There's no question in anyone's minds that 2016 was a particularly big year for athleisure. Thanks to high-fashion labels like Vetements reviving the dressed-down sportswear trend and It girls like Gigi Hadid making sweats a dressed-up staple, athleisure made its mark on the fashion industry and is proving its staying power as we head into the New Year.
Highsnobiety, a website that covers sneaker-related news, has just released its Highsnobiety Crowns, honors given to the best of our favorite sportswear-meets-streetwear brands after tallying up votes and analyzing data. Coming in first place in its Most Relevant Brand of 2016 category is none other than Adidas, "garnering more than twice the votes of the second-place winner, [Supreme], and shockingly nearly seven times more votes than its biggest competitor, Nike," the site writes. Highsnobiety attributes Nike's gold status to the maturation of its Originals division, its diversifying fashion portfolio, and key collaborations (calling out Kanye West). The old-school sportswear staple and household name beat out some of fashion's heavy hitters like Gucci, which came in third, and Vetements, which won the Editors' Choice.
