What are the best jackets to wear for summer?

Jessica Baker

A: While we love the casually cool look and feel of summer dressing, we can't seem to part from our beloved third pieces. (That's stylist speak for anything you'd layer over a t-shirt or tank, like a vest or jacket!) Here are four summer lightweight jacket options that are seasonally suitable and perfect for breezy summer nights.

Must-Have #1: Oversized Army Jacket
Pair an intentionally too-big army number with a sweet floral dress or playful romper. While army green happily lends itself to a brighter summer palette, feel free to embrace a cool khaki or bold black jacket. Roll the sleeves and pile on some girly gold bracelets and necklaces to balance your look.

Must-Have #2: Paper Thin Leather Biker
A boyish biker jacket works in every climate and for every occasion--it's an absolute necessity. To beat the heat in this zipper and chained favorite, opt for a lightweight or "feather leather" one that can layer without adding too much bulk. While black is always a crowd pleaser, a brightly colored biker jacket is absolutely brilliant for the dog days of summer.

Must-Have #3: Relaxed Jean Jacket
Another classic third piece is the good old jean jacket. To make this timeless piece feel both fresh and more relaxed, go big. We love the look of a jean jacket that's roomier in the body and hits at the waist or below. This looks great paired with shorts or skirts and crisp tees and tanks in adventurous prints and bright colors.

Must-Have #4: Longer Lightweight Blazer
To sharpen your otherwise carefree summer ensemble, grab a blazer that is longer and lighter that usual. It should nod to a classic men's blazer, but should be narrower in shoulders and lighter in fabric. This looks chic with a tea-length fitted dress or mini skirt and tee look. Push the sleeves up and steer away from anything with a tapered waist or fancy fabric.
