W.W.S.W.: Lou Doillon

Known for her nonchalant cool and a truly individualistic way of putting herself together, Lou Doillon is an international fashion icon of the highest order. Perhaps it’s genetics; after all, she is the daughter of French director Jacques Doillon and Jane Birkin (and half-sister of Charlotte Gainsbourg), so clearly she comes from stylish stock.

Still, bloodlines alone can’t account for Doillon’s status in the fashion industry. A model in her teen years, Doillon has already been the face of Chanel, Givenchy, and Miu Miu and is widely considered a major muse. Now she’s trying her hand at the design process and has created a line for the British denim brand, Lee Cooper. The collection bears Doillon’s style signatures, like ultra high-waisted shorts and jeans, and debuts in Harrods next month.

We look forward to seeing what path Doillon takes in the design world and have our fingers crossed that we’ll get to see lots of great outfits from her during the upcoming Paris Fashion Week. Until then, we’ll content ourselves with today’s What Would She Wear story, featuring our favorite pieces for Doillon. Read on for the details of our imagined outfit!

1. Cutler & Gross for Mulberry Betsey Sunglasses in Peach ($500)
The handbag geniuses at Mulberry recently added another must-have accessory to their repertoire. They’ve collaborated with renowned Brit eyewear company Cutler & Gross and are offering an amazing line of shades for your purchasing pleasure. There are so many insanely gorgeous shapes to choose from, but we thought the hint of cat eye in the Betsey frames would appeal to Doillon.

2. Miu Miu Brocade Dress ($1790)
When not wearing motorcycle boots and boyish trousers, Doillon can be found in body-conscious (but rarely bare) dresses. We could see her going for Miu Miu’s slightly retro, almost prim, mini dress for its offbeat patterns and because it would show off her long legs.

3. Azzedine Alaia Gladiator Stiletto Sandals ($1229)
These Alaia gladiators are insanely expensive and crazy hot, so they’re just the sort of serious sandals we’d see on Doillon. While nothing’s quite a perfect substitute (how could anyone replace Alaia anyway?), the Harper Wedge Gladiator Sandal by Twelfth St. by Cynthia Vincent ($405) or the Cancun Buckle Gladiator Sandals from Dolce Vita ($138) have a similar look.

4. 7 For All Mankind Sophie Jeans in Durban ($158)
Doillon’s designs for Lee Cooper involve lots of high-rise pants and shorts, so in that spirit we picked these high-waisted skinny jeans in a wonderful medium gray rinse. They’ve got a bit of stretch for comfort and the rise is only moderately high, so they’ll flatter most figures. Take a cue from Doillon and wear them under feminine dresses.

5. MAC Mattene Lipstick in You Say Tomato ($14.50)
When it comes to her maquillage, Doillon exercises extreme restraint, preferring to go au natural than with a face full of makeup. She does, however, make an occasional exception for red lipstick. This tomato red matte lipstick from MAC comes in a super slim tube and has a creamy texture.

6. Hayden-Harnett Marlowe Mirror Bag ($375)
One of the noteworthy aspects of Doillon’s style is her affinity for slightly unusual pieces and obscure finds. The simple, chic, and anything but obvious lines of this Hayden-Harnett bag fit the entire criterion for a Doillon-inspired accessory.

7. Topshop Military Style Jacket ($120)
Doillon embraces the tomboy side of her style by incorporating menswear-inspired pieces in her wardrobe. The stern lines and Balenciaga style of this Topshop jacket are an excellent counterpoint to girly items like the Miu Miu dress.

The girl who posted before me has no idea what she is talking about.

Not to discredit her in any way (I think she looks cool, frankly) but she's a waif and everyone knows there's something quirky in that, something that lends coolness and chicness to otherwise ordinary clothing. And, if only for this one outfit, this is the case with her. It's really not unlike something that despicable Paris Hilton might wear.

I really love this post and everything about it!! Bravo!

Lou's hat looks like it's about to fall off. Maybe that's why she has to walk with her head tilted forward? And bag looks oddly like a mini red beanbag chair. But odd is better than dull and tacky like Lauren Conrad, I suppose. Love the gray jeans and military jacket, though.

loving the dress and the jacket. yummers!

I think some people are being a little mean about dear Lou... I think her style rocks, and all the stuff wwwd chose was spot on. A few cheaper items would have been nice, but those sandals are fantastic, as is the jacket and the dress. Definitely an improvement on the Lauren Conrad fiasco... thank you wwwd!

I'm loving the shoes and bag. The jacket looks really cute too!

I don't think I have what it takes to pull of the sunglasses and shoes, but the rest are fabulous. I'm totally lusting over the Topshop jacket. On another celeb, Lou's entire outfit would look plain ridiculous, but she makes it work. Love it! Great post WWWD!

NOW this is what I like - she is definitely a girl to watch, and although I'm not loving the pic you guys chose, but the ALAIA is a-m-a-z-i-n-g. I rock my moms vintage alaia skirt all year long baby! I'm surprised you guys didn't feature neck scarves and more layering..i feel like that's her signature. Keep up the good direction WWWD....

not that great pic of her...gorgeous gladiators though! visit my blog myohmgirl.blogspot.com

I love the outfit you featured! A little pricey, but still good inspiration. Doillon's style is SO much cooler than some of the usual featured celebs on WWWD.

i love love love this post, although its not a guest editor post its a total upgrade from all the Lauren Conrad/LC types i think you should also include more girls like her that have a unique style and way of mixing different pieces together.

i see her all the time walking around the boulevard saint germain, she has this sort of homeless-chic look that suits her really well

I love how she looks like a crazy bag lady in the picture he picked. Awesome. I love all the picks in this post.

It's funny to observe the difference in comments on this site for someone like her versus someone like Lauren Conrand. Lou is definitely stylish in her fashion, but her hair is not.

I love all of these pieces, she really does have some style. Kay: that is in dollars not euros, euros is € not $ and you just take the amount in pounds (£60 here) and double it to get dollars, so $120.

        Posted by: Alicia  |  2008-02-25 08:14:54

Me Likey!! I'm in love with the military jacket but is that $120 USD or $120 EURO?
