New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week
Friday, February, 17, 2012 This season, New York Fashion Week played host to two types of noteworthy fashion shows: the F/W 12 designer runways, of course, and that of the impeccably dressed attendees. While the former surpassed our expectations and more with a truly enviable assortment of cold-weather ensembles-Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, and Proenza Schouler continue to be standouts in our mind-the latter was, as usual, equally inspiring and exciting to gaze at. We can't help but admire all of the thoughtfully curated ensembles assembled by our favorite stylish insiders and fashionable celebs; they, too, are worthy of the spotlight, hence today's What They Wore story. From Alexa Chung's casually cool overalls to Zoe Saldana's bright metallic separates, we rounded up our top ten favorite looks from NYFW. So grab a pen and paper, dear readers, because you're definitely going to want to take some style notes!

WHO: Liya Kebede
WHAT: Spotted front row before the Edun F/W 12 show on Sunday.
WEAR: Model/actress Liya Kebede's ensemble is like the sartorial equivalent of a mullet: sophisticated and chic on top and weekend casual on the bottom. Now, while we can't say we're fans of the '80s haircut, we can say we're head over heels for Kebede's uptown-meets-downtown look. You have to admit there's something so unexpectedly stylish about grounding a fancy dress and outerwear-in this case, Edun's Weave Print Belt Dress ($498) and a vintage coat-with Isabel Marant's Betty Leather and Suede Sneakers ($680). The outfit is cool, youthful, and splendid for a number of fashion events!

WHO: Hanneli Mustaparta
WHAT: Perusing the Pamela Love F/W 12 presentation last Friday.
WEAR: Hanneli Mustaparta might arguably be the most photographed person at NYFW, and it's easy to see why. Whether she's sporting a bare-midriff ensemble or the most amazing pastel blue coat, the blogger/photographer/model consistently executes the latest trends in new and exciting ways. So what was our favorite look of the week? The mix of cool blue hues she wore to the Pamela Love presentation! Mustaparta skillfully melded the edgier spirit of her cobalt blue Acne bomber jacket and Tabitha Simmons boots with the elegant vibe of her Alexander Wang Lydia Clutch ($460, available here in black) and Miu Miu gingham earrings. And for that, we must praise this tastemaker!

WHO: Olivia Palermo
WHAT: On the red carpet of Sunday's 2012 Bloglovin' Awards.
WEAR: We can't help but get a bit giddy in the presence of Olivia Palermo; the fashion plate is incredibly gorgeous and sweet, and the fact that she's got style in spades isn't lost on us either! Per usual, Palermo turned up in a number of notable outfits during NYFW, but the look she put together for the Bloglovin' Awards remains an office favorite. We like that the ensemble's focal point, Tibi's Cheetah Coat ($485), almost doubles as a dress and is perfect for the season's contrast pockets microtrend. In another expert move, Palermo opted for a less-is-more approach in the accessory department, choosing a gold cuff, sleek Lulu Guinness clutch, and cap-toe No Name pumps.

WHO: Rachel Zoe
WHAT: Supporting Marc Jacobs at his F/W 12 show on Monday.
WEAR: It doesn't matter if she's working backstage to put on her first-ever runway show or sitting front row, Rachel Zoe is always dressed to impress. At the Marc Jacobs F/W 12 show, the stylist/designer/yummy mummy was the epitome of high glamour in an emerald green drop-waist dress by the designer and a faux goat hair coat, which rested luxuriously on her shoulders, from her own F/W 12 collection. A smattering of elegant black accessories, including Christian Louboutin heels and a Hermes clutch gave her evening ensemble a sophisticated finish.

b>WHO: Dakota Fanning
WHAT: Photographed front row at the Rodarte F/W 12 show on Tuesday.
WEAR: One of the things we enjoy most about attending the Rodarte show each season-in addition to the delightfully eccentric designs-is seeing what the Fanning sisters are wearing. While Elle was sadly nowhere to be found, we spotted Dakota front row in a spectacular mix of gold and pale blue hues. Thanks to its exaggerated sleeves and metallic fabrics, her Rodarte Painter's Smock Top (price upon request, 617.266.3158) and Painter's Smock Pants (price upon request, 310.550.5900), brilliantly paired with Miu Miu glitter heels, oozed a youthful and modern Cinderella-like look we adore.

WHO: Alexandria Hilfiger
WHAT: Making her way to her seat for the Timo Weiland F/W 12 show on Sunday.
WEAR: Mixing textures and prints is no easy feat to pull off, which is why we have to admire those that can do so with ease, like Alexandria Hilfiger. The NAHM designer got it right at the Timo Weiland show when she styled a peek-a-boo Nary Manivong black lace top with a Tommy Hilfiger shearling leather jacket, vintage floral-print midi skirt, Yves Saint Laurent leopard-print belt, and Charlotte Olympia green velvet shoes. The finished look was a tough-meets-sweet combination befitting the trendsetter's fashion-forward sensibilities.

WHO: Amanda Brooks
WHAT: Spotted at the Alexander Wang F/W 12 show on Saturday.
WEAR: As the Women's Fashion Director of Barneys New York, Amanda Brooks has access to some of the most covetable clothing and accessories on the market, which, in conjunction with her expert styling skills, inevitably leads to sophisticated, effortlessly chic outfits. This time around, she won our affection with a smart mix of relaxed separates-specifically a Celine oversized striped button-up worn untucked with a pair of distressed J. Crew jeans-which she polished off with an olive green Balmain coat and Proenza Schouler's PS11 Mini Classic Bag ($1675) in Saddle. The result: a front row-worthy look we're dying to emulate.

WHO: Zoe Saldana
WHAT: Leaving the Prabal Gurung F/W 12 show on Saturday.
WEAR: We can't say enough good things about the look Zoe Saldana put together for the Prabal Gurung show. The perennially chic tastemaker killed it in said designer's turquoise satin blazer and floral-print pants-a wonderful nod to the season's floral metallic look we love so much. True, we're smitten with the pastel color palette and shimmering fabric, but we also appreciate her decision to incorporate a casual white v neck t-shirt, which kept the overall look appropriate for daytime.

WHO: Jenna Lyons
WHAT: Hanging out before the Altuzarra F/W 12 show on Saturday.
WEAR: Leave it to J. Crew President/Creative Director Jenna Lyons to construct what might easily be the week's best transitional ensemble. The cozy getup seamlessly interweaved cold-weather essentials, including an Altuzarra parka and slim Ann Demeulemeester leather pants, with a few spring must-haves, like a J. Crew denim jacket and Proenza Schouler's neon PS11 Mini Bag ($1675). We think the final result was pitch-perfect, don't you agree?

WHO: Alexa Chung
WHAT: Arriving at The Kills show at the Standard Hotel's Boom Boom Room last Thursday.
WEAR: We've secretly been waiting for someone to bring back overalls for a while now, so you can imagine how thrilled we were when we came across Alexa Chung sporting a pair. Though she erred on the casual side, Chung teamed the chillaxed one-piece with a pale yellow button-up and Celine's silver metallic heels for a nonchalant outfit that oozes style!-Jessica Baker
