In the past, earth-friendly clothing reminded us of peas and carrots: you know they're good for you, but they're not very fun. But happily, those days are long gone, as designers like Stella McCartney, who uses all organic cotton and vegan accessories, are upping their game and creating eco-sensitive options that are truly fashionable. It's not just about burlap bags and recycled bangles anymore; there are some really amazing pieces on the market right now. So in honor of this year's Earth Day, we've spent the last few weeks rounding up our favorite green-minded products--like an ikat-print across-body bag, a pair of colorful cutoffs, and the perfect spring blaze--all for your sustainable shopping pleasure. But of course, that's just the tip of the iceberg! Read on for all of our green fashion picks and stay tuned for some truly amazing eco-friendly beauty products tomorrow!
Alex & Ani Green with Envy Romance Cocktail Ring ($48)
Your Who What Wear editors certainly love their baubles, so we were beyond thrilled when we found this gorgeous ring from the thoughtful jewelry line Alex & Ani. Featuring gold plating made from recycled metal from local mills and a beautiful domed stone, this enchanting cocktail ring evokes an antique-like luxury and we can feel good about wearing it. Ever better: it's not too fancy or elaborate, so it's a statement piece that works well with both minimalist and fancy evening ensembles!
People Tree Carlotta Floral Dress ($110) in Blue Floral
We've long been fans of the ecologically sound brand People Tree--as part of the World Fair Trade Organization, the company works closely with 50 Fair Trade groups in 15 countries--and their beautiful designs. And while it's always difficult to narrow down our favorite items to just one noteworthy piece, this year we're currently coveting the Carlotta Floral Dress. Made in India, this sleeveless, swingy frock is perfect for weekend fetes, especially when worn with a denim jacket and sandals.
Sprout Eco-Friendly Diamond Dial Watch ($52) in Purple
As much as we adore all of the eco-friendly clothing out there, we're equally jazzed by the array of green accessories, like this lovely watch by Sprout. Instead of using synthetic plastic and glass, Sprout constructs their timepieces out of corn resin--a renewable resource that is 99% biodegradable--and mineral crystals. The results are pieces like this quirky purple watch, which is also quite luxurious, thanks to the mother-of-pearl dial and diamond detailing on the face. This playful wrist accessory is the perfect way to liven up your spring neutrals, so be sure to snag one today. If the purple isn't your cup of tea, don't miss the collection's six other vibrant shades, including orange and pink.
Matt & Nat Hendrix Ikat Vegan Handbag ($165)
Just when we thought mundane sacks were our only earth-friendly bag options, we came across the insanely cool Matt & Nat Hendrix Bag! Not only is this 100% vegan carrier environmentally friendly--the label is made from cork and the lining is made from recycled water bottles--it's also quite fashionable. The Southwestern-inspired ikat print and tiered flap are visually intriguing, plus, it comes with a removable chain shoulder strap, so it can double as a clutch for your evening fetes. What more could you ask for?
M2F Brand Denims Mini Shorts ($75) in Starflower
Cutoff shorts are a key part of our spring/summer wardrobe, which is probably why we're so excited about M2F Brand Denims' Mini Shorts. M2F Brand Denims produces colored jeans and shorts that are faded like traditional indigo jeans, so every pair is perfectly worn-in. Our favorite is the minty-green Starflower wash--the color is achieved by soaking the shorts in a dye bath that uses 50% less water and energy than traditional textile dyeing procedures--but five other bright hues are also worth checking out. For the ultimate afternoon BBQ or music-festival outfit, we recommend pairing these guilt-free cutoffs with a colorful tank and strappy sandals.
Olsenhaus Galaxy Heels ($255) in Black/Mesh
Green girls everywhere will certainly appreciate these fashion-forward heels by Olsenhaus. They're made from recycled faux suede and mesh and have a supremely cool design; it's nice to finally see some edgy eco-friendly footwear! Perfect for balancing this season's ultra-bright looks, we imagine wearing them with a sultry cocktail dress for a girl's night out.
H&M Conscious Collection Scalloped Jacket ($49.95) in Blush Recycled Polyester
H&M is one of our favorite go-to shops for affordable, on-trend fashions, so we were as pleased as can be to hear about the debut of their Conscious Collection--a line for women, men, and children made from environmentally-adapted and greener materials. We're totally smitten with the line's refreshing white color palette, tiered dresses, breezy tops, and floaty skirts, but it was the Scalloped Jacket that really piqued our interest. Definitely sweet and feminine, this lightweight blazer has a wonderful Chloe-esque vibe we can't wait to wear all season long.--Jessica Baker
