What They Wear: Stylish Mothers

As an office full of daughters, we get a touch tenderhearted when we come across photos of our favorite trendsetters with their wee little girls in tow. There's something so cute about these yummy mummies and their mini-me kids, we simply had to share a few with you today. Consider it an ode to our own marvelous mothers—Carole, Kit, Mieko, Ruth, Rosario, Lynne, and Wendy.

No matter if you are sans children or have a whole brood, this stylish sextet offers outfit-inspiration for all. Whether you like Nicole Richie's classic denim jacket (a perfect pick) or momma Moss' oversized earrings (she started the trend!), today's story is full of highly wearable pieces that will easily fit into anyone's wardrobe. Of course, if clothes and accessories aren't your cup of tea, we can recommend a fashionable and fantastic alternative: Cynthia Rowley's Bicycle Built for Three ($1200, 212.242.3803). It looks much like the designer's Gossip Girl-featured cruiser, but Rowley designed this one with families in mind, complete with a baby seat. It's fancy, for sure, but it's also the only Mother's Day-oriented item we love!

Heidi Klum
In our pre-WWW days, we once interviewed Heidi Klum for a story and were struck by how down-to-earth and lovely she is in person. Klum's just as authentically casual in her off-duty clothing choices, as she demonstrated during a stroll through Soho last month with Leni, her darling chip-off-the-block daughter, by her side. The Project Runway star was spotted in Citizens of Humanity's Riley Boyfriend Selvage Jeans ($238), paired with a gorgeous Thomas Wylde Psycho Mozambique Overcoat ($2900) from the A/W 2008 collection, Supra Muska Skytop Sneakers ($120), and a festive Party Tiger Sweater ($82) by Something. While Klum kept things relatively sober (save for the zesty sweater), Leni preferred to be pretty in a pink via a Juicy Couture Kids' Trimmed Puffer Coat ($258), rugby-stripe dress, and tights—all in her favorite color.

Nicole Richie
There are loads of lovely moms in Hollywood, but few are as perfectly put together as Nicole Richie. Between her high-impact, low fuss bangs and easy-chic outfits, Richie's mastered the mommy mix. Of course, her gorgeous little girl is always turned out too; just check out Harlow's daring purple-and-red combo! The fashionable pair showed off their style sensibilities in West Hollywood last month, with Momma Richie in Paige Premium Denim's Vermont Denim Jacket ($198), an Urban Outfitters dress, Wolford tights, and Imitation of Christ booties and Harlow in See Kai Run's Monica Shoes ($32).

Kate Moss
Could you imagine growing up with the glamorous Kate Moss as your mom? Maybe we're unrealistic, we think we could bear being told to eat our peas and pick up our rooms if these dictates were coming from the always artfully attired Ms. Moss. Especially if it meant that we'd have access to the Chanel dress, Zana velvet shawl, YSL sandals, and silver chandelier earrings that she wore to Leah Wood's wedding! (Lila Grace played dress-up in a vintage fur shrug that day.) While most of us don't have the bank account or body to buy and wear Moss' outfit, her earrings can be approximated with ease. Try ASOS' Ethnic Coin Hoop Earrings ($16), which are available in silver or gold, to get a similar statement style.

Michelle Williams
No disrespect meant, but we have vague memories of what our moms wore when we were little ones, and somehow we doubt they managed to pull off "understated cool" quite like Michelle Williams. The eighties were interesting in their own right, surely, but we don't remember seeing anything that was the equivalent of Balmain's Heart Tank ($777) or No. 6's Black Leather Buckle Boots ($340) in their closets! The actress showed off this enviable ensemble on a walk in Brooklyn with Matilda, who looked equally cute in a Lucy Sykes dress from the Spring 08 collection. If you'd like to emulate Williams' top, but are looking for something less pricey, try Rika's Elisa Blouse ($210) with a crisp pair of dark denim shorts and your favorite ankle booties.

Claudia Schiffer
Of all the darling daughters in today's story, we envy Claudia Schiffer's kiddo the most. As we learned in the recent British Vogue, an unimaginable clothing collection awaits Clementine, as her mother has a 30,000 square foot, climate-controlled warehouse full of stuff she picked up at shoots and shows over the past twenty-odd years. While we wonder about what that amazing treasure trove holds, at least we can enjoy the wonderful outfits Schiffer wears to drop off her tot at school. We love her retro preppy outfit, from her deep blue bell-bottom jeans to her natty vintage scarf. J Brand's The Doll Jeans ($187) in Indigo have the same look and feel as Schiffer's style, just add a neatly tied navy scarf around your neck (raid your mom's closet for thrifty alternatives).

Jessica Alba
The final photo in today's story gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "mom jeans" and shifts the implication from heinous to hot! Jessica Alba showed off her fine post-preggers form in Beverly Hills recently when she wore Genetic Denim's Shane Skinny Jean ($198) in Zinc to the park. Paired with breadandbutter's Cap Sleeve Boat Neck Top ($115) and Havaianas' Slim Flip Flop ($24) in Silver Moon and a green Salvatore Ferragamo Bag ($2750, 212.754.5258), Alba's look is casually cute. We appreciate how she dressed daughter Honor is similarly striped fare: her pink onesie is equally sweet.

Jessica Alba should definitely be on the list! I think she looks great, I think her outfit is one of the best on this list and her baby is so cute! She should wear the "I Make Good Babies" t-shirt by Emperors New Clothes

jessica + michelle are the cutest mothers

I know Kate Moss is fine with fur, but it seems over the top to have a child wearing it. Kids get dirty & run a muk, I want to see children in children's clothing! Give her a cute peacoat or something! And I agree that Katie Holmes does belong on there & that picture of Heidi Klum isn't so flattering. I personally don't see her as a fashion icon, I see her as a model icon.

all cute..and not particularly MORE stylish than a lot of regular moms out there..

Kate's little girl wearing fur? It's ridiculous. What is she trying to teach her kid? I guess two years from now we'll see both of them getting a smoke together, as some sort of mommy-daughter quality time.

Seriously, you couldn't put some nonblondes in there?? I think Salma Hayek or Solange Knowles have great style!

The whole oversize trend this season is perfect for stylish moms! I just bought a bohemian style dresses from www.upcboutique.com and my sister who just had a baby has already hoarded it from me. After seeing this post i'm thinking i need to get myself another!

i agree with g says. lila's little pouty face and questionable fur make me veto the obvious fashionable mommy. i think the only acceptable stylish mommy looks are on michelle and claudia, different ages and styles appropriate for that reason. nicole, jessica and heidi? please. so LA. i would've liked a better dig for someone european. karen elson maybe?

        Posted by: lauren  |  2009-05-09 13:07:10

It should be Katie Holmes + Suri instead of Nicole... Richie is looking too boring , cheap and try hard...Awful tye dye baby bag...!

        Posted by: Cris  |  2009-05-09 09:31:17

Claudia has the best style, naturally chic. Nicole has the worst, cheap hippie!

        Posted by: Cris  |  2009-05-09 09:28:51

I find Lila (Kate Moss's little one) wearing fur rather disturbing...If it is faux fur then I suppose "playing dress up" is ok..But if an animal has been harmed to make that shrug then Lila should know exactly what she is wearing and what poor little furry animal was killed..How would she like it if her little puppy was killed for fashion????

I think Gwen isn't posted because they focused on mother/daughter combos

        Posted by: lucy  |  2009-05-08 21:11:53

that pic of kate m is so old....i don't think this post has enjoyed much in the way of research. i agree gwen s should be on here. i don't personally think heidi dresses well without a stylist, and there are some way cooler moms with older kids, like yasmin le bon, i mean she is SO chic, she needs a dedicated post.

        Posted by: sarah  |  2009-05-08 20:36:06

Jessica Alba doesn't belong on this list. I suggest you remove her and replace her with GWEN STEFANI!!! How could you even forget to put her on the list!?

        Posted by: S-R  |  2009-05-08 16:15:01

Chloe - Nicole Richie is black and Jessica Alba is latin. Calm down. All you should see here is fashion, not race.

        Posted by: Sarah  |  2009-05-08 15:54:02

Why are all of these moms light skinned? There should be some sort of variation between races. come on.

aaaah the party tiger sweater! hehee. Love this post. Love you guys!

Michelle and Matilda look great! :D I love Michelle's shoes.

        Posted by: Amy  |  2009-05-08 13:13:57

To 20somethingirl: Leni is Heidi's kid from another guy...not technically Seals. That is why she doesn't look "mixed" I love Nicole and Kate...they never disappoint!

        Posted by: gypsy  |  2009-05-08 13:10:42

I guess stylish mothers can only be blondes. No brunettes? Nicole takes the cake on this one though. www.fashionintel.com

        Posted by: Fashion Intel  |  2009-05-08 11:14:20

Why don't Heidi Klum & Seal's kids look mixed? I don't get it. http://20somethingirl.wordpress.com

        Posted by: 20somethingirl  |  2009-05-08 09:27:07

I think Jessica is a beautiful girl, but her mommy style has actually consistently disappointed me. Flip flops? Nicole has the best mommy style.

        Posted by: Katie  |  2009-05-08 09:17:52

awww it's incredible how amazing they look considering they're moms! :) http://yvetteyeau.com

        Posted by: Yvette  |  2009-05-08 07:32:04

I have had the Kimchi dress Nicole Richie is wearing since last summer! I love Claudia Schiffer's scarf & yellow shirt.... and Michelle Williams looks like her efortlessly cool self! One question: Where is Gwen?? Surely she is one of the hottest mommas out there!!!

        Posted by: Gillian  |  2009-05-08 05:59:00

regardless of any stance on fur, a child should not be wearing it.

        Posted by: justine  |  2009-05-08 05:03:22

honor's face and position makes me chuckle. she looks like she belongs in the mob. so cute.
