It's never taken me so long to write a story, but this one has been in the works for a good six months. It all started before my wedding in Europe earlier this year. I've had my naval pierced for as long as I can remember. It was one of those things I begged and begged my parents to let me do in early high school until they finally relented. It was 'cool' as a 14 year old, but when I hit my early 20s, it was time to rip it out. It was suddenly something I was very conscious of, and embarrassed by.
Fast-forward to June this year, and I became obsessed with making it a permanent fixture on my body again. The only problem? I couldn't go back to the silver crystal bar I once wore. Plus, I had a deadline—visions of wearing it on the beach in Greece, poking out through a white linen two-piece the day after my wedding. Ridiculous, I know, but when you're planning an overseas wedding, you can't control much aside from your outfits.
All I wanted was a fine gold sleeper or bar, but it proved almost impossible to find. It wasn't until I arrived in Athens that I found one at a local jeweller.
With everything '90s making its return, isn't it time the belly ring comes back too? I'm curious about what's taking so long. We've seen everything from slip dresses, to chokers, and even bike shorts do their time again. But the belly ring? Nothing. ASOS, which is generally a good indication on whether something is 'trending', had a few novelty styles when I initially searched. Now there's nothing. I had some luck at piercing parlors, but what I really wanted, was to find something by one of my favourite designers—something that really fit in with my aesthetic. Jacquie Aiche? Sarah & Sebastian? Anita Ko? Please answer my fashion prayers.
Maybe that's why we were all turned off it—it became more a point of sex, than style.
But now, it's different. It's not about wearing it with low-slung jeans and tiny crop tops. It's about letting it poke out the top of high-waist pants, or through a sheer cut-out. Barely there, with just a hint of shine.
If you're feeling the belly ring for summer, my advice is to go simple. A plain metal bar or sleeper. Throughout all my searching, I only found one place, Body Vision Los Angeles, that had what I was looking for. You can read on to peep the style, but if you know of any other brands, I'd love for you to slide into my DMs and let me know. HMU on Instagram @amandastav.
