Time Out: Leggings
When we were little, our exuberant behavior periodically got us sent to our progressive schools' "calm corner," where we reflected upon our social sins and took a breather from circulating on the playground. A mere fifteen minutes later (eons in grade school time) we'd return to our activities knowing a little bit more then we did before. Namely: you're annoying if you're everywhere, all the time. In this spirit we've created Time Out, a section for fashion choices that we wish would get benched for a few. Leggings? You're up first.
In La-La Land, leggings have been terrorizing the streets. They appear on 3rd Street eating cupcakes at Toast, they swill drinks under too short tunics at Stone Rose, they shop for ankle boots at Barney's, and we're just not that into them anymore. Rachel Bilson used to wear leggings (in February), but she's traded them in for opaque tights—and so should you. The more opaque, the better, because seeing knees is just a no-no as far as we're concerned. This fall pick up a pair in any dark color you like, from matte black to the season's jewel tones. One of the great things about tights is that there are no rules when it comes to matching. You can go monochromatic (navy tights under a navy dress) or for high-contrast (black tights under a white dress a la Chloe or DVF). We've sourced them at www.mytights.com, but remember, the key word is opaque.
As for those leggings you were oh-so recently oh-so wild about? Don't be sad, we're sure they'll come back--they already did once—just not for a few years, hopefully.

I think they are fine as long as they look full legnth (wearing them under boots and such). what? Is it ok if my niece who is 13, to still wear them? I agree. Leggings are getting a little bit old and tacky. yes, finally the over abused leggings trend is over, tights are so much nicer :D NO! NO! NO! I adore my leggings- I have about 5 pairs! i was wearing tights AGES ago but i still like leggings... i like tights with patterns on them or in colors... i want to get a pair that a white in one leg and black in the other leggings to me is for the under 25 crowd, tights, now that is safe for everyone NO no no...i love my leggings!...though they are only for playtime(running errands/ walking the dog/ cooking at home)usage, and always show themselves under those ridiculously short american apparel polo dresses. Opaque tights are great too, though i'm afraid a week into winter weather and i've already abused the trend by wearing tights 3 days this week...i need to have some fun at work! these things can stay in the crypt for a long while as far as I'm concerned. CORRECT!!!!!! |
