Designer Handbags 5/08
Here at the WhoWhatWearDaily.com headquarters, monitoring the state of celebrity handbags is one of our many self-appointed duties-and we take it quite seriously. At any given moment, our office is collectively taking stock of what shapes and styles are trending upwards and which bags are the subject of fashion-forward chatter.
However, despite our vigilant watch, the process of selecting the celebrities (and their bags of choice) is anything but simple. We caucused and debated for ages before settling on a few of our favorite totes, satchels, and hobos for today's story. You'll find the results of our quarterly handbag review above, plus all the purchasing particulars below!
Pixie Geldof D&G Dolce & Gabbana Multi Zipper Jeweled Messenger Bag ($1499)
Our first handbag is as distinctive and individualistic as its owner, Pixie Geldof. The D&G bag is festooned with multicolored stones and studs and is divvied up into four zippered compartments. We're also mad about the ultra-long strap, which is adjustable-a thoughtful detail, no? While there's really nothing on the market that compares to this purse, if you're hankering for a boxy brown bag, the Linea Pelle Angie Speedy ($295) just might fit the bill.
Mary Kate Olsen Dior by John Galliano Karenina Bag ($2000 and up)
As per usual, Olsen's got her hands on next season's must-have bag. In this case she's carrying a black, top handle, frame bag from the Tolstoy-inspired Christian Dior Fall 08 runway collection. It will be available in mid-June, so make sure you're on the wait list now (310.859.4700). Until then, check out the Alexis Hudson Grand Bastille ($550) bag; it's a top handle tote with a similar ruched style.
Ashlee Simpson Thomas Wylde Pharaoh Bag ($2500)
Newlywed and new-mom-to-be Ashlee Simpson Weintz (or ASW as we'll here fore refer to her) showed off her posh punk style with Thomas Wylde's black leather and silver stud Pharaoh Bag. The exact bag is available at Amalga in New York (212.334.1014) and a related style-the Cleopatra Tote ($2300)-can be found online now. Alternatively, check out Frye's Harness Hobo ($233) for a similar chain strap and subtle stud. Intuition's Patent Tote with Pyramid Studs ($70) is another savvy option.
Kate Moss Mulberry Bayswater Bag (from $995)
Glossy Mossy loves her Mulberry bags (seriously, she's got at least four in rotation currently), especially the classic Bayswater style. Her palomino ostrich version usually clocks in at around $3995, but the simple natural leather styles start at a more reasonable (relatively, people!) $995. An even more equitable option is Nine West's Bow Dacious Satchel ($99). The pale gold color is definitely in a different direction, but the shape is spot-on.
Rihanna Burberry Medal Studs Warrior Bag ($3195)
Of all our lovely ladies, Rihanna might be carrying the season's most talked about bag. Her medal-embellished khaki-colored bag created a buzz from the moment it came down the Burberry runway, much like the house's studded sandals last season. If investing in this stellar spring item is not in your cards, Loeffler Randall's Bedelia Bag ($840) is also an excellent choice.
