It's a well-known fact that the fashion world is peppered with two-person teams¬--like The Row's Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Proenza Schouler's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, and Rodarte's Kate and Laura Mulleavy to name a few¬--but for today's What They Wear, we decided to focus on directional duos of a different sort. Instead of spotlighting designer pairs, we're paying homage to a few of our favorite sets of stylish friends. A combination of in-demand actresses, top trendsetters, and industry pros, these dynamic compadres piqued our interest with their always-unique outfits and very personal takes on the latest trends. Read on for all the details on their sartorially savvy ensembles and how you can achieve their enviable looks!
Vanessa Paradis & Diane Kruger
When Karl Lagerfeld throws a soiree, you can bet that a slew of fashion's finest will be in attendance, which is precisely what happened in St Tropez two months ago at an unveiling of his latest project: the short film, Remember Now. Lagerfeld favorites Vanessa Paradis and Diane Kruger were spotted together at the garden party looking like the epitome of European chic in ensembles from Chanel's spring collection. Paradis preferred a more modest look in pants and red leather jacket, while Kruger showed off some skin and her competitive spirit¬--guests formed teams and played bocce after the buffet dinner¬--in a summery dress and sandals. (Kruger's accessories are also worth noting; we love her picnic basket bag and the way she completed her adorable outfit with a fedora hat.) If you pick up Express' Round Plastic Sunglasses ($30), Joie's All Over Lace Drew B Tank ($158), and Zac Posen for Target's Moto Leather Jacket ($199) in Red, the end result will be a Paradis-inspired look that is magnifique! However, if you are in the mood for something a little more Kruger-esque, Wink's Banded Dress ($209), Cole Haan's Air Halsley Sandals ($148), and Bebe's Straw Black Banded Fedora ($29) will surely do the trick.
Alexa Chung & Pixie Geldof
They say that great minds think alike¬--a statement seemed to be particularly true for British confidants Alexa Chung and Pixie Geldof during London Fashion Week. The duo, seen here front row at House of Holland's F/W 10 show, turned up wearing denim-centric looks that are both complementary and perfect for their very different sensibilities. Chung displayed her denim-on-denim flair with an Acne Soldier Shirt ($269, 212.625.2828) over Balenciaga jeans, and finished off her outfit with charcoal socks and Chanel cap-toe heels. If you love this ensemble just as much as we do, then pair Urban Renewal's Chambray Shirt ($48) with BDG's Medium Blue Wash Denim Leggings ($39) for a seriously stylish iteration. Unsurprisingly, Geldof's look was a little more punk rock, thanks to her House of Holland for Levi's crop top and black Topshop jeans. Her boots, which she picked up from the Camden Market in London, and vintage necklace gave this cool-girl outfit an extra bit of edge, which we totally love! Digging the vibe of Geldof's denim interpretation? Just pick up Topshop's Denim Lace Bra ($32), Madewell's Legging Jeans ($95), and Jeffrey Campbell's All Lace Up Combat Boots ($220) for a rough and rugged look of your own.
Leigh Lezark & Caroline Sieber
Once again, Chanel brings out the seriously sartorial! Just one day after the illustrious garden party mentioned above, another fashionable twosome was spotted at the French fashion house's Cruise 11 presentation: Leigh Lezark and Caroline Sieber. The Chanel beauty ambassador/DJ and star stylist both opted for head-to-toe Chanel ensembles in a similar color palette of gray and black. And while their frocks are worth mentioning, we find their fancy footwear is equally intriguing. Instead of a basic black pump, Lezark selected a pair adorned with floral appliqués for a complete ladylike look, while Sieber stunned us with her strappy wedges. The caged detailing hits just below-the-knee, adding a sexy element to her chic ensemble. For a similar take on this polished look, try pairing Pleasure Doing Business'Duo Tone Sweetheart Dress ($308) with Martin Valero's Zenith Jeweled Pumps ($160), or Redflare's Wanda Wrap Dress ($66) with Belle by Siguerson Morrison Specchio Gladiator Sandal Boots ($250).
Eugenie Niarchos & Tatiana Santo Domingo
When it comes to looking fabulous together at all times, few do it better than best buds Eugenie Niarchos and Tatiana Santo Domingo. Two months ago, the inseparable jetsetters arrived at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Benefit Gala in France wearing floor-length ensembles. Niarchos wore an ensemble designed by Emilio Pucci's creative director, Peter Dundas, for the storied label's spring collection. And while Niarchos selected a sheer beaded top and black skirt, Domingo opted for a burst of color with her bejeweled Missoni gown. To mimic this globetrotting duo, we suggest pairing American Apparel's Spandex Stretch Floral Lace Bodysuit ($44) with L'Agence's Washed Silk Long Skirt ($288) for a Niarchos-inspired outfit or Seneca Rising's Blurred Print Maxi Dress ($200) with Free People's Patterned Seed Bead Stretch Waist Belt ($28), which will give you a glamorous gypset look for all your fancy affairs.
Naomi Watts & Stella McCartney
Stella McCartney's high-profile friends (think Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson) never fail to support her, so we expected to see stylish pairs galore at the designer's recent resort presentation in New York. Happily our hunch was correct, as you can tell from this picture of McCartney and pal Naomi Watts. The duo were snapped wearing head-to-toe McCartney creations of course; the designer wore a blue satin jacket from resort with jeans from her summer collection, while Watts opted for an ivory dress and yellow satin sandals (from Resort 11 and 10, respectively). While McCartney's designs may be out of your price range, don't panic, as we have found some thrifty look-a-like alternatives for you to enjoy. For an evening option à la Watts, pair a simple white frock like Alice + Olivia's Tessa Silk Knotted One-Shoulder Dress ($396) with an electric neon shoe like Classiques Entier's Trellis Sandals ($100); it is a great way to add a splash of color to a neutral ensemble. However, if you are in the mood for a casual look with chic accents, look no further than J. Crew's Super 120s Peplum Jacket ($188) in Navy, J Brand's Low Rise Capri Jeans ($120), and Splendid's Very Light & Fashionable Draped Tank ($49).
Dree Hemingway & Kate Lanphear
Last, but definitely not least, we spotted model Dree Hemingway and Kate Lanphear, ELLE's Style Director, at the MELISSA Plastic Dreams Rooftop Party in New York City early last month. When describing their enviable looks, day and night is the first thought that comes to mind; Hemingway's vintage dress with eyelet detailing has a soft, romantic feeling versus Lanphear's all-black, edgy Balenciaga top, J Brand 942 Low-Rise Pencil Leg Jeans ($158) in Jett, and Alexander Wang boots. When the occasion calls for a more ladylike frock, answer with a light and flowy iteration like Free People's Antiquated Gypsy Maxi Dress ($189), and pair it with Jeffrey Campbell's Syd Perforated Suede Booties ($190) for a complete look. We do love a black-on-black ensemble as well, so to get Lanphear's enviable edge, just combine Acne's Kex Skinny Jeans ($140) with Helmut Lang's Skel Blazer ($410) and Joux Joux's Pikes Ankle Boots ($268).¬--Jessica Baker
