It wasn't that long ago that a debate raged amongst the upper echelon of fashion and pop culture critics concerning whether or not Beyoncé was a true fashion icon. The New York Times' Vanessa Friedman argued that no, she's not, and there's at least one powerful fashion editor who disagrees: Carine Roitfeld.
Roitfeld put her foot down on the issue in a huge way—by putting Beyoncé on the cover of the fifth issue of her CR Fashion Book. In images shot by French fashion photographer Pierre Debusschere and guest creative-directed by Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci, Knowles shows off a different, darker, and more avant-garde side of herself. The results are stunning.
