Tip #1: Mix spring favorites with textured finds.
As the artistic director for her family's fine jewelry line, Gaia Repossi clearly has an eye for the luxe things in life. Even better: she knows how to put this skill to work, as she so aptly demonstrated at a Ralph Lauren dinner party in Paris. To attend this chic soiree fete-ing the opening of the RL flagship store in the City of Light, Repossi selected Celine's Bonded Leather Dress ($4500) from the S/S 10 collection, an Isabel Marant jacket, Chanel's now-famous clogs, and of course, accessorized with an Ere by Repossi Ring ($6860) and a Twin Ring ($6099). We love how she mixed spring's most celebrated footwear with her all-weather leather and further integrated an of-the-moment furry coat for a luxe and intriguing pre-fall look. To try out Repossi's upper-crust ensemble for yourself, we suggest starting with a camel leather dress like Marc by Marc Jacobs' Glove Leather Dress ($758), which, due to its all-season versatility, is an excellent investment piece; otherwise you can snag a serious steal with H&M's camel version ($129)! Next, you need a textured piece, so reach for that faux fur in a contrasting neutral hue, like Alice + Olivia's Chris Faux Fur Vest ($396), and top off your look with Love Quotes' Hand Knotted Tassel Scarf ($85).
Tip #2: Try groomed curls instead of lank locks.
If there's one thing we absolutely love about Rose Byrne (aside from her cutthroat lawyer persona on Damages), is that she gives great hair. Case in point: her choice of gorgeous full waves at the Crest 3D White-sponsored Breakthrough of the Year Awards earlier this month. The starlet's soft curls contrast perfectly with her sober color palette and bold red lips. The coif also adds a glamorous touch to her unfussy outfit, which consisted of Vanessa Bruno's Draped Dress ($444) and Velvet and Leather Jacket ($836), plus Brian Atwood's Black Suede Marlo Pumps ($635). When recreating the small-screen star's look for yourself, opt for a chic jersey dress with a touch of drapingÂ--we like 3.1 Phillip Lim's Draped Melange Jersey Dress ($350) or BCBG's Draped Dress ($188)Â--then pile on the intrigue with Topshop's Waterfall Jacket ($125) for an effortlessly sexy cocktail look. Finally, nail the Australian stunner's glossy locks by wrapping sections of your strands around Sultra's The Bombshell 1" Curling Iron ($130), add a touch of Alterna's Caviar Anti-Aging Dry Shampoo ($20) to give your roots some healthy volume, and seal in the shine with a few spritzes of Bumble and Bumble's Bb.Shine ($35) to guarantee lustrous, lust-worthy curls. As for that glamorous red-lipped pout, big spenders can go for Tom Ford's Private Blend Lip Color ($45) in any of his three reds, or you can reach for Maybelline's ColorSensational Lipcolor ($7.50) in Are You Red-dy for a quick, red-carpet ready fix!
Tip #3: Experiment with '50s and '70s styles.
It seems like every designer is nodding to one decade or another this season, but two of the vintage-inspired trends hitting high on our radar are flare jeans and retro-style sundresses. Thus, when we came across this photo of the achingly cool Dree Hemingway and her friend Lily Seidler, Senior Coordinator of VP Relations at Prada, at the Endangered Species Coalition Fundraiser For The Gulf Pelicans in New York earlier this summer, we swooned for their cutting-edge interpretations of these vintage silhouettes. Looking every inch the perennial stylesetter she is, Hemingway opted for vintage wide-leg Chloe jeansÂ--we like 7 for All Mankind's Trouser Jeans ($189) in Summernite or See by Chloe's Flared Jeans ($122)Â--and Celine's Black Velvet Open Tie Clogs ($790) for her feet. (Her exact shoes are tough to track down, so try Jessica Simpson's Dany Platforms ($98) for a more wallet-friendly option.) Hemingway further accented her look by selecting Prada's Faille Bag ($650), which provides just the right pop of color and a dose of hippy-kitsch to her whole ensemble. The lovely Prada exec, on the other hand, decided to channel an earlier decade in a Prada Popline Print Dress ($755), Clutch ($1350), and Shoes ($690);she further highlighted her adorable figure and added textural intrigue to her look with a woven belt. We're absolutely mad about this silhouette for hot summer days and suggest Floreat's Chromatic Canvas Shirtdress ($148) for an equally pretty print. Then, finish your ensemble with either Lauren Merkin's Exclusive Eve Floral-Print Clutch ($165) or Kitson's Blue L'Aquila Clutch ($48) depending on your decade-inspiration of choice and you'll be ready to RSVP yes to the fashion cognoscenti's call.
Tip #4: Pair a sturdy nude clog with a little dress.
When it comes to the Olsen family, stylesetting prowess clearly runs in their genes, as the youngest member of the fashion-forward tribe, Elizabeth Olsen, illustrated when she attended a screening of Mao's Last Dancer in New York earlier this month. Olsen looked absolutely adorable in her Kimchi Blue Shortsleeve Printed Silk Surplice Dress ($78), which she flawlessly accessorized with a waist-cinching belt. Additionally, we appreciate the rising star's use of Swedish Hasbeen's T-Strap Clogs ($250)Â--which she smartly selected in a nude hue, to give her legs a longer lineÂ--to ground the ethereal print of her summery frock. While all of Olsen's outfit is still available for purchase, we also recommend Kors Michael Kors' Claudia Suede Platform Clogs ($250) in Tan, or you can always go for the perpetually popular Jeffrey Campbell Charli Platform Clog ($148) in Natural.
Tip #5: Use lots of pastel pieces in one look.
Unlike a bevy of brights, which can sometimes be overpowering, a few well-placed pastels easily enliven an outfit. Case in point: the ensemble Giovanna Battaglia so deftly modeled at the Bulgari Man fragrance launch party in Milan earlier this summer. The L'Uomo Vogue editor is the third stylesetter featured today who opted for a retro-inspired sundress, but we love how the Italian maven du mode made it her own with a thin belt, gilded Lanvin flats, and Fendi's Small Selleria Peekaboo Bag ($2750) in Pomegranate. Use Battaglia as inspiration and snatch up Kimchi Blue's Full Circle Dress ($48) and Corso Cosmo's Festive Flats ($60) for an ensemble ideal for touring foreign cities or chicly running to a daytime lunch.
Tip #6: Start wearing fall's hottest color now.
While we love a good neutral-colored tee, camel coat, or black patent heel, one of the things we're most excited about for fall is the resurgence of red! While this bold hue burst forth in the form of luscious leathers on the F/W 10 runways, we love the way Rachel Bilson got ahead of the sartorial curve at a dinner for the designer Vanessa Bruno earlier this summer in sunny LA. The red Vanessa Bruno skirt is the perfect way to incorporate this emerging trend and we adore the way Bilson went for a full-tilt French look by pairing it with JET's Striped Tank ($64) and black jacket from Bruno's S/S 10 collection. The trendsetter's embellished vintage bag provides even further intrigue, while her of-the-moment Marni clogs keep her outfit summery and fresh. Ready to recreate this cute outfit for your next night out? Simply pair your favorite striped top with BCBGeneration's Seamed Miniskirt ($68), Silence & Noise's Chiffon Open Jacket ($68), and Ecote's Antiqued Metallic Clutch ($38) for a touch of shimmer and a Bilson-approved cocktail look.Â--Liza Kaplan
