It's bathing suit season! Although this time of year inspires fear in the hearts and midriffs of many, help is here with today's
Top Five story. We feel your apprehension, so we scoured the swimwear aisles and found some stupendous suits that practically guarantee confidence for the wearer. Aside from being figure-flattering and fashionable, this crop of bikinis and maillots offer a wide range of styles that certainly improve upon the standard triangle-top, two-piece suit. You can channel a retro starlet in a high-waisted bikini, quench your neon craving with a hyper-colored print, or play it anything-but-safe in a super-sexy one piece.
Whatever you like, it's our hope that rather than letting bathing suits get the best of you, you'll use this opportunity to dip your toes into some of summer's biggest trends. Regardless of where you're sunning this season—by the sea or peacefully poolside—rather than simply flaunting some skin, why not show off your sartorial sensibilities too?
1. Silence & Noise Bow Bandeau ($48) and
Tidal Bikini Bottom ($48)
The fashionable flock's been tying one on lately—in a non-boozy way—as trendsetters repeatedly turn to bow-embellished pieces. After months of spotting this adornment on girly headbands, darling dresses, and statement shoes, it's a welcome surprise to see the trend's expand to include swimwear. Our favorite suit-able example is a bedecked bandeau top from Silence & Noise; when paired with a
South Pacific-style high-waisted bottom, the bow looks sophisticated rather than sweet. We could see
Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf pairing this suit with a signature headband and some Lily Pulitzer to create a haughty Hamptons look.
2. Marc by Marc Jacobs Ruffled Up Bandeau Top ($150) and
Ruffled Up Bottom ($94)
It's impossible to consider your tanning attire without planning your ensemble for that big Fourth of July bash (or Bastille Day fete for those who are lucky enough to summer in the S.O.F.). Fortunately, a Paris-dwelling American—the one and only Mr. Marc Jacobs— provided us with a flirty number filled with patriotic flair. Whether you opt for French or freedom fries, you'll set off style sparks to rival those fireworks clad in this white-hot number. Additionally, the blue and red stripes provide a certain pop, while ruffles offer extra coverage above and below.
3. Shimmi Sophia Lamé Bikini ($220)
Two LA-based ladies, Alison Renner and Scarlett Chorvat, couldn't find the perfect bikini, so they started their own collection of barely-there suits: Shimmi. Aware that a
polka-dot print is the perfect pairing for a teeny-weeny string bikini, the duo created the featured Sophia Lamé suit. The bold black-and-white dots are ideal for swimwear (spots have been a staple since the beginning of bikini-time) and have recently been the premiere pattern for designers like Henry Holland, Michael Kors, and Phillip Lim. We particularly love how Renner and Chorvat added a little shimmer to their version, so you can shine under the sun in style.
4. Zimmermann
Sunshine Kaleidoscope One Piece
($429, 212.354.9220)
Maybe it's because they're Australian and the sun is always a-shining down-under, but the designers at Zimmermann really know how to make standout swimwear with jet-set sensibilities. We love this one-piece that pays homage to the cut-out trend, but still offers coverage for those less comfortable with visible midriffs. And while we realize it's an investment piece to take to the beach, we prefer to think of it as a sunbathing statement with couture-inspiration, and thusly, well worth the price. However, if you'd prefer to ride the wave of the cut-out trend in a more wallet-friendly way, American Apparel offers two great alternatives: the
Maillot-V Swimsuit ($45) and the
Le Sport Chic Swimsuit ($42). Both versions are ideal for those fearless fashion lovers who aren't afraid to dive headfirst into this style.
5. Insight Jupiter Sphere Bikini ($82) in Sunny
At first glance, ruffles might seem girly. But Insight's frilled, strapless suit showcases a nouveau-bohemian-tribal spirit that spikes your "nice" with some "wild" (we'd recommend doing the same with your summertime beverage, if you're of legal drinking age, of course). And while we have let our love for ruffles run rampant through our
Top Five, the triple tier sans strap is more dance-party ready than the tamer (but still equally as poolside-posh) iteration offered up by Marc by Marc Jacobs. Additionally, we love how the bright and fun pattern on this party-girl bikini offers a taste of neon without dousing itself in said trend. All in all, we vote this suit as our number-one pick for soaking up the sun at the Soho House or lounging rooftop-cabana-style at ABH at the Thompson Beverly Hills.—Liza Kaplan
I love #4 and how it hugs the bod... it will look gr8 on my body since i have SEXY baby fat here and there to enhance the look =D

I agree with all of you who say that this model is way too skinny. I can't figure out why they chose this girl, knowing that so many other girls and women will look at her and compare themselves with her. This just p*sses me off- shame on you WWW.

regarding the swimsuits: the zimmerman one is AMAZING. what a beautiful, beautiful structured design. i work in a swimsuit store, and we carry many designs similar to these -- and let me tell you, women of ALL sizes can fit into these designs. it's a matter of taste, confidence & trial. if you like it, just try it on. swimsuits are much more versatile than you would think. regarding the comments here: i'm seriously quite disgusted by all the hatred directed at this model. i understand that some skinny people are like that because they might be sick or dieting, etc, but some women are naturally skinny. VERY skinny. just like how some women are naturally VERY curvy. while i have to agree kim's comment was childish and mean ("go to the gym fatties"? seriously, how old are you?), the rest of you are absolutely no better and are pure hypocrites for calling HER mean-spirited. the comments here are incredibly nasty and shallow. that because of this model's figure, she's "less of a woman"?! and all these aggresively derogatory comments about her being flat-chested and that her hip bones are jutting out -- it's disgusting. i'm a naturally VERY skinny girl, but i'm perfectly healthy. i've never been told to take pills to retain calories as i seem to be able to do that fine on my own. i'm fine, normal, healthy and just as much of a woman as any of you out there. and indeed, so is this model. take a good honest look at yourselves, ladies, and learn.

These bathing suits are so cute! Wish I would have gotten one after my vacation! I love monokinis too! Check out the ones on my site http://beautyandthebudget.onsugar.com

i am 5'11" 125 lbs. and a varsity college athlete and i look like an absolute fat ass in comparison to this girl. i'm gonna guess this girl weighs no more than 110 lbs and for someone of model height this is dangerous and even if it is "natural" ppl that are that skinny naturally are recommended to take pills to help them retain calories as I had to do. this bathing suits aren't all bad, but unrealistic in the way they fit, especially the last one

liz says "(...)then don't read and comment on the post". I find this a funny way of thinking: when you see something that provokes you, you should NOT speak your mind? because I looked at the bikinis while thinking "my GOD, that was a REALLY skinny model!" - isn't it good that WWWD knows that this was my reaction? obviously, I wasn't the only one.

First of all, I own swimsuit number 5, the ruffled one by Insight. I'm in my early 20's, and am a small D/large C cup. The ruffled bandeau top is surprisingly supportive and flattering. Everywhere I go people freak out and ask me where I got it. At the beach, by the pool, or on the boat it looks flirty yet current. I do have a problem with the model's size, mainly because she is too small to show the real fit of the bikinis. The Insight bottoms are in reality quite small, like most Australian bikini cuts. She is so tiny she makes them look baggy and like they ride higher than they do. She might be a great size for runway work, but for bikini modeling she does not do these suits justice, making them look severely unflattering, not at all sexy. Also to the comments that they are for girls in their preteens, its surprising how the right sunglasses (aviators are key) and a woman's body transform their looks.

The model IS skinny but, surprise, she looks good, and doesn't look sick. If you don't like WWWD's model choices, then don't read and comment on the post. Any time there is someone (and this goes for any kind of magazine and commenting opportunity, everyone ALWAYS comments on how skinny the model is. STOP IT ALREADY! And stop being jealous! They may have eating disorders yes, but but I know am I am right when I say that your comments are not coming from a warm heart with the general public's interesting in mind, they are coming from jealousy.

I might be wrong, but isn't the purpose of WWW to look at the construction of the clothing. Sure, one could argue the lack of variety but the main point is the design. The size of the model is arbitrary. It just so happens that for the design chosen, a lithe model is more suitable. Similarly, if they had chosen a halter, the model would be more curvaceous. If the only comment one has is on the model's need 'to eat something,' then perhaps a site dedicated to body image is more appropriate.
Posted by: | 2009-06-09 00:42:35
To kim: very few women are naturally this thin, all the others have to follow an ultra strict diet and work out like crazy to achieve this look. If you think that's a good way to spend your life, that's up to you. Don't tell everyone else how to spend theirs.

I always defend the whowhatwear girls when they choose skinny models for their stories but this is too much. The girl is bony head to toe and that in a post where it's not so much about clothes (which often hang better on skinny people) but about the lack of clothes...Next time could you find someone who looks at least a little bit like a woman?
Posted by: Caitlin | 2009-06-08 21:29:36
Regardless of the size of the majority of WWWD's readers; the model definitely looks emaciated. I am not a "fatty" and am someone who also happens to be flat-chested and a size 2 and I also take offense to the use of such a sickly looking model. Yea, my hip bones might stick out and my thighs don't touch, but its not right or beneficial to advertise this type of figure to readers, especially when attempting to market bathing suits. It is offensive to most and only furthers our cultures obsession with being extremely thin. And to Kim, no one cares what you own or that you work out...being hateful never looked good on anyone.
Posted by: Brie | 2009-06-08 19:20:31
i don't mind that the model is skinny but she is flatter than paper. if bustier girls wear those ruffles, they'd look quite ridiculous. polka dots wouldn't be very flattering either. those bathing suits are no doubt cute but i'm afraid they're for tweens.
Posted by: va | 2009-06-08 19:12:04
wow. girls like kim make me sick. these swimsuits aren't exactly "figure flattering" to say the least.
Posted by: alice | 2009-06-08 17:29:09
ya i happen to be thin (i work out, SHOCKER, I KNOW), and i own the mj swimsuit, its very cute on me. Judging by these anti-thin-woman comments I'm guessing most of WWWD readers are the same kind of women who get mad at the fashion industries for catering to thinner women. Hit the gym, fatties. Good job WWWD girls.

Gotta agree with some of the commenters. Would have LOVED to have seen a curvier girl as the swimming costume model.

ugh, i hate ALL of these!
Posted by: ayana | 2009-06-08 15:53:19
I agree with all comments about the model's physique... but what's really astounding me is the codpiece on number 4. Yeesh.
Posted by: MEP | 2009-06-08 15:51:52
ew. not only are these swimsuits ugly, but that girl needs to eat something. really disappointing post.
Posted by: isabel | 2009-06-08 15:27:52
same senitments here. only this girl pulls off these suits b/c of how thin and flat chested she is. ugh she is not athletic as one poster tried to proclaim. SO NOT ATHLETIC.

I love number 1,2,4,5 ..actually i love me all www.stylephilosophy.blogspot.com

This post is only for stick thin girls with NO boobs! I know that my breasts would neither fit nor look good in those outfits. Please stop alienating 99% of your readers. That model's body type is rare and a range of suits for various bodies would serve more people.
Posted by: Twe | 2009-06-08 13:09:06
This post is ridiculous. These suits would only look good on 2% of the popular. I have big boobs (I'm a D cup) and I'm 100% sure that my breasts would neither fit nor look good in those suits.

I love #3 too!!! Especially the style of the top. Tori Praver Swimwear is my favorite for this summer though!! I love the "Leilani" bikini top. Madison carries her line... www.madisonlosangeles.com

i wish you had just posted 'must have bathing suits for the summer' not top 5. i dont really like any of these all that much. ive seen so much ruffle in bathing suits while shopping and ive tried staying away from that. i mean i am the definition of flat chested but i just think it makes me look like a little girl. i like colors on my bathing suit and these lack it. although i do love that marc suit, even though its ruffled. maybe im being bias though.
Posted by: Ami | 2009-06-08 11:47:32
uh, I've got a flat chest, and I wouldn't be caught dead in those ruffles. maybe if I was six years old? love numbers 1 and 6, though.
Posted by: d | 2009-06-08 10:18:44
Love number 3!
Posted by: Amy | 2009-06-08 10:06:41
Wait... what?! I don't think the model is scary skinny at all! In fact, I think she looks a tad athletic and not in an emaciated way for that manner. Shows what kind of people read this site, eh? Are there really beaches in Kansas?

While ruffles are absolutely adorable (everyone beat me to saying this), they do not look good on busty women, AHEM. LLEW - Good point.
Posted by: D | 2009-06-08 09:18:32
Wow - sucked up models and $450 swimsuits - I guess I'm not part of your demographic, WWWD, as I live in the real world.
Posted by: Llew | 2009-06-08 09:11:53
@ Kara I was going to say the same thing. These swimsuits are for flat-chested ladies!
Posted by: Katie | 2009-06-08 08:39:43
All these swimsuits are for girls with flat chests! is that all of your readers, its certainly not me!

Cosigned.maybe it's just the model, but I really can't envision those bikinis (espec the tops) working on anyone upwards of a size 2...Certainly not on bustier ladies!=( Regardless,I'm lusting for that Zimmerman suit xx

"...that practically guarantee confidence for the wearer." I suppose that's true when your hip bones are jutting out like that model. No kudos for promoting unhealthy body image WWD
