If you don’t already recognize the name, Abbey Lee Kershaw (who now simply goes by Abbey Lee) has been a trendsetting face in fashion for years. The Aussie native made quite the splash on the international fashion scene after she got her big break meeting legendary photographer Mario Testino only a week after moving to New York City. Soon after, Abbey Lee graced the runways of such big names as Alexander Wang, Balmain, and Valentino and became a regular fixture on the cover of Vogue Australia. Now, the supermodel is catapulting her undeniable appeal to the big screen as she makes her debut as one of the newest—and most captivating—faces in Hollywood. (You may have caught her in the recent, action-packed blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road.) And to add to her next professional chapter, the starlet is the frontwoman to DKNY’s new, sexier fragrance, Be Delicious. Abbey Lee sat down to talk to us about her latest campaign, her timeless style influencers (she adores Courtney Love), and how she dresses to feel comfortable in her own skin. Keep reading to read the interview and see the beautiful behind-the-scenes photos from her DKNY shoot.
Be Delicious is an iconic fragrance. How does it feel to be a part of the Be Delicious legacy?
The campaigns have always been beautiful, featuring great models. In particular, Lara Stone has always been a favorite of mine, so to follow her is especially exciting. It’s amazing to be a part of the next chapter of this story.
This is a provocative campaign. Do you have any tips for feeling sexy in your own skin?
Be comfortable in your own skin and dress in something that makes you feel confident, like yourself. And that can change from day to day. One day I may want to wear a miniskirt, and then the next I’ll wear jeans and a T-shirt. Pay attention to how you personally feel sexy.
Do you have any favorite models in the industry?
There were a lot of girls from my era that I always looked up to when I started, like Natasha Poly. She was the queen of everything. She is flawless with an incredible work ethic. Modeling is a whole new ball game now with the social era. Girls now are creating an image before they are working as models. They can gain work because they have a high volume of followers.
Modeling is a tough and competitive world. What would you say is key for surviving in the industry?
You must find something else that makes you happy and fulfills you besides modeling. You need to know who you are and live by that fully.
Who are your style icons?
Courtney Love as well as classic women like Lauren Bacall are my style icons. I also really like certain eras. I grew up in the ’90s, so I find that defines my style a bit.
Do you have a favorite shop in NYC?
I love the convenience of shopping online.
What is your favorite pair of shoes?
I have worn my black ’90s Courtney Love boots daily for about six years.
What about your favorite fashion trend?
The laid-back approach! I love a good T-shirt and jeans.
Do you have a favorite brand to wear off the runway?
I’ve always been a fan of Donna Karan and DKNY, so it’s an honor to be a part of the family.
Is there a ’90s trend you’d like to see make a comeback?
I don’t know if I would want them to make a “comeback,” but I love my combat boots. Personal favorites are always a classic!
Do you have any fashion obsessions? If so, what are they?
I am completely obsessed with the ’90s aesthetic, but maybe I am biased.
Tell us something that people probably don’t know about you.
I do a fabulous Cher impersonation.
