What They Wore: Glastonbury 2008

True style icons never miss an opportunity to show off fresh fashion—even while trekking through mucky fields—instead they embrace any occasion to parade great threads. As such, we were expecting a profusion of admirable style at last weekend’s Glastonbury Festival and the attendees (celebrity and otherwise) didn’t disappoint us with their spirited and spot-on outfits. While we're personally a bit depressed that we didn’t get to watch Kings of Leon, Jay-Z, and The Teenagers play to the damp crowds, we do take some sort of odd comfort in the knowledge that all of our favorite British muses were in attendance and in high style.

Glastonbury offers a climate counterpoint to Coachella’s notorious heat, meaning some sort of rainfall traditionally beleaguers the festival, so most people opt for a uniform of dark-hued clothes and Hunter Wellies ($145). Fortunately, the similarities ended there, as our spotlighted attendees distinguished themselves with unique accessories, like an orange headscarf for Pixie Geldof or a daisy-detailed headband for Lily Cole. The flame-haired model also put a spin on her look by turning her Katharine Hamnett Slogan Shirt ($80) inside out and adding a maroon armband.

The ultimate fashion individualist—Kate Moss—shined in both a metaphorical and literal sense. Dressed in a shimmery silver top and a slim cropped pair of Siwy’s Hannah Jeans ($206) in Rain, Moss looked effortlessly rock n' roll and reinforced our opinion that she can wear no wrong. Other outfits we enjoyed include Geldof's lightweight cardigan/body-conscious short dress combo and Daisy Lowe's retro Jawstee paired with skin-tight shiny leggings. Lowe's style is easy to emulate, just grab a pair of Kova & T's Oxy Leggings ($129) and a Denim Washed Jaws t-shirt ($20).

Saving the best for last, we shall turn our attention to Alexa Chung—one of the best-dressed ladies at the festival. Chung nailed the playful-meets-edgy backstage look with her simple, but effective, outfit. She tucked Gap’s striped Shoulder-Placket Sweater ($38) into a pair of vintage jean shorts and threw on a punky Belstaff jacket as outerwear. In sync with her pal Geldof's choice of over-the-knee black stockings, Chung opted for a similarly wooly pair and completed her outfit with a long strap saddlebag and Lacoste hat. We hope these looks will inspire you when dressing for Chicago's Lollapalooza, New Jersey's All Points West, or whichever music festival destination awaits you! —Jessica Amento

I love these photos. Everyone just looks so cool. Face it people it's a festival not a fashion show.

Posted by: kris |  2008-08-04 17:38:36

The festival fans do look pretty horrid.

Posted by: D. |  2008-07-29 17:34:03

Kate's outfit looks the same as the one(s) she wore last year, Pixie Geldof is trying a little too hard to pull off that hippie-grunge thing and the Belstaff jacket looks like pleather from afar, amazing. I like what Daisy Lowe is wearing and Lily Cole's outfit minus the random armband. It would have been cool to see some of the 'normal' people's style, the ones featured look kinda frumpy, but that's already been established I guess.

fashiongirl you are a complete ass. why would you say that? go bury yourself in your own nastiness.

Posted by: sarah |  2008-07-10 21:13:02

american apparel's ware out really quickly. i would get the kova and t ones! my american apparel ones look nothing like that they are more matte. not shiny at all. anyway kate looks great as always! check out my blog!

Posted by: kitty |  2008-07-09 22:22:51

Honestly, if you didn't want to spend $129 on leggings for Daisy's look, American Apparel has the exact same thing for only $42.

i like the wellies! so practical and cute (in this situation). like kates shirt, too. I really want the wellies in a cool color, like purple or midnight blue!

Posted by: becca |  2008-07-09 10:36:09

ew fans are wearing terrible outfits! why are they featured. spotted halter is hideous as is tutu! pixie and daisy looking good as per usual

Posted by: foxcee |  2008-07-09 04:31:04

Agree with C -- I wouldn't go within a foot of a festival in the UK wearing anything but wellies. Still, some of the outfits featured here are a bit... suspect. Not really quite sure what Kate Moss is attempting. I like Pixie Geldorf's outfit best.

Posted by: Dell |  2008-07-09 01:46:43

To everybody who commented about the rain boots: It probably wouldn't have been the smartest idea to wear heels or flats. Though I suppose maybe Chucks could have worked, these boots seem like the most obvious choice...

i think pixie looks the best. I LOVE GLASTONBURY! goldfrapp was amazing (!)

UGH! fans style is TERRIBLE! never something i would expect to see on WWWD! im sure there were better dressed people than this! who wears polka dots (or halters for that matter!) these days. come on WWWD! GAG! excellent style from daisy lowe as per usual though.

Posted by: afox |  2008-07-08 18:58:36

i dont know how i feel about wellies yet, i dont really feel the shininess of the boot and everytime i see one, i think of bad weather. so....still unsure, but daisy lowe and pixie look interesting in a good way.

Posted by: kashmere |  2008-07-08 18:48:13

i love that cardigan pixie is wearing... where's it from??

Posted by: etienne |  2008-07-08 18:20:29

I think rainboots are disgusting; to look at and to wear.

Posted by: Laurie |  2008-07-08 17:44:53

pixie and alexa, so cute. the rest, not so much.

Posted by: sarah |  2008-07-08 17:24:50

i love pixie. more posts on her are appreciated as for the "fans" seriously? why would you bother wasting your time on posting about outfits like that?

Posted by: zizi farah |  2008-07-08 16:15:27

I love Kate Moss' look: it is both fashionable and looks rather comfy. I hate when people think the only way to be comfy is to look ugly (i.e. crocs). I think the prefect outfit is both comfy and makes you look stunning. Check out my blog: http://www.vogueidea.wordpress.com xoxo - A Vogue Idea

Anyone who has ever participated in a festival knows how hard it is to be comfortable and cute! Wellies are awesome. They make me want to herd sheep on the English countryside and pretend I'm some fair maiden, ha! I do agree with some of the posts here that Ms. Chung looks like she put her shorts on lying down with a pair of pliers. But you gotta love any street style feature, always inspiring!

Posted by: brie |  2008-07-08 15:45:22

Wow, I never thought wellies could look so cute.

Posted by: Amy Jean |  2008-07-08 14:40:12

Pixie's outfit is stunning =]

Posted by: Jennyfer |  2008-07-08 14:38:07

Pixie looks brilliant! She pulls off the sunglasses quite well. Daisy is my second favourite - I like the t-shirt. Alexa shouldn't wear those shorts x_x Lily looks alright but Kate looks terrible!

Posted by: Amy |  2008-07-08 13:43:01

I think Daisy looks best, her outfit is the most practical for the weather and still cute at the same time. I love wellies, I have two pairs. One Chanel pair and one pair of Hunters in the midnight sparkle shade that I love because they are sort of inbetween black and navy and have shimmer/glitter.

Kate Moss looks good, and I don't like her style at all. Pixie, Daisy, and Lily look cute as well. The fans-boiling, hot messes. Just plain ugly.

Posted by: mochababe73 |  2008-07-08 12:16:03

love the wellies.

Posted by: lovemaegan.com |  2008-07-08 11:25:59

pixie looks great. daisy and lily, too! what happened to kate moss?

Posted by: athea |  2008-07-08 10:52:24

I hate hearing the word 'ugly' so much! I love Pixie's look (sans sunglasses).

Posted by: C |  2008-07-08 10:41:13

I personally think Alexa looks amazing and totally the best. Check her hat in hand too! I agree the fans look kinda 'eh', but I guess it's real life. They are showing what real teeny-boppers are wearing as they attempt to emulate celebrity style. Just my two cents. ♥

Posted by: L.A. |  2008-07-08 10:03:44

that geldof girl is so ugly!

Posted by: fashiongirl |  2008-07-08 09:53:54

Simply hearing the term, Glastonbury, sends shivers of delight up and down my spine. Hands down 2005 is still my favorite. But I love the glitz of metallics, leather and grey denim this year. (*my daily, diary blog*) fashionchalet.blogspot.com

the wellies look good in all the pics, but i would never wear them myself (unless i were going to glastonbury, that is)... its just a look thats very specific but its rather useless/unattractive in most everyday situations.

Posted by: caroline |  2008-07-08 08:35:27

For once Miss Moss looks the worst! Of the celebs, that is. Nice hoodie on the fan and WTF is her partner in fashion crime trying to get away with??

Posted by: MEP |  2008-07-08 08:05:07

Pixie Geldof looks great as usual. I really like Lily Cole and Daisy Lowe's outfits simple yet chic and I agree Alexa's shorts look way too tight.

Posted by: Camilla |  2008-07-08 05:28:22

I like Pixie best. I actually did a post just like this a couple days ago: http://www.runawaygallery.com/2008/07/glastonbury-fashion-2008.html

Posted by: Runaway Gallery |  2008-07-08 05:02:23

I love festival style! I even featured it in a recent post about Glastonbury :) lolitasunglasses.blogspot.com

Posted by: lolitasunglasse |  2008-07-08 04:43:33

cant dress up wellies? I think Lily Cole does that perfectly, she looks hot.

Posted by: Charlotte |  2008-07-08 03:52:30

I only think Pixie looks good, love her socks...her outfit just works. The other girls are just so-so...and I think that Alexa's shorts are to tight, making her look wide, which is unfortunate because she has a nice long, lean body

Posted by: S |  2008-07-08 01:10:36

yeah!pixies outfit is the best. those festival fans are super ugly!

Posted by: sh |  2008-07-08 01:08:31

Whatever.....kinda hard to dress up rubber boots.

Posted by: J |  2008-07-08 00:55:57

what kind of sunglasses is pixie wearing in that first pic?

Posted by: rawr |  2008-07-08 00:53:38

i only like lily's hair and pixie's outfit from neck to knees...
