What They Wore: Coachella

Mixing work and play is always a pleasure for the WhoWhatWear.com team, and happily, we were able to indulge in our cherished pastime this past weekend. Early Friday morning, we ventured outside our Beverly Hills-bubble and headed 130 miles east to the tenth annual Coachella Music Festival. Obviously, we were thrilled to immerse ourselves in the sounds (chiefly Ghostland Observatory, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Morrissey) and contemplate the trippy light installations, but our main objective was to track the festival's fashion!

With sunscreen slathered on our faces and gladiator sandals strapped on our feet, we spent three days examining thousands of music enthusiasts and separating the true tastemakers from the run-of-the-mill hipsters. As we're always interested in street style, we asked our favorite fashion-forward attendees to answer a little questionnaire. Our specific queries were simple, we just wanted to know three key things: WHO they were, WHAT shows they were excited about seeing, and most importantly, what they decided to WEAR to the festival.

Overall, we were quite impressed with the majority of this year's Coachella ensembles. Aside from a few impractically avant-garde approaches (think: Native American headdresses and knee-high, hot pink fur boots), there were so many darling looks on display. We spied loads of vintage floral rompers, pale blue pairs of jean cutoffs, and zingy-hued sandals, alongside several other excellent wardrobe pieces, which are showcased in today's lineup. We hope that you'll enjoy the final compilation of outfits and let them serve as inspiration for the rest of your summer concert-going season! —Jessica Amento, additional reporting by Kelly Agnew

i'm so happy to see you had this edtion of WWW, I was at Coachella and I couldn't get over how many well dressed people were there. living in chicago where they are far and between.

        Posted by: chelsea  |  2009-04-24 10:17:31

Um...were these the worst dressed. You can tell they where all trying to go in a certain direction but none of them nailed it. I thought I would be impressed by them. I think you missed out on the girls who knew exactly what image they were trying to express and not copy...

Though finishing for several days, Coachella still overwhelm the fashion media. Just updated these chic girls at chochella and piled them up. vintage, fab shorts, bold bright colors... as a sequel: http://www.journeytofashion.com/read.php?57

Am I the only one who thinks they look bad? It's like the beginning of a episode of What Not to Wear. The clothes are ill fitting, out dated, with faded generic prints. I don't get it.

wish very much i was there looking at these. oh the music! x egotrippingatthegates.blogspot.com

i love elizabeth's look!

        Posted by: lianna  |  2009-04-22 21:23:15

style.com's coachella's were far more interesting. as lovely as i am sure all these girls are, this post is REALLY uninspiring. where i come from girls on the street dress like this all the time, so it's a tad '?' to see in a post .

        Posted by: s  |  2009-04-22 20:22:38

This is definately one of your better posts in a while. I love it, you picked up on some major trends for summer: floral, one pieces, rompers, denim cut off shorts. Basically a throwback to the 1990's. Seriously, watch an old episode of 90210 or even the movie Clueless, you'd be surprised!

        Posted by: r  |  2009-04-22 12:54:13

There's no way I'd even risk ruining nice, expensive clothes at a music festival. How can you enjoy it if you're worrying about not losing your shoes or have to keep tabs on your expensive bag? For me it's fanny packs all the way for these kind of things!

mehh, these are just okay.. Sarah would look classy without that ridiculous bag and those hideous shoes, Morgan, Taylor, and Sophia I like, the rest look like a jumble of ethnic fabrics. though olivia's adorable. designer and vintage clothes @ http://www.stylishabandon.blogspot.com

        Posted by: ar  |  2009-04-22 00:24:12

*sarah is ok*

        Posted by: KiKi  |  2009-04-21 23:39:42

this post sucks, why did u choose all boho, hippie, thriftstore looks? wasnt there any fierce, cool, biker chic, minimalistic or anyth thats even a little avant garde looks to choose from? this looks like last years Lolla/coachella threw up, LAME! they all fail, but sarah is not ok, minus the sandals.

        Posted by: KiKi  |  2009-04-21 23:35:42

oh mannnn olivias only 14? shes only going to get better. and she looks like natalie portman!!! sophia and morgan are amazing as well.. thumbs down to taylor. walking cliche of trends i think

sophia rocks but of course she's australian

OOO I want to attend Coachella one day. http://cremedecouture.blogspot.com/ follow me: i'm just starting out.

        Posted by: Alexis  |  2009-04-21 16:35:46

Wow, so many Dr. Martens on show...I like Sophia's outfit, but what I like most are her pale sunglasses and light blonde hair, goes together so well, and I usually don't care for a tan, but it's perfect with her look. I also love Olivia's outfit, it's really simple, but chic and so natural, for lack of a better word. Also love her floppy little hat, whereas I can't stand Elizabeth's outfit, she reminds me of J.Lo...or Lauren Conrad.

love the floral jumpsuits and fringe vest. i have the cutest romper at http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=7052234&page=1§ion_id=&order=

        Posted by: valesca  |  2009-04-21 13:53:26

Most of these looks are completely contrived but over all Sophie looks the best.

        Posted by: Elizabeth  |  2009-04-21 11:54:21

yayyy Elizabeth, Amanda, and Sophia. SO cute and very inspirational.

        Posted by: Lovesgemma  |  2009-04-21 11:41:07

I am sooo glad you're covering this!! :) Since I can't be there inperson, at least now I can see the Fashion while listening to those exact same bands on my iTunes/iPod! ;) xo - fashionchalet.blogspot.com

I like Sarah, Elizabeth, and Amandas' outfits, Amanda could have overloaded on tribal jewelry and a different sandal and made a Major upgrade but cute for the event, I see where Sophie was going but really trying to hard, on the shorts and boots, like it was important to be seen in them no matter how frumpy it looks, as a friend I won't of let her leave the house without telling her to change them, but all and all not bad...always nice to see personal style every-wear, HA HA Luv ya WWW! I know u guys were looking AMAZING, that is what counts!

        Posted by: The Illustrious  |  2009-04-21 11:04:17

Is that Amanda Gilbert?

        Posted by: Sarah  |  2009-04-21 10:34:58

I like Elizabeth and Sarah's outfits. As for the rest... I know everyone on here is gonna hate me but I don't understand why people would pay lots of money for clothes that look like they were purchased at a flea market. It makes no sense to me. If you have great style then find great pieces that look luxe. You don't necessarily have to spend a lot of money to look like a million bucks. But why spend a lot of money to look cheap?

        Posted by: Sarah  |  2009-04-21 10:12:15

they all look the same..90's leftovers :) and the average age..20 years old..what if we're running for the thirties and we still dress like teenagers?? p.s. sorry for any error, i'm Italian :)

        Posted by: giulia  |  2009-04-21 09:56:54

i think taylor and morgans looks are both very 90s, but ilove it. i think i like morgans the best. she pulls that whole look off very well. WHAT HAPPENED TO WWWD TV?!

What a surprise there is also coachella style here haha~ Taylor's outfit is my favorite which combines cool and cutie. Also I collected some fashion icons on coachella's street, but not that deatailed like this. just enjoy. http://www.journeytofashion.com/read.php?55

        Posted by: Leann  |  2009-04-21 08:59:57

This is always my favorite post of the year. For some reason, cute summer fashion always eludes me. Probably bc I stay 3 shades of white all year. These ladies look chic and comfy. Always inspiring.

i love Elizabeth's outfit that looks like my typical summertime outfit xoxo beautyandthestreet.blogspot.com
