We may have shed a tear or two during the finale of The City¬--so glad it's coming back for a third installment!¬-- but we're making the best of this season's closer by paying homage to the drama-filled show's fashionable leading ladies. In addition to our Style Spotlight story on Olivia Palermo, we're rounding out our coverage by turning our attention to another fan favorite: Whitney Port. Now you might recall Port's first day at Teen Vogue (back in The Hills era), when she was rudely criticized for wearing an outfit that was "too matchy-matchy"¬--well, dear readers, times have changed. Today, the reality-star-turned-designer is well-known for taking risks and making clever style choices that include everything from girly mini dresses to shiny metallic items to printed pants. So in honor of this smartly dressed, always accessible muse, we have rounded up a few Port-inspired pieces that capture her adventurous sense of fashion. Enjoy!
1. 3.1 Phillip Lim Cropped Boxy Pullover ($525, 310.358.1988)
As we mentioned earlier, our style subject is not afraid to take risks when it comes to fashion, which is precisely why we selected this cropped fringe sweater from 3.1 Phillip Lim. The top is in perfect keeping all of the textured elements (think: shearling jackets and chunky knits) on the fall runways, a trend that's sure to be huge. And although it might be a bit warm to start wearing this comfy piece now, it will surely keep you nice and cozy as the temperatures begin to cool down in the next couple months.
2. Dannijo Daryn Earrings ($320)
We are big fans of designer teams¬--especially when they're siblings, like Sienna and Savannah Miller of Twenty8Twelve and Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte¬--so it's no surprise that we appreciate Dannijo, a chic jewelry line hand-crafted by sisters Danielle and Jodie Snyder. Based out of New York, the duo is responsible for a wide range of eclectic designs, including these hauntingly beautiful earrings. Port has an appreciation for statement jewelry, so we think she would be unable to resist these shoulder-grazing chandelier earrings, which offer the perfect combination of elegance and gothic edge.
3. MMM Polka Dot Crop Shirt ($72)
You might be hesitant about trying a crop top at first, but when paired with high-waisted maxi skirts or voluminous trousers, these abbreviated shirts and tanks are oh-so stylish for warm-weathered outings. Port has already been spotted in a few variations, but for a dressier take on this trend we like MMM's Polka Dot Crop Shirt. Thanks to its modest neckline and structured shape, you could wear this top to a creative meeting or evening fashion event.
4. Salvatore Ferragamo Ballet Shoes($620)
Comfortable footwear is a must for Port when going from one designer appointment to the next in the big city. In lieu of a basic black flat, we thought these Salvatore Ferragamo Ballet Shoes were a spot-on choice to complete a sophisticated ensemble. We particularly like how the gray and black houndstooth pattern and structured bow amplifies the shoe's timelessly chic design. If you're not quite ready to invest in this wardrobe essential, French Sole's Welsh Flats ($150) are a superb look-a-like alternative with a more budget-friendly price tag.
5. Whitney Eve Cyd Shorts ($283) in Sparkle
Port is not afraid to incorporate a little shimmer into her wardrobe, whether that's via the Tucker top she wore back in February at the Gen Art The New Garde fashion presentation in New York City or in her own designs. These darling sequined shorts from her Whitney Eve F/W 10 collection have a fun silver sparkle and dressy-yet-comfortable cut (they have a moderately high-waist and a wide-leg), which makes them a great option for a night out with the girls. Unfortunately, you won't be able to get your hands on this exact pair until August, but you can give your next evening ensemble the right amount of shine and pizazz with Erin Kleinberg's Dylan Sequin Shorts ($117), or try a sparkly skirt iteration like J. Crew's Metallic Sequined Bell Skirt ($275). Just pair them with a neutral blouse and statement heels for a complete Port-inspired look.
6. Rebecca Minkoff Boyfriend Bag ($295)
We have always had a special place in our heart for Rebecca Minkoff's casually luxurious line of apparel, handbags, and accessories. And while we adore the iconic Morning After Bag ($595), it is the newly released Boyfriend Bag that is a perfect fit for our style subject's rotation of high and low fashions. This petite two-tone leather purse has a removable chain strap that can be worn on the shoulder or across the body, ideal for Port's on-the-go moments or an easygoing afternoon stroll.
7. Nars Duo Eyeshadow ($32) in Rajasthan
One thing is for sure: Port is a natural beauty with a golden glow and flawless skin. That said, she also knows how to amplify her assets subtly, which is why this new Duo Eyeshadow from Nars is a perfect pick. The lighter hue (glazed almond) is a smart choice for daytime, while the darker shadow (charcoal) is deliciously sooty, ideal for evening events.¬--Jessica Baker
