Whether they're filming on location, jaunting between coasts, or just checking out the latest international hotspots, our favorite fashionable ladies are always packing their bags for trips galore. These seasoned travelers know exactly what to wear when embarking on an excursion, but for the rest of us, creating an outfit that's pragmatic and chic is about as easy as getting an unrequested upgrade to first class. The struggle is over, dear readers, because today we'll show you how to mark up your passport in style. From layovers marked with Louis Vuitton (à la Miranda Kerr) to transatlantic flights in a trench (per Kate Hudson), our picks for
What They Wore: Airports are prime examples of how to look like a trendsetter—even in an airport terminal. Now, without further ado, we invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy a little in-flight inspiration.
Miranda Kerr
Australian stunner Miranda Kerr is a knockout on several fronts: in addition to being outrageously beautiful, she's also mastered the high/low fashion mix. Seen here en route to her homeland, Kerr chose an easy black jersey dress for the foundation of her outfit, which she toughened up with a high-impact Doma
Leather Bomber
($547) and a fail-safe pair of Chloe boots. Like many of our other spotlighted jetsetters, Kerr added a dash of personality to her outfit via well-chosen accessories, including a vintage scarf and a Del Moro chapeau. Delia's
Sara Plaid Scarf
($20) and Manhattan's
Panama Hat ($88) remind us of Kerr's selections.
Rihanna
The fusion of fluorescent lighting and airplane air can suck the style out of the best of us, but, despite these glaring odds, Rihanna manages to travel flawlessly. The popstar started with classic pair of J Brand
Cigarette Leg Jeans ($159), then added Marley's
Stripe Button Shoulder Sweater ($295) and some nineties-inspired
Samantha Sunglasses ($310) by AM Eyewear. We love the one-two punch of the graphic accessory and top: it's casually cool and totally memorable.
Anne Hathaway
When it comes to glamorous globetrotting, Anne Hathaway is certainly one to watch. Like many of our other stylish-celebrity references, Hathaway knows that an on-the-go girl needs a great trench (in this case, the
Degradé Heritage Trench ($2395) by Burberry Prorsum). In addition to picking the perfect outerwear piece, Hathaway also makes smart accessory choices. Her dark brown Frye
Harness Boots
($208) and fringed scarf, similar to Sir Alistair Rai's
Raj Karma Scarf ($122), transform a basic outfit into an interesting one. Last, but not least, she slicked on a fresh coat of bright lipstick: it's the perfect finishing touch for her fuss-free, polished look.
Kate Hudson
Kate Hudson is known for her bohemian style and always creates outfits that have a wonderfully global vibe. So it's no surprise that she turned up at Los Angeles International Airport looking worldly and chic in a classic Rag and Bone Great Trench, which is available in
navy cotton ($598) or
gray silk
($735). We love the way she rolled up her sleeves and added an oversized Native American-inspired bracelet: these two small tweaks modernize the timeless trench. You can find a cuff that's just as covetable on sites like eBay.com, where we found this deliciously lovely
Navajo Turquoise Bracelet ($90). Hudson completed her travel ensemble with a bright white scarf and matching pair of sunglasses. We suggest combining Emporio Armani's
Embossed Scarf ($195) and Ray-Ban's
Oversized Sunglasses
($139) to create your own version of Hudson's style.
Chloe Sevigny
Not even jet lag can curb Chloe Sevigny's cool! Seen here arriving at Miami International Airport, the high-class hipster hit just the right note in Levi's
522 Jeans ($98) in Kayo and a simple black cardigan. Though it's obscured in the image above, she's also carrying a timeless L.L. Bean
Boat Tote ($24)—an excellent travel choice! Of course, Sevigny always turns up the volume on an otherwise casual look by incorporating an unexpected element. In this case, the mystery flair comes courtesy of a vintage Misfits concert t-shirt. Scout your local thrift stores for an exact match or swap in the
Debbie Harry Tee
($20) from 2K by Gingham Janette Beckman.
Charlize Theron
When we were considering potential candidates for this travel attire story, Charlize Theron immediately came to mind. The actress repeatedly wowed us with her airport panache: no small feat for a transatlantic flier! Seen here at LAX, Theron looked neat and comfortable in an oversized, tailored jacket, similar to Acqua's
Boyfriend Blazer
($108). Her dark blue scarf gives her outfit a little texture and wards off chill on an air-conditioned plane. (Try the
Tonal Check Scarf ($295) by Burberry, we love its stormy hues.) Finally, she opted for a delightful pair of Converse
Sequined Sneakers
($82), which give her otherwise low-key look a hint of sparkle.
Whitney Port
The City's Whitney Port is a WhoWhatWear.com reader favorite for her ability to translate trends into wonderfully wearable outfits and the way she looks fresh faced at all times—even in the airport. Recently, she was spotted in the baggage claim wearing an Opening Ceremony
Cropped Cable Crewneck Sweater ($200) and pair of Current/Elliott
Boyfriend Jeans ($224) in the Natural Denim Destroy wash, both wonderfully laidback selections. As much as we like these relaxed pieces, we were particularly intrigued by her footwear choice: Minnetonka's
Kilty Unbeaded Moccasins ($39). The super-soft suede flats easily slip on and off, so they're an ideal choice for long-distance flights.
Scarlett Johansson
As Scarlett Johansson demonstrated at the London airport, when it comes to on-trend travel ensembles, layers are key. The silver screen siren paired an American Apparel
Unisex Salt and Pepper Hoodie ($42) with a tan trench (DKNYC's
Trench Coat
($199) has a similar shape), for a cozy, comfortable look. She enlivened her neutral ensemble with a bright scarf—we're fans of Love Quotes'
Handknotted Fringe Scarf
($88) in sunny yellow—and added a bit of interest with a pair of
cropped booties, like Miz Mooz's
Felicity 80's Boot
($94).
Nicky Hilton
Spotted en route to Miami, Nicky Hilton showed that she isn't afraid to go for sporty comfort at the airport. In her Blue & Cream
Lampton's Hoodie ($150) and classic Nike
Dunk High Be True iD Shoes ($140), Hilton showcases the perfect alternative to the velour track suit—a traveling trend we wish we'd never see again! Her carry-on is a large monogrammed Goyard
St. Louis Tote, which is the perfect size for storing all the essentials you need on a coast-to-coast flight. —Liza Kaplan

Ashley - Anne's sunglasses are the limited edition Oliver Peoples x Kris Van Assche style, KVA. I think they are sold at all the Oliver Peoples Boutique.

None of these outfits really wow me but I think that's because they aren't supposed to. People dress comfortably for an airplane; not for fashion. Nothing stands out from any of these girls. Jeans and a t-shirt. Sweater and baggy cargos. A tracksuit. Consecutively though, a scarf wins. Boring post all together....

Yeah, Charlize's bag is Dior (Groucho Saddle bag, I think). I have never seen it in such a big version, must cost a fortune. I like her and Miranda best, but I'm really impressed with Rihanna, too, she usually looks so over the top. And how does Whitney always manage to look so fresh-faced and relaxed? Amazing.

wanted to point out that the titling in the stories the past couple days has been confusing. Who What Wear: Airports? or What They Wore: Airports?

I really love Chloe's look. The way the jeans are high waisted, but they don't look like she's wearing a corset. I also like Charlize's- the colours just go so well together, like a stormy sky. So chic.

Love Chloe's look! Notice the only one smiling at the camera and/or not trying to disguise herself is Whitney Port.

I like charlize's outfit the best. This is a great post, it is always so difficult to stay chic while travelling.
Posted by: Victoria C | 2009-03-30 08:14:33
I have to say, these ladies looked more charming and shining in NYC or LA street. as per the outfits in airport, maybe dressed for comfort and easy to move, it's more like our ordinary people's daily wear. of course, except they are more expensive. You could hardly recognize them in crowd. OMG, maybe that's the reason why they dressed this way. Anyway, love Miranda Kerr most among the lists. Finally, share the latest celeb style 21-27 march I just collected at: http://www.journeytofashion.com/read.php?24

Great post, ladies! A lot to be inspired by here, when thinking of travel days ahead. :)

i love whitney's outfit; she looks effortlessly chic as usual. But on a long-haul flight she would probably get cold! let's hope she has some socks on board! lol
Posted by: gillian | 2009-03-30 06:44:30
I have found that scarves are a MUST when travelling by air. If you are going from somewhere cold to somewhere hot, or vice versa, the scarf can easily be taken on or off. It also doubles as a soft pillow! Comfy socks are another thing that i always bring with me. I love to take my shoes off on the plane and my toes often get cold.
