: Vilshenko top; Alexa Chung for AG Denim skirt; Shrimps purse; Gucci Leather Mid-Heel T-Strap Sandals ($625).
On Kendall Jenner: Givenchy dress and purse; Saint Laurent sunglasses; B-Low the Belt belt.
The below two outfits were entirely female endorsed. Hemingway’s plaid on plaid pattern-mixing and overall tomboy vibe resonated with the ladies we talked to, as well as Richie’s bold satin trousers.
On Dree Hemingway: Rosetta Getty dress and shirt.

Jamie Chung and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s outfits were almost unanimously beloved by the fellows. When we asked the subjects what they liked about the look, we gained the insight that Chung’s night out look is approachable and just a touch alluring, and that Huntington-Whiteley’s garden party outfit has an appealing high hemline.
On Jamie Chung: Aquazurra shoes; Loeffler Randall purse.

On Rosie Huntington-Whiteley: Dior top, shorts, and Mirrors 55mm Cat Eye Sunglasses ($490); Anita Ko bracelet; Stuart Weitzman Nudist Sandals ($398) in Black.
