What They Wear: Stylish Mothers
As an office full of daughters, we get a touch tenderhearted when we come across photos of our favorite trendsetters with their wee little girls in tow. There's something so cute about these yummy mummies and their mini-me kids, we simply had to share a few with you today. Consider it an ode to our own marvelous mothers—Carole, Kit, Mieko, Ruth, Rosario, Lynne, and Wendy.
No matter if you are sans children or have a whole brood, this stylish sextet offers outfit-inspiration for all. Whether you like Nicole Richie's classic denim jacket (a perfect pick) or momma Moss' oversized earrings (she started the trend!), today's story is full of highly wearable pieces that will easily fit into anyone's wardrobe. Of course, if clothes and accessories aren't your cup of tea, we can recommend a fashionable and fantastic alternative: Cynthia Rowley's Bicycle Built for Three ($1200, 212.242.3803). It looks much like the designer's Gossip Girl-featured cruiser, but Rowley designed this one with families in mind, complete with a baby seat. In our pre-WWW days, we once interviewed Heidi Klum for a story and were struck by how down-to-earth and lovely she is in person. Klum's just as authentically casual in her off-duty clothing choices, as she demonstrated during a stroll through Soho last month with Leni, her darling chip-off-the-block daughter, by her side. ($120), and a festive Party Tiger Sweater ($82) by Something. While Klum kept things relatively sober (save for the zesty sweater), Leni preferred to be pretty in a pink via a Juicy Couture Kids' Trimmed Puffer Coat ($258), rugby-stripe dress, and tights—all in her favorite color.

There are loads of lovely moms in Hollywood, but few are as perfectly put together as Nicole Richie. Between her high-impact, low fuss bangs and easy-chic outfits, Richie's mastered the mommy mix. Of course, her gorgeous little girl is always turned out too; just check out Harlow's daring purple-and-red combo! The fashionable pair showed off their style sensibilities in West Hollywood last month, with Momma Richie in Paige Premium Denim's Vermont Denim Jacket ($198), an Urban Outfitters dress, Wolford tights, and Imitation of Christ booties and Harlow in See Kai Run's Monica Shoes ($32).

Maybe we're unrealistic, we think we could bear being told to eat our peas and pick up our rooms if these dictates were coming from the always artfully attired Ms. Moss. Especially if it meant that we'd have access to the Chanel dress, Zana velvet shawl, YSL sandals, and silver chandelier earrings that she wore to Leah Wood's wedding! (Lila Grace played dress-up in a vintage fur shrug that day.) While most of us don't have the bank account or body to buy and wear Moss' outfit, her earrings can be approximated with ease. No disrespect meant, but we have vague memories of what our moms wore when we were little ones, and somehow we doubt they managed to pull off "understated cool" quite like Michelle Williams. The eighties were interesting in their own right, surely, but we don't remember seeing anything that was the equivalent of Balmain's Heart Tank ($777) or No. 6's Black Leather Buckle Boots ($340) in their closets! The actress showed off this enviable ensemble on a walk in Brooklyn with Matilda, who looked equally cute in a Lucy Sykes dress from the Spring 08 collection. If you'd like to emulate Williams' top, but are looking for something less pricey, try Rika's Elisa Blouse ($210) with a crisp pair of dark denim shorts and your favorite ankle booties.

As we learned in the recent British Vogue, an unimaginable clothing collection awaits Clementine, as her mother has a 30,000 square foot, climate-controlled warehouse full of stuff she picked up at shoots and shows over the past twenty-odd years. While we wonder about what that amazing treasure trove holds, at least we can enjoy the wonderful outfits Schiffer wears to drop off her tot at school. I know Kate Moss is fine with fur, but it seems over the top to have a child wearing it. Kids get dirty & run a muk, I want to see children in children's clothing! Give her a cute peacoat or something! And I agree that Katie Holmes does belong on there & that picture of Heidi Klum isn't so flattering. I personally don't see her as a fashion icon, I see her as a model icon.

i agree with g says. lila's little pouty face and questionable fur make me veto the obvious fashionable mommy. i think the only acceptable stylish mommy looks are on michelle and claudia, different ages and styles appropriate for that reason. nicole, jessica and heidi? please. so LA. i would've liked a better dig for someone european. karen elson maybe?

I find Lila (Kate Moss's little one) wearing fur rather disturbing...If it is faux fur then I suppose "playing dress up" is ok..But if an animal has been harmed to make that shrug then Lila should know exactly what she is wearing and what poor little furry animal was killed..How would she like it if her little puppy was killed for fashion????

that pic of kate m is so old....i don't think this post has enjoyed much in the way of research. i agree gwen s should be on here. i don't personally think heidi dresses well without a stylist, and there are some way cooler moms with older kids, like yasmin le bon, i mean she is SO chic, she needs a dedicated post.
