Calling It: This Will Be 2017's Next Big Ankle Boot Trend

Allyson Payer

Just when you were starting to think about sandal season, a new ankle boot trend for 2017 comes along—but it's one we think is appropriate year-round. We recently spotted two indicators that strongly point to Western ankle boots being the next big thing. While they've been slowly creeping their way onto fashion girls' feet, it's seeming more and more like 2017 is shaping up to be the year of the Western and cowboy boot trend. So what are the indicators?

For starters, Net-a-Porter posted in the If You Buy Only One Thing page of its most recent issue of The Edit that a cowboy boot is the must-have boot style to buy right now. It calls out Saint Laurent's logo-emblazoned splurge-worthy pair, saying the style "will be as relevant in 10 years’ time as they are now." That, and the fact that this style only gets better with age and is surprisingly versatile is enough to make us seriously consider investing in a pair ASAP. (Even the ultra-directional Vetements is in on the trend).

The other indicator that the Western ankle boot trend will soon be huge is the news that veteran boot purveyors Frye have just launched a Western Reissue collection. According to Footwear News, the collection is "inspired by [the brand's] archival looks," dating back to the 1940s. The 11 boot options are embellished with studs and feature authentic Western details in a variety of neutral shades—perfect for the cowboy boot purist.
