While putting together our best dressed list can be a bit of a doozy each year—often stirring up some friendly debates in the office—the 2015 honorees were no-brainers. Whether they were taking notable risks on the red carpet or leading the way in the trend department, each of today’s ladies and, err, gentleman consistently showed their sartorial prowess—and had you talking too. So without further adieu, we present you with this year’s winners!
While we love the excitement surrounding the trifecta that is the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Oscars, these red carpets aren’t typically the setting for daring fashion moves—at least until Emma Stone showed up. With a major film on the ballot, Birdman, Stone came out of the gate strong in a (gasp!) custom hand-beaded jumpsuit with bow sash by Lanvin, followed by a Dior Haute Couture tuxedo-inspired dress with (gasp again!) a sheer paneled skirt, and then opting for a glamorous finale in a chartreuse Elie Saab number with a thigh-high slit and open back. She may not have won the award for Best Supporting Actress, but she certainly won the red carpet—and our hearts!
If this year taught us anything, it’s that models are the new celebrities, and Gigi Hadid proved her influence is just as strong as, if not more than, a Hollywood A-lister’s. If Hadid wore it, you and the rest of the world wanted to wear it too. White sneakers? Check! Leather overalls? Check! Mirrored sunglasses and statement outerwear? Check, check! The 20-year-old’s looks run the gamut of off-duty cool to sleek and refined, lending outfit inspiration aplenty all year long.
We announced Kendall Jenner as our Model Muse honoree in our 2015 Street Style Awards last month, but it’s also worth pointing out the model’s superior after-hours style. Plunging jumpsuits, leggy frocks, and thigh-high footwear spell sexy with a capital S, but Jenner pulled off all these looks with a certain chic sophistication—no easy feat! Date night, girls’ night, or fashion party, nobody is doing it better right now.
Kate Bosworth is good, and we mean REALLY good. And here’s why: The actress manages to look incredibly put together and effortlessly cool at the same time in every scenario. At the airport, music festival, or even running errands, Bosworth’s West Coast–meets–East Coast sensibilities translate into enviable ensembles that work for the office, weekend, and beyond.
Selena Gomez didn’t just launch a new number one album this year; she had a complete style revival (see what we did there?) too. Along with a new, grown-up perspective on life and dating came a more sophisticated, modern wardrobe, complete with sultry silk dresses, sleek separates, and striking prints. And after seeing this stunning red carpet moment, it’s clear the mega star is just getting warmed up.
Jessica Alba built a billion-dollar empire—The Honest Company, that is—in three years, so to say the actress is a major #girlboss seems like an understatement. Instead, we like to refer to Alba as a modern mogul, one who continues to push the envelope in the working world, all the while redefining the standard for professional attire. No boring skirt suits here! Instead, Alba takes care of business with a 9-to-5 wardrobe that is just as hardworking and beautiful as she is.
The film gods gave us a wonderful gift this year: the return of Sienna Miller. The British actress made stylish appearances at both the Golden Globes and Oscars and reminded us of her style-icon status as a jury member for the Cannes Film Festival, where she donned everything from a kite-inspired Valentino Haute Couture dress to a tiered ruffle Gucci frock. Dare we say the star is back and better than ever? Yes!
Lily-Rose Depp doesn’t just have impeccable genes going for her (she’s the daughter of Johnny Depp and model Vanessa Paradis); she has the adoration of the fashion community, namely Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel, too. Famous name and beauty aside, the 16-year-old has been building up plenty of cool-girl cred on her own, with an editorial debut in Oyster magazine and an Instagram account that documents dreamy escapades with her stylish friends.
Chrissy Teigen falls into a handful of best dressed categories—haute mom-to-be and master of denim, for example—but we couldn’t help but notice that the model’s airport game was particularly strong this year. After all, how many women can make silk trousers or a completely sheer blouse work for the plane? The seasoned traveler is taking globe-trotting to a whole new level of chic, one flight at a time.
It’s not fair that Harry Styles looks better than us in Gucci womenswear, but c’est la vie. The One Directioner is easy on the eyes—a young Mick Jagger, anyone?—and we can’t help but appreciate his affinity for bold suits, silk button-downs, and embroidered bomber jackets. Swoon!
We dedicate this last category to three ladies who have long excelled in the outfit department: Olivia Palermo, Rihanna, and Alexa Chung. Not only are these influencers Who What Wear best dressed list regulars, but they also continue to excite us with their expertly executed ensembles year after year.
