What Was She Wearing: Answers/August 21st

The team of ladies featured in today's story combine to form a truly sensational edition of What Was She Wearing: Answers! Whether you favor the demure look of Emma Roberts or you would rather emulate Serena van der Woodsen's wild child taste, we are sure there is enough celebrity style here for everyone. Enjoy!

Emma Roberts
Unlike most seventeen-year-old girls, Emma Roberts possesses an elegant style that influences teenagers and adults alike. The sweet-faced actress recently piqued your curiosity when she left London's Radio One in Theory's Bram Tankicon ($55), Ksubi's Super Skinny Jeans ($226), and Frye's Veronica Slouch Boots ($328). Roberts' punched up these key basics by adding Current/Elliott's Lady Jacket ($270, available at eluxury.com in late October) and a See by Chloe Daytripper Shoulder Bagicon ($750) from the line's debut handbag collection. You can find this exact magenta leather tote at Neiman Marcus (212.840.1200), though if you want to save some dough, Matt & Nat's Kali Shoulder Bag ($240) has a similar color and shape.

Alexa Chung
Few ladies leave us as besotted with their attire as Alexa Chung. Our readers seem to agree, because the minute she steps out of her house, we get a stream of requests in our inboxes. Chung most recently inspired everyone while attending a screening for Leon in London earlier this month. She tucked a Marc by Marc Jacobs Off The Deep End Teeicon ($68) into H&M's High Waisted Shorts ($40, 310.855.1009), and stayed warm in Sonia by Sonia Rykiel's Striped Cardigan ($370, 212.229.9424). To cozy up for less, we recommend Vince's Ensign Cardigan ($320) or Forever 21's Wide Stripe Cardigan ($25). Chung completed her outfit in some fabulous vintage shoes, but John Fluevog's Darjeeling Heels ($173) are superb substitutes.

Katie Holmes
We will always remember the evenings we spent faithfully watching Dawson's Creek and the unfailing drama in Joey Potter's world. Sadly, fresh episodes are a thing of the past, but happily we've found an excellent substitute to watch instead: Katie Holmes' evolving style! WhoWhatWear.com readers are equally captivated by her taste in clothes and one outfit in particular recently caught your attention. Seen here strolling in Manhattan, Holmes wore a Scoopneck T-Shirt from The Row ($260, at Bergdorf Goodman in New York), J Brand's Cass Jeans ($275), and Juicy Couture's Sheered Cardigan ($148, 212.727.8029). As per usual, she complemented her look with some amazing add-ons: Chloe's Python Paraty Bag ($3800, exact bag at Neiman Marcus, 212.840.1200) and Lanvin's Metallic Ballet Flats ($550).

Blake Lively
The second season of Gossip Girl premiers in less than two weeks, so the wait is almost over! In the meantime, we (and you fellow fans) have been tracking pictures from set like giddy school girls. Just last week, Blake Lively was snapped while filming the show in Diane Von Furstenberg's Isletti Vest ($245), Rich & Skinny's Sleek Jeans ($167), and a high-style, low-price pair of Nine West's Iceblue Ankle Boots ($109). She carried Celine's Watch Me Work Bag ($2100) in taupe lambskin, which is available at the Celine Boutique in New York (212.486.9700) right now. The yummy tote is also currently in stock online in a gorgeous candy apple red patent leather. On a more affordable note, BCBCMaxAzria's Shelby Double Handle Satchelicon ($378) and Spiegel's Chain-Accented Hobo ($59) remind us of Lively's bag, but sell at a fraction of the price. Lively (or van der Woodsen, we should say) finished her look by matching the detachable chain on her bag with Gemma Redux's Sas Necklace ($424). We suggest DL by Dirty Librarian's Chains Rhinestone Knotted Necklace ($38) as an alternative.—Jessica Amento

my *fashion* blog > fashionchalet.blogspot.com < Loving Alexa's Sonia Rykiel cardigan and h&m shorts! :)

Posted by: Fashion Chalet |  2008-08-22 09:49:01

i have yet to meet a 'christy' that i like, obviously the poster here is no exception. alexa, absolutely divine, she can do no wrong! katie, love the outfit, but smile woman! small wonder the tabloids think your marriage is a misery. but love that the outfit is so 'fashion' and not so 'pretty pretty' anymore. the other 2 look fine, but not note-worthy. that's what i think anyways. x

I think that the clothes showcased here are a good example of how clothes can be stylish and still very wearable for the average Jane (except the H&M shorts, goddawful!). I would wear any of these while out shopping and I would feel both confident and comfortable.

Posted by: LuLuW-L |  2008-08-21 18:00:25

There's nothing interesting about any of their clothes or style.

Posted by: lianna |  2008-08-21 14:36:34

....B.O.R.I.N.G.... PEOPLE! Katie holmes will always have good quality clothes- she can afford them....however, she only started having any 'fashion following' after she married tom cruise....stylist or what?! i agree with beth- she never had any style, never will....her stylist might though!!

is it just me or does it look like alexa chung is slooowlllly dying. she needs a donut, stat!

Posted by: ylw |  2008-08-21 13:06:51

i admire katie holmes' style. she consistently picks flattering shapes that elongate her figure. i think she may be taking her ques from the likes of audrey hepburn and jackie kennedy. smart girl!

totally cute post, I want Alexa's shorts

Posted by: Gizmo |  2008-08-21 11:53:46

The rude comments that are left here always annoy me. Everyone acts as though in order to be stylish that you must wear groundbreaking pieces or in some way be paving an untread path. That is so untrue! The point here is that even when wearing basics, Katie Holmes (just one example) is wearing well made, good quality fitting pieces that flatter her figure. Her haircut is great and her sunglasses suit her well. That is just one form of style, of course among others.

Posted by: JC |  2008-08-21 10:38:27

Beth: Having style and being a style setter are two COMPLETELY different things. Not everyone can or should be a trend setter, I think being stylish, a la katie H is way more important. AND people are obviously asking about her, thats why they're posting her. I love love the marc shirt and Alexa's flats!

Posted by: fashionnowhere |  2008-08-21 10:24:41

I love Blake's boots and the way her jeans scrunch right into them. Everyone looks cute here, except Katie. I absolutely don't get her "style," and, I use that term lightly. One day she's dressed like a grandma, the next she's trying to pull off the latest trends. She's f ing weird.

Posted by: Llew |  2008-08-21 10:22:11

I've wanted that marc by marc jacobs "off the deep end" top since i saw it on the runway! I like Katie's look- it may seem "boring", but she chooses tops and pants that are consistently flattering on her figure. And she is a mom, after all- and i think she keeps that in mind and dresses appropriately. Emma looks really good.

Posted by: Stephanie |  2008-08-21 08:58:21

i LOVE The row t shirts. They are so soft, cut perfectly and look good on anyone. Mary-Kate and Ashley are great designers.

Posted by: lisa |  2008-08-21 08:51:46

i feel like blake lively looks like the clothes are wearing her...she's not wearing the clothes...does that make sense? all i'm saying is that, though i've never seen the show, ever time i see shots of outfits from GG everything looks too 'put on' and not natural (which is silly to say since, durr, it's a show, but i always thought carrie the character would wear what she wore regardless of real life trends, you know?)

Posted by: lg |  2008-08-21 08:35:48

Alexa looks same-y and those shorts are so weird. Katie looks quite good and I like Emma's jacket.

Posted by: Amy |  2008-08-21 08:29:21

I like how the bottom of Blake's jeans look with those boots. Is Alexa carrying a sleeping bag?

Posted by: MEP |  2008-08-21 07:57:18

katie holmes always looks boring....always looks the same. every pic i see of her going in and out of those rehearsels she is wearing the same old, same old boring clothes; jeans, a vest and a cardi....oh and she might jazz it up one day and wear a boring blue sweater over leggings. wow, what a style setter. she has good pieces. im sure they are lovely, but the girl has NO style, no individuality, and looks as boring as her character joey did. why does wwwd always put up photos of her?

Posted by: beth |  2008-08-21 06:28:52

I honestly don't get the obsession with Alexa Chung, but Emma and Blake look pretty good. In fact, Emma dresses very nicely compared to other actresses her age. Very UN-slutty if you ask me.

Posted by: Erock |  2008-08-21 05:45:33

Slut!? Oh. Ma. Gaaah. Are you like totally, like totally, like 14?? Totally. And monster? I thought it was a good thing to look tall. I'm not usually one to defend the rich and famous. And ehm, I'm not even sure who Emma Roberts is, but what's with the negativity? OK, so some of these super casual outfits aren't exactly adventurous, but they look insanely stylish.

Posted by: Agnes Oh Agnes |  2008-08-21 05:00:35

EMMA ROBERTS IS A SLUT BUT SHE LOOK AMAZIGN.

Posted by: Christy |  2008-08-21 01:42:56

boring boring boring. Alexa is a little interesting, but the rest are nothing special. And Katie Holmes' jeans are insane and make her look like a 7 foot tall monster.
