Styling Tips-August
Tuesday, August, 14, 2012 Bear with us, dear readers, as we venture into high school science class territory for a moment. When compiling this month's edition of Styling Tips, an Isaac Newton quote came to mind: "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." For those of you who aren't feeling particularly scholastic, Newton just meant he was able to gain new knowledge by building on the expertise of pioneers that came before him. While the seven ladies in today's story are not, per se, prone to philosophical musings, they are undeniable trendsetters, and in the spirit of Newton's quote, we can certainly improve our personal style by learning from their sartorial genius. From Anne Hathaway's twist on the classic floral dress to Michelle Monaghan's brilliantly balanced ensemble, take notes on their savvy styling tricks and your wardrobe will surely thank you!

Tip #1: Make a body-con miniskirt appropriate for daytime by adding a pair of casual white lace-ups.
A figure-hugging leopard mini is usually a go-to choice for nights out, but Jessica Hart proves this piece can actually work for daytime too! In New York last month, the model made her sultry vintage skirt work for a lunch date by adding sporty white Nike lace-ups and a basic Reformation sweater, which ensured her look was less club scene and more weekend-friendly.

Tip #2: Experiment with a neon blouse and metallic shoes for a visually intriguing outfit.
Color-shy readers may be hesitant to test-drive this tip, courtesy of blogger Zina Charkoplia, but let us assure you that the results are well worth it! As if her shocking neon Uterqüe top wasn't head-turning enough, Charkopia finished off her look with a pair of metallic gold oxfords from Zara, resulting in a fearlessly stylish outfit we can't wait to emulate. We also appreciate how she tempered these bold hues with a pair of gray H&M shorts and a black Balenciaga bag.

Tip #3: Mix bold, contrasting hues in simple silhouettes for an easy take on the colorblock trend.
Since colorblocking shows no sign of slowing down, we were enthralled when we came across Poppy Delevingne's easy-to-imitate approach to the trend. Snapped at Warner Music Group's pre-Olympics party in London last month, the model contrasted an orange mini with a silky purple blouse, both by Safiyaa, and completed the ensemble with Rondini sandals and Mulberry's Lily Ostrich Bag ($2700, available here in fuchsia). We love how she chose basic pieces in brilliant hues for a striking yet simple outfit!

Juicy Couture Sloane Blouse ($158), Topshop Orange Mini Skirt ($60), Stella McCartney Tive Wool-Twill Mini Skirt ($635).

Tip #4: Combine a chambray shirt with high-waisted trousers and loafers for a top-notch tomboy look.
We always love a good borrowed-from-the-boys ensemble, so it comes as no surprise that we were smitten with this stylish civilian's outfit as seen on Stockholm Street Style. Her chambray button-up, navy trousers, and tan loafers are the epitome of menswear chic, but we appreciate how she still manages to accentuate her figure with the pants' high-waisted silhouette.

Tip #5: Balance print trousers and a bright bag with black staples.
Colorful patterned pants and a vividly hued bag are fantastic summer trends to try, but these look-at-me pieces call for more understated accents to balance out the look. Michelle Monaghan executed this styling trick perfectly at a party celebrating Dannijo and Tucker in Los Angeles last month. We love how her basic noir tank and simple Christian Louboutin Leather Pumps ($795) allowed her eye-catching Tucker pants and bright Coach Legacy Leather Tanner Tote ($498) in Sunflower to take center stage. Her Dannijo Katya Necklace ($495) also made a statement without overpowering her perfectly proportioned ensemble.

Tip #6: Give a ladylike floral dress an unexpectedly cool finish with bright, oversized sunnies.
Searching for a way to update a classic floral frock? Simply look to Anne Hathaway, who arrived at the Today Show in New York last month wearing a printed Erdem Resort 13 dress accessorized with a pair of red sunglasses and noir Prada pumps. We adore how her timeless sheath and sleek shoes gave off a sophisticated vibe, while her cool sunnies lent a fresh, playful flair to her ladylike outfit.

Tip #7: Transition a sundress by adding a lightweight sweater and boots.
If you'd like to wear your favorite sundress well beyond the sunny season, allow us to turn your attention to the outfit actress Krysten Ritter wore at the airport in Los Angeles last month. She kept cozy for her flight by layering a sheer Paper Crown sweater from the F/W 11 collection over Corey Lynn Calter's Bella Tie Front Dress ($242) in Multi, and added vintage Justin Roper boots, which is the perfect transitional tip to keep in mind come fall!
