The Film Character You Should Channel This Fall

Currently Channeling is a revived monthly series that makes a shoppable connection between fashion and cultural references such as film and music. If you’d like to see something channeled, let us know in the comments section.

When Harry Met Sally… is one of the best things to come from the 1980s. Every autumn, I unearth my DVD and pop in the one hour and 36 minutes of glorious cinematic chemistry that is Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan starring opposite each other as Harry Burns and Sally Albright.

Though the plot, casting, and acting are all fantastic (more on that below), one of my favorite aspects of the film is the wardrobe—particularly Sally Albright’s. It’s every menswear-inspired woman’s dream come true and, unsurprisingly, feels just as relevant in 2016.

See below for a stylish look back at this 1989 classic and shop picks inspired by the film.

The film begins with Harry and Sally embarking on a road trip from Chicago to New York after graduating college. Sally is beginning journalism school in the city, and Harry—who is dating a friend of Sally’s—is headed there for work. Along the way, the two contentiously discuss the relationship between men and women, including the idea that the two can never truly be friends because of sexual tension. And, of course, there’s the iconic scene in which Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm in Katz’s Delicatessen.

After the two part ways, we pick up five years later when they bump into each other on a flight. Another five years pass, and Harry and Sally find themselves in the same bookstore. From that point on, the film chronicles their developing friendship (and eventual romance) while introducing quirky, lovable characters along the way, including Marie, played by Carrie Fisher.

To put it briefly, it’s everything you’d want out of a romantic comedy and more. Keep going for more stills from When Harry Met Sally… and to shop picks inspired by the film.

This collegiate look on Sally Albright is head-to-toe perfection.

Remember this scene? If not, here’s a refresher.

There’s nothing quite like dressing for autumn in New York City.

Couples who sweater together stay together.

Proof that sparking a romance in a bookstore is more probable than you think.

Fashion aside, how amazing are Meg Ryan’s bangs?

At the end of the film, Harry professes his love for Sally at a New Year’s Eve party. It makes me cry every single time.
