Eight weeks ago, the ballot papers for the same-sex marriage vote were sent out across Australia. And today (12.6 million votes later) the long-awaited result of the people’s survey has been announced: The nation has officially voted YESfor marriage equality. And according to POPSUGAR Australia, this is what will happen next.
"A majority yes vote will see a private members' bill be introduced in parliament to legalise same-sex marriage in Australia, Malcolm Turnbull said in October. Members of parliament will then be free to vote on the bill, which was developed by West Australian Liberal senator Dean Smith. If successful, the Prime Minister has said that parliament should resolve the issue before they break for Christmas."
The Sydney Morning Heraldhas quoted Malcolm Turnbull as saying, "Strong leaders carry out their promises. Weak leaders break them." Here’s to hoping our prime minister uses his position of influence to help steer the parliament toward equality for all.
