5 Things to Know about By Johnny’s Fashion Week Show

Johnny Schembri of By Johnny’s fashion story starts like many you’ve heard before. He launched his label by selling a small collection at Paddington Markets in Sydney in 2009, and momentum grew. And grew. And this is where his story is different. In a few short years, Schembri has succeeded in turning his label into a commercial success—with a huge range of stockists (including Myer), and a strong stable of loyal fans (including celebrities like Rachael Finch and Jodi Gordon).

What makes By Johnny stand out? Bright colours, interesting cuts, and use of patterns. The By Johnny girl doesn’t want to blend in.

Ahead of his Fashion Week Australia show today, we sat down with designer Johnny Schembri to find out everything you need to know. Keep scrolling, and then shop some of our favourite pieces from the current collection.

Who What Wear Australia: What’s your inspiration behind your Resort collection?

Johnny Schembri: My collection is really inspired by the ease of the season—think holiday dressing with fluid hemlines and a lot of movement throughout the collection. I also have a key floral print featured in the collection—the Liberty Print, which I love and is inspired by Liberty London.

WWW: What pieces are you most excited about?

JS: I am most excited about the graphic, over-sized floral placement pieces, and the metallic pleated pieces with draped flounces attached.

WWW: What has the lead up to fashion week been like?

JS: It is always an exciting time with some challenging moments. This season, with the introduction of new fabrics and treatments, I have learnt a lot more about fit and explored new garment finishes. It has been challenging at times, but has been a lot of fun too.

WWW: What key trends will we see in your show?

JS: Bold graphics, relaxed shapes, pockets, and metallics.

WWW: What is your #1 hero piece from the collection and how would you style it?

JS: The hero piece from this collection would be the ‘Flounce metallic pleat skirt’—this style has great movement and shape, it’s one of my favourites! I would style this back with either a 'Frill Sleeve Backless top' or the matching ‘Pleat Flounce Harness top’.
