We called it months ago: flared jeans and similar boot-cut styles would surge back into the spotlight in 2020. (Not to sound annoying, but we told you so.) As soon we saw the denim shape emerge on the S/S 2020 runways from designers like Celine, Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors, we flagged it as one to watch. Why? Because the retro, '70s-inspired silhouette feels undeniably fresh and current despite the fact that it's not really all that new.

That said, we're revisiting the trend because since we first reported on it, and really, ever since 2020 began, celebrities have been clinging to the denim style and their looks are providing us with even more inspiration for how to style outfits with flared jeans. We know flares can be a tricky look to pull off if they're not already in your regular outfit rotation, but that's exactly why we're highlighting the below five outfits because they involve some simple and straightforward formulas that I'll bet you can re-create with a few basics that are likely already in your closet.

From Kate Bosworth to Katie Holmes, keep scrolling to see and shop the latest flared-jean outfits from celebs.

On Kate Bosworth: 7 for All Mankind Fringe Suede Jacket ($1095) and Original Bootcut Jeans ($225); Chloé bag

Flares are inherently '70s, and we love how Kate Bosworth played up their retro vibe by styling them with a suede jacket while her white tank and heeled ankle boots ensure the look is modern.

On Kaia Gerber: Alexander Wang blazer; Marc Jacobs bag; By FAR Sofia Leather Ankle Boots ($562)

Kaia is somewhat of a flared-jeans savant. That is to say that she's churned out some of our favorite flared-denim looks of any celeb to date, and I think it all comes down to her solid choice in wardrobe basics, like the layered turtleneck and structured blazer she wore with them here.

On Eiza Gonzalez: Jimmy Choo pumps; Privé Revaux Siena Sunglasses ($49)

The lesson here: Don't overlook double denim. The classic Canadian tuxedo is the oldest styling trick in the book, and as Eiza's look illustrates, ensures any jean outfit looks effortless and cool.

On Katie Holmes: Wardrobe.NYC Double-Breasted Trench Coat ($1137); Reformation Jackie Ultra High Waist Wide Leg Jeans ($128); Zimmermann Pussy-Bow Silk-Crepe De Chine Blouse ($425); Dorateymur Ankle Boots ($545)

Ahh, another excellent case for wardrobe basics. If you're not sensing a theme here yet, you should be. What makes this Katie Holmes outfit great is just how straightforward it is: a classic trench coat, blue jeans, and black ankle boots do the trick.

While ankle boots are a failsafe shoe choice with flared jeans, Karlie Kloss is making a strong case for styling them with ballet flats and we're into it. She wore them with a basic black top (what did I say about basics?) and a structured blazer.
