What They Wear: Cold Weather Chic

Your WhoWhatWear.com editors are a little bitter toward the heat wave that's transpiring in Southern California (it's mid-January and in the eighties!), so we're thinking cool thoughts and dedicating this story to our readers who reside in more chilly locales. Besides, it's only a matter of time before the region's bipolar weather causes the thermometer to drop back down for us, too. That being said, we thought it best to provide everyone with some fresh ideas for wearing winter clothes (with the help of a few trusted style muses, of course)!

There's something about cold weather that evokes happy-go-lucky sentiments in us all, as it brings lots of lovely activities to mind: sipping hot chocolate, relaxing by the fireplace, even just watching a glistening snow fall! A less-picturesque aspect of wintry climates is the sight of oneself in the mirror, looking like a marshmallow on account of improperly-styled winter apparel. This situation, along with a few other seasonal-related fashion dilemmas (over-accessorizing, bland color combos) are common pitfalls to fall into around this time of year, because the colder the weather gets, the trickier it is to stay chic.

However, all is not lost, dear readers! Take for instance, the snug outfit Kate Hudson wore on a coffee run in New York City earlier this month. She stayed quite stylish by layering a Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Belted Boho Cardi ($328, 310.385.0557) over a chunky neutral turtleneck, pale leggings, and Loeffler Randall boots. Hudson earned fashion kudos, thanks her sweater's funky seventies vibe and tan footwear selection (in lieu of predictable black boots). Chloe Sevigny also opted for unexpected shoes for her cold weather ensemble. While running errands in Soho, the Big Love actress wore some heeled red Dr. Martens Boots ($110) that accentuated her vintage red beanie (try Capelli's New York Chunky Knit Beanieicon ($11) as an alternative) and oversized, toggle-embellished leather coat. When choosing winter outerwear, it's important to pick something with deep pockets (like Sevigny's) to keep your hands warm!

Since we can always count on Agyness Deyn to charm us with her innovative getups, we turned to her, once again, for guidance today! The bona-fide supermodel reminded us how fabulous uncommon fabrics can be by wearing a large corduroy jacket while walking her dog in NYC a few weeks ago. Deyn made her outfit even more interesting by sporting some bright red jeans (perhaps recycled from last spring's colored denim craze?), patent lace-up boots, and a cossack-style hat. If you are looking for a more classic look,, consider the cozy and chic outfit that we spotted on Blake Lively. While filming earlier this month, the Gossip Girl looked dapper in a slate blue Alberta Ferretti Coat ($3635, 212.632.9300), JBrand Skinny Jeans ($160), Delman Giddyup Boots ($290), and Bryna Nicole Loyola Satchel ($320).

Our final inspiration today is courtesy of the au courant getup that Kirsten Dunst recently displayed in Soho. Dunst mixed patterns to an alluring degree by wearing her checkered Opening Ceremony All-Occasion Cardigan ($300, 310.652.1120) with a floral printed skirt. While black tights will never go out of style, it's refreshing to see Dunst keep her legs warm with a gray pair. We can also learn from her preference for an across-body bag, because it leaves your hands free to be cozily-tucked in your pockets!—Jessica Amento

D, I love your comment. I began reading the post and couldn't finish it...actually I skimmed through it. I felt like the fashions displayed are not "WINTER MATERIAL." I don't live in Canada as you do but I am from Russia and currently live in NYC. Although Russian, I definitely was NOT made for the cold weather and have to constantly wear layers. I look like a marshmallow throughout the winter!! I hope someone provides some good advice about thinning yet warm clothing for those below zero temperatures!

I love doc martens! I bought a pair in pink for my sister for christmas :) Aggy and Chloe's outfits are so adorable! beautyandthestreet.blogspot.com

Why is everyone in love Blake Lively’s style. A knee length coat, boots and gloves? That’s basically the standard winter outfit. It doesn’t look bad, but it’s by no means inspiring. That outfit takes no creativity. If they wanted to feature someone from gossip girl Leighton Meister or Taylor Mommsen’s characters have a much more unique sense of style, and are much more inspiring to do something unique. Agyness Deyn looks like a crack head per usual. Granted she may have several trendy pieces of clothing on, the look as a whole is totally bizarre. Her clothes don’t fit and who wears pants that are the same color as their shoes? Kate Hudson’s outfit is cute for so cal winter. Chloe Sevigny looks adorable as always, but kind of looks like she forgot her pants. She does a good job of incorporating winter trends in a subtle way. Kirsten Dunst has amazing boots, much cuter than doc martins. Besides the boots her outfit is completely scattered. Her outfits are always so strange. None of the outfits are particularly warm and do not really apply to the title of the post, cold weather chic. It would be much more appropriately titled, so cal cold weather chic.

i don't know about you guys, but i can't wear tights in below freezing temperatures unless it's with a long coat. http://www.sugarrockcatwalk.com

No new posts in three days? WWW what's up?

http://therefugex.blogspot.com/ although i dont get to wear winter clothes, this was still pretty cool and i dont like deyn..or her style.

I laugh at what they are wearing, plus what you all have to say. -2 is not cold, -10 is not cold. It is -25 to -35 here. That is cold.

Posted by: yh |  2009-01-19 00:27:15

In Toronto, there's a high of NEGATIVE 7 degrees Celsius and a few days ago it was -20, feels like -40 due to wind. I have yet to see a post about fashionable WINTER clothing too. It's not really a priority when your priority is to just not freeze. I don't think WWW editors can do it...lack of experience/knowledge in the cold? Challenge, maybe? But I'll give them the benifit of the doubt and say there aren't a lot of celebrities hanging around winter cursed cities to photograph and talk about their styles.

blake lively's and chloe sevigny's are my favorite! i love it<3

p.s. i love the tan boots! i'm not a huge fan of the doc martens though.

Blake Lively & Kate Hudson's looks are my favorite! Blake looks so chic and sophisticated and Kate looks comfortable and cute. fashion-frenzi.blogspot.com

the boots are incredible. every single one of em. hannahwanna.blogspot.com

I really love Chloe and Kate outfits. Blake looks classy but too predictable.

This Minnesotan definitely agrees with the Canadians-elementary and high schools have been closing around here because of the cold while I freeze on public transportation going to work! These outfits are great for me at work after I shed my snow pants and puffer-Aygness isn't even wearing gloves!!

Posted by: Jaclyn |  2009-01-16 22:11:09

I live in Texas, so I don't have a problem with any of these outfits. Except that they might be too heavy. haha. But it seems like everyone replying to this lives in the north.

Posted by: sarah |  2009-01-16 21:38:07

I agree. These outfits look great but are not practical for snow, rain, wind and all sorts of winter bitterness in Seattle. Tights are not an option in this weather unless they're worn under a pair of pants! Another post, about maintaining some sense of fashion in REAL cold weather would be awesome though!

Posted by: Soup |  2009-01-16 20:43:08

Thanks for doing cooler weather outerwear.. Except in Toronto it's -30 degrees Celsius. Sort of a couple months late.. It's good fall outerwear for 09.. I suppose.

I know that some girls mentioned that Blake's outfit is rather dull but it's very classical and seems to never go out of style. Also, she's dressing for her character on GG and she's a very laid back girl. If you're wanting a more dressy, girly winter outfit check out Leighton on GG! I'm not really feeling Agyness's outfit. Everything looks fine until you get down to the boots and up to the hat.. Kate's outfit is just gorgeous. She definitely deserves 1st place. Kristin and Chloe's outfits are well put together as well but like everyone else has already said, they're not very winter friendly. It's also -5 degrees where I live and tights are NOT an option. They would be a very cute fall outfits though.

even though i don't usually like chloe sevigny's style, i would say she gets first place here, not kate.

good for REALLY cold dressing: http://stockholmstreetstyle.feber.se/ x egotrippingatthegates.blogspot

hehe there seems to be lots of canadians on this site. i agree with you all! it's way too cold these days to pull off any of these looks but they are inspirational.. ur so lucky to be in california where it's warm

For real style and warmth look at the Charlotte and Catherine woolens by Lou Doillon in the Lee Cooper collection. They have 5/4 sleeves and an amazingly soft mix of woool and acrylic. they are uber cool and have 30% off in the Sale at www.leecooper-online.com Great Lave and Charcoal colours.

Those tan boots from Loeffler Randall are amazing! I think the cheapest place online to buy them is at www.habitatshoes.com. http://www.habitatshoes.com/see/loeffler_randall/matilde

AS USUAL: a lovely update from www! and kate looks pretty okay, but nothing wow. agyness looks like a child because compensates for her mediocre type of beauty of horridly loud clothes and style. blake looks so effortlessly chic. i love the navy on her! chloe looks creative and artsy. like, she is the only one who can actually look GOOD in such an outfit. and kirsten is adorable and artsy looking. true she doesn't have what the mainstream would call "a fashionable style" but she's got her own effortless thing going on and i like that a lot.

kate is stunning!!!!!

Posted by: lara |  2009-01-16 11:37:26

Good post, but pleeease post realistic outfits. I'd be covered in frostbites if I wore these out in the winter. Even with the knee high boots, you at least need to have a furry lining to keep your toes from going numb. I don't think you guys understand that it is -10 degrees in other parts of the country.

Posted by: aimy |  2009-01-16 11:04:42

I agree, these work for fall but not for real winter! I'm also in Chicago where the high yesterday was 1F, I have yet to see a fashionable way to stay warm for real people!

Posted by: Jessica |  2009-01-16 10:32:08

I agree, this would not be how you dress in DC with weather like today. You would really need: long thermal underwear underneath pants, atleast 2 pairs of socks, heavy boots, atleast 3 shirts, a scarf, warm gloves, earmuffs and a heavy coat just to survive walking to your car!

Posted by: DCgirl |  2009-01-16 10:31:28

Agreed by everyone who previously posted. These girls are dressing for 50 degree weather, not 20 and windy as hell in Philadelphia. If i wore leggings like these girls i would have to have my legs amputated due to frostbite. How about ladies looking chic when its so cold you can't feel your face?

Posted by: Emily kurlansik |  2009-01-16 10:18:03

Chloe's my favorite look. She looks gorgeous and classy. Love everything about her look: the coat, the boots, the mini barely seen under the coat. She is proof it can be freezing cold and you can STILL be cute. I appreciate the pop of red at opposite ends of the ensemble. Keeps an all-black outfit very interesting. Just brilliant!

Posted by: Lizzie |  2009-01-16 09:47:09

I think these are great looks. And I TOO live in Canada, BUT here in Vancouver, BC, it's warm enough to wear all of these outfits :)It's around 5 degrees in this part of Canada and I'm wearing a cardigan, a dress, mary-janes and tights right now, with a wool trench for when I go outside! All of these winter looks are perfect for the West Coast...maybe you should call this West Coast Winter Wear and do an East Coast Winter Wear for everyone out East who seems to be freezing their butts off.

Posted by: Wanderlusting |  2009-01-16 09:14:45

unfortunately, these are 'fall' cold weather outfits. As has already been pointed out, here in Chicago, fashion pretty much takes a backseat to the functionality of a big, inevitably ugly coat. Mine is from Eddie Bauer, is teal, and resembles a sleeping bag. I can't really wear anything else right now.....love fashion, hate dying of frostbite ;-)

Posted by: blinkbunny |  2009-01-16 08:35:55

mochababe: I agree, so dull! I didn't quite recognize Chloe at first, cute boots. I like Kate's sweater as well. Unfortunately something about Kirsten is always off to me.

Posted by: SheShe |  2009-01-16 08:25:14

Everyone looks so cute. However, I just don't get why everyone is so enamored with Blake Lively. I find her style dull, unexciting, and boring.

Posted by: mochababe73 |  2009-01-16 08:20:47

Great post, particularly as i live in england and its freezing at the moment! I absolutely love chloe's look, those boots are gorgeous.

Posted by: N |  2009-01-16 07:57:26

Well WWW be happy it's 80 and not a high of 2 today here in Chicago, these outfits are all cute, but wouldn't keep me warm in this weather we are having, hopefully this won't last for long!! Thanks for the tip as always!

Posted by: chelsea |  2009-01-16 07:53:04

omg i love blake livelys outfit... she looks so gorgerous :) love it

Posted by: Allie |  2009-01-16 07:26:27

These would all be appropriate cold weather outfits... in Los Angeles. How about a post with stylish coats, hats, gloves, heavy duty boots, etc. for climates like NY and Chicago?

Posted by: anna |  2009-01-16 07:20:11

i Loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee kate hudson's outfit!! I want the sweater and everything!!

Posted by: Taryn |  2009-01-16 07:10:31

This is a great post. It's 4 degrees here today in Louisville, KY. Luckily I bought a long brown faux fur coat from Express earlier this year that pretty much keeps me warm everywhere.

Posted by: taylor |  2009-01-16 06:58:06

Thanks for covering what to wear in frigid temperatures. I'd love to see a stylish outfit that actually keeps people warm- none of these girls are wearing hats or regular pants (leggings are not known for their warmth), which are two necessary items for the cold. Could you post another set of cold weather muses that are bundled up and fashionable? Us ladies in cold cities need the inspiration.

Posted by: emma |  2009-01-16 06:38:55

I'm with Stephanie on this one. I live in a city called Saskatoon (in Canada) -38C out... dressing for this kind of cold can be quite the fashion dillema. Today I'm wearing an oversized red touque (beanie), grey wool harem pants, brown Docs and three pairs of socks, and a navy blue peacoat layered over a 1/4 dozen tees. GOOD LUCK WINTER DRESSING for anybody in Canada or equally cold areas! It's hard to look chic when accesories are often covered by your coat and tights are out of the question.

Posted by: Ashley |  2009-01-16 06:18:10

Great post WWW! The muses look amazing! The only favour I would like to ask and love to see a post on is acutual winter fashion. where i live it's currently -40 (celsius) with about 6 feet of snow on the ground. Therefore none of these boots are an option(they salt the streets so we don't break our necks on the ice and the salt literally attacks any footwear) This is a post more relevant for our (short) fall season. It would be soo awesome if you guys could do a complete winter wear post! With us loyal Canadian readers in mind;-)

Posted by: stephanie |  2009-01-16 05:21:08

I wouldn't be complaining about the heat if I were you. It is literally bitter here in NY, in the negatives. Aside from that though, I love everyone except Agyness and Dunst.
