Now that we're well into August and the official start of fall is less than a month away, it's time we start packing up those beloved summer staples to make room for cozy coats, metallic separates, maxi skirts, and, of course, a new crop of handbags! While we don't necessarily indulge in a designer bag every season, we always pay careful attention to the new options on the market. This time around, our rigorous searching turned up a plethora of cool shapes and styles, which made us wonder: what can we expect our favorite trendsetters to carry this autumn? Now, after weeks of research, we're finally ready to unveil the results of our well-though-out matches in our annual edition of What Would She Wear: Fall Handbags. Honestly, we love all of these covetable carryalls, but which on-trend style is a must-have for you? Read on for all the need-to-know details and be sure to tweet us your top picks!
Chloe Sevigny/ Proenza Schouler PS11 ($2038)
Move over PS1, there's a new shape in town, and it's called the PS11. Yep, the masterful design duo behind Proenza Schouler has done it again with their latest creation, and we predict it will be a favorite among celebrity and civilian tastemakers alike. As for our celebrity match, well, something about the PS11's structured shape and cool buckle hardware makes us think of Chloe Sevigny's cutting-edge sensibilities. And the fact that she is already a supporter of the designers' creations leaves us even more convinced that she would be a huge fan of this shoulder bag. Whether we're right or not remains to be seen, but until then, you can always pre-order this white-hot style at Luisaviaroma.com (where it's available in saddle brown leather) or pick up the black leather version when it hits select Barneys stores. If you can't bear to wait and the serious price tag isn't in your budget, please note that Rebecca Minkoff's Buckled Up Boyfriend Leather Crossbody Bag ($295) comes in the same compact shape and shade, but it's available for a fraction of the cost.
Alexa Chung/ Mulberry Neely Tote ($2650)
Oh, how we adore animal accents for fall! We've already begun stocking up on everything leopard¬--from shoes to belts to scarves¬--and, as you might have guessed by now, are saving up every last penny for the lust-worthy leopard version of Mulberry's Neely Tote. The bag's appeal is practically universal, thanks to its structured, ladylike shape (so smart for fall) and the feline print (gives it a hint of sauvage chic), but of all the possible people who could carry it, we hope to see it on Alexa Chung's arm. Though she's already got a Mulberry namesake bag, we think this tote would be a smart choice for the stylish lass. It would look amazing juxtaposed against a casual army jacket, but it's also polished enough to wear with dressier outfits too, making it the perfect piece for her¬--and us! And while we consider the Neely a worthy investment, Topshop's Large Leather Leopard Bag ($180) is a wallet-friendly option that is equally desirable.
Kate Bosworth/ Chloe Darla Leather Tote ($1670)
It's difficult to pinpoint just one particular shape and style of handbag that Kate Bosworth is partial to, but based on our careful observations, we can bet that all of her bags are strategically selected to suit her needs for that day. A chic clutch for an evening out, a petite across-body purse for a music festival, and a slouchy shoulder bag for running errands are just a few of the of-the-moment carriers seen in her daily rotation, which is why we have in her in mind for this new-for-fall Chloe tote. The gleaming red leather and flap-top shape give this bag a touch of '60s sensibilities, a look that's so big this season and happens to be beloved by Bosworth's stylist, Cher Coulter!). Between the burnished gold hardware and the vintage-inspired design, we think the bag's perfect for Bosworth's brand of chic and could totally imagine it on her shoulder at some fun fashion event. To find the tote in this exact color, check out select Saks Fifth Avenue stores; otherwise the chestnut version is currently available online. Now if you're looking to get your hands on a similarly structured shape, we suggest checking out DKNY's French Grain Leather Shopper ($295), but if a slouchier style is more your taste, then Marc by Marc Jacobs has you covered with the Puckered Mouse Gabi Flap Shoulder Bag ($448).
Kate Moss/ Jerome Dreyfuss Carlos Bag ($2385) in Python Noir
We've always been fans of Jerome Dreyfuss' chic purses because the French handbag guru produces incredibly cool, high-quality pieces¬--just what we'd expect from the husband of Isabel Marant! This season, the designer's luxurious Carlos Bag stole our hearts: who could resist its rich and beautiful python texture? Not us! We also have a hunch that style icon Kate Moss would be smitten with the Carlos too. Our reasoning is simple: Moss is fond of mid-sized carriers and this bag's boxy shape is in perfect keeping with her handbag needs. Also, the understated tote comes in a variety of cool colors (blue, gray, eggshell, mustard, red, green, violet suede, beige and red python, leopard, and black calfskin), perfect for the supermodel's ever-changing tastes! If this shopper, which will be available on LaGarconne.com soon, is out of your price range, Martine Sitbon's Patchwork Shoulder Bag ($395) and MICHAEL Michael Kors' Top Zip Tote ($198) are two great guilt-free substitutes
Kate Hudson/ Gucci 1973 Medium Shoulder Bag ($980)
When you're constantly on the go and juggling a successful acting career with motherhood like Kate Hudson, the last thing you want is a fussy handbag. Luckily, Gucci created a sleek shoulder option that is elegant without being over the top, perfect for city dwelling. The light brown suede and seventies-influenced shape is in keeping with Hudson's bohemian sensibilities, but offers a more refined look than her typical go-to fringe bags. Not to mention, the single shoulder strap will leave Hudson's hands free, which is a necessity when chasing around a six-year-old kid. If this exact color is not your cup of tea, you're in luck! The bag is also available in red and black leather, or a beige and ebony diametric fabric, so be sure to pre-order yours today. Can't wait? You can get a similar fix with High Fashion's 4807 Natural ($198) without the budget-busting price tag.¬--Jessica Baker
