Summer Barbeque

Summer Barbeque
Monday, May, 23, 2011 Memorial Day is just around the corner, which means the start of barbecue season is officially upon us! We adore this time of year for a number of reasons, but chiefly because barbecues are basically the ideal summer event. They involve all of our favorite things--day drinks, grilled foods, and sunshine--plus they're always relatively relaxed, and who doesn't adore a stress-free social situation? That said, while the stakes might be low, that doesn't mean you should turn up in any old thing. Nope, now is the time to break out some of your cutest spring and summer essentials--just be sure to keep things semi-casual. That might sound like a conundrum, but we promise it's not, just check out today's selection of anything-but-basic barbecue necessities to see what we mean!

1. 3.1 Phillip Lim Teeny Triangle Bikini ($250)
Not every barbecue involves a dip in the pool or the ocean--but most of our favorite ones do! Assuming there will be some sort of water element to your barbecue, you'll need to have a fabulous suit on hand, like this papaya bikini from 3.1 Phillip Lim. The combination of the pink and black striped straps and the always-accommodating side-tie bottoms makes this adorable suit a must-buy!

2. Urban Outfitters Chevy Stripe Round Wayfarer Sunglasses ($16)
Since most barbecues take place during the day or afternoon, you obviously need some great sunglasses. While you can certainly break out a chichi pair, these bright striped sunnies from Urban Outfitters are also an excellent choice. Even better: they're extremely affordable, which is nice if you tend to misplace your shades at these events like we do!

3. Mulberry Beach Tote ($695, 212.453.4722) in Trippy Tiger
Even if your style is more mild than wild, you're sure to adore this dynamite tote from the maestros at Mulberry. The juxtaposition of the timeless silhouette and classic leather details with the pink tiger print is chic and sure to elevate any outfit, making it well worth the investment!

4. Equipment Mina Blouse ($148, 212.473.3980) in Berry Pin Stripe
We're suckers for some of summer's traditional-yet-festive prints, which is why we all went nuts for this watermelon and white button-down. The pin stripes are so barbecue appropriate and the cheerful colors will work well with everything from basic white to high-contrast hues to your favorite worn-in denim cutoffs.

5. Juicy Couture Scalloped Linen Romper ($158) in White
Unless you are a totally messy person, wearing white to a barbecue isn't just acceptable, it's totally adorable--especially if you pick this ridiculously sweet romper from Juicy. We appreciate its delicate, scalloped details and streamlined silhouette, and plan on wearing it with a few of our favorite vibrant accessories!

6. Current/Elliott Stiletto Pants ($198) in Nantucket
If you haven't purchased a pair of red, cropped jeans yet, you simply must do so immediately. They are definitely a summer essential, and no one does them better than Current/Elliott. We adore their slightly faded, brick red hue and skinny silhouette, so trust us when we say you need to buy a pair right now!

7. J. Crew Silvana Sandals ($98) in Rustic Barn
While we love a wedge for this social event--skinny heels are an absolute no-no, as they'll look too precious for the occasion and are sure to sink into the grass--for maximum comfort, go for a flat. Instead of wearing something bland, we suggest spicing things up with a rouge sandal, like this style from J. Crew. Wear these shoes with an all-red ensemble or use them to punctuate a pastel pink or white outfit, either way, they're sure to look totally cool!

8. ASOS Linen Pleated Full Skirt ($46) in Pink
Now before you protest our suggestion of a poofy party skirt, let us make our case for this festive piece! Unlike a body-con mini, a full skirt is easy to sit in, not to mention the fact that its voluminous silhouette hides a multitude of sins. Translation: you can plop down on the ground and eat as much as you want while wearing this skirt--no wonder we love it so!

9. Chanel Le Vernis Nail Color ($25) in Morning Rose
Because barbecues call for sandals and sandals require pedicures, we decided to include an excellent polish in today's round up. While we do love Chanel's other new hue--the bright yellow Mimosa--our money's on Morning Rose, at least for this event! It's a warm and rosy pink with tiny bits of gold shimmer: the perfect pick for your little piggies!
