We’re not particularly sentimental people, but today we’d like to ease into the new year by taking a moment to look back. On that note, we’ve compiled the above images of a few of our fashion-forward favorites. As you surely know by now, we’ve got a soft spot for innovative ladies who take risks with what they wear. While our subjects may not all be the obvious suspects for a typical best-dressed list, these gals piqued our interest all year long, thanks to their truly personal sense of style.
1. Natalia Vodianova
We adore how this Russian lovely made her fancy frock ultra modern by pairing it with Kova & T’s must-have oxy leggings and a pair of jazz shoes.
2. Vanessa Traina
Traina continues to be one to watch thanks to her impeccable, cutting-edge taste. Seen here at the opening of the Barneys New York store in San Francisco (her family hosted the festivities, naturally), Traina wore scuba-chic Lanvin, Prada heels, and opaques.
3.
Daisy Lowe
One of the best things about Daisy Lowe is her obvious delight in fashion. She’s got a playful sense of style that’s still far more sophisticated than her stateside peers. We dig that she wore age-appropriate (and darling) shorts to a Topshop party during London Fashion Week.
4. Ashley Olsen and 5. Mary Kate Olsen
We’d be remiss if we didn’t include the Sisters Olsen, so here they are at a Neiman Marcus spring preview of their line, Elizabeth and James. For those curious about the upcoming collection, Ashley (left) is wearing the E&J Parachute Dress from Spring 08. On another note, this duo is always perfectly shod, as the above image exemplifies. We swooned for Ashley’s Manolo Blahnik studded heels and Mary Kate’s bright Loubis.
6. Kate Moss
We couldn't possibly have a best-dressed list sans the Glossy Mossy! This year she continued to put her stamp on the way the world dresses with her line for Topshop. We applauded her hands-on design approach and how she further spotlighted the collections by wearing her own garb everywhere. Seen here at the 7th on Sale Gala, she wore her own wares, of course.
7. Kate Bosworth
Who would have guessed that the lovely little lady from Blue Crush would end up so well-dressed? Bosworth is fearless on the red carpet—seen here in Etro—and this experimental and bold spirit should be celebrated.
8. Tatiana Santo Domingo
We don’t devote loads of times to socialites, but this Colombian beauty is chic enough to make the cut. Seen here at a cocktail party for Valentino at the Gramery Park Hotel in New York in April, we couldn’t help but note her stunning, simple style.
9. Chloe Sevigny
Bouncing along to the beat of her own drummer, Sevigny is always interesting and spectacularly original. She’s always one of the first to try a new trend and combines them in wonderful ways, like above, when she wore an
across-body bag and
little leather with her party dress.
10. Alexa Chung
Another new to WWWD face, this one belongs to British model-turned-host/it girl, Alexa Chung. While she doesn’t have tons of credits to her name yet, she’s notable for elevating the year’s typical indie-style to something special.
11. Jenni Kayne
Finally we have the darling Jenni Kayne, who’s not only a successful designer but also happens to be perfectly put-together as well (a rare double quality). Kayne is an ideal example of a woman who knows how to mix high/low and new/old to a sublime fashion. She's seen here in her own designs (the maxi-skirt is superb, as is the well-chosen belt) at a dinner celebrating the opening of her new store in Los Angeles. Locals take note: today marks the beginning of a blowout sale on Kayne’s fall merchandise. Call the store for details, 310.860.0123.

Anyone have an idea of wear I can grab Daisy Lowe's shorts? She's number 3. thank youuuu

Um, I'd like to thank Dani for her brillant comment. NOT. Honey, before you go around acting like race doesnt exist, why don't you take a dose of reality firsT? What you are talking about are 3 seperate issues. 1. Black people in America contribute to a very large percentage of retail and fashion sales, as well as setting trends and designing clothes. Have you ever walked on a campus like hmm howard university, reportedly the best dressed campus in the US??(Yes, I do go there but it's true!) I think NOT. I beg to differ that there aren't black people, status or not, with personal and unique and individual style. 2. I think we all know the media tends to cover more stories concerning white people 3. Do you honestly think the reason there are racial issues is because people keep "noticing" skin color? What, am I supposed to ignore my beautiful skin tone in order to make the world a better place? I think not. How about acknowledging the beauty that all women, all races, and all colors contain? And understanding that beauty cannot be defined; only expresed. And that it is in those expressions, the multifacted, unique, different, and unsuaul expressions that we each find our niche or *gasp* create our own style thus making us an individual.THAT would be getting past racial issues when concerning beauty/fashion.

MK and Ash are the best! But Ashley has absolutely great dress! <3

BTW, to the WWWD people: PLEASE "devote" more time to socialites, not less! They can be style icons, too, no? (Babe Paley, anyone?) I mean, if you're going for glam, socialites are better than every other under-30 "actress" captured in the pages of US, Star, and In Touch. That said, this Tatiana gal doesn't look too fab. Pick another next time.

Agree with earlier post about Vanessa. Love the dress. And the shoes (Nine West makes a good knock-off btw), the make-up, the 'tude, everything. SO simple and chic. Sure, the girl's got buckets of money, but so does Paris and company and they don't ever come close. More Vanessa! And her sis, Victoria!

I really love Daisy Lowe..she's a darling sweetheart and her style portrays that. She's lovely.

I find it really disappointing that so many minorities pull out the race card and turn something into a race issue when it is not. I'm black and I quite honestly don't even notice what color people's skin is until someone like "hmmm" points it out. WWWD has featured people like rihanna, as well as other women of color. It's also very contradicting when you look at what 'hmmm' was saying because she would like race and class to be addressed more but I know I'm not the only one who does not appreciate when people point out skin color. It means people are still noticing which is actually the cause of many of the REAL racial problems the world is still facing. This means that if you are one of those people, you are part of the problem. Fashion editors are not purposely leaving out women of color, it just so happens that only few of them showed UNIQUE, PERSONAL style, which is certainly not the editors fault. So stop criticizing and stop noticing skin color and race so much, it's handicapping so many people and it's just sad.

i am easily offended that not one african-american woman is posted as a personal style icon. what about zoe kravitz or haile berry, or kelis? rethink this wwwd...

Loving what Daisy Lowe is wearing! High-waisted shorts SO CUTE!

LOVE what Ashley is wearing. The color pops. It's a great demanding, fun color! It looks fab on her. I love fashion!!! I splurge on a few fine designer pieces a year. I would like to find a great brand that is well made that does not break the bank! :)

more alexa chung pls!
Posted by: lauren | 2008-01-04 13:08:05
tracee ellis ross and thandie newton are two extremey stylish and unique fashionistas who could have with credibility added diversity to this selection. now that's said: i lve ashley's orange dress and alexa chung's style.
Posted by: id | 2008-01-04 12:08:42
I really like Chloe Sevigny's unconcventional style! She's so original.
Posted by: Salem | 2008-01-04 05:09:03
Let us not forget that WWWD is a business not a fashion clique! They serve their suscribers with their expert taste, views, and opinions. If they do not present their suscribers with images that they can relate to, then they will lose interest and no longer come to this site. There are too many women of color with great style. Next time give us some diversity. Lol!

man where are irina l and alice dellal?
Posted by: ninah | 2008-01-03 15:30:35
kelis and rhianna?? youve got to be kidding me. the fact that rhianna is even being called fashion forward is disgusting, she is totally styled everywhere she goes. how about genevieve jones, the style.com socialite it-girl? she worked her way up in the fashion world and doesnt even do anything, but she puts together some great outfits! I LOOVE that u guys put kate bosworth there, i think her new style is so fab. and vanessa traina wears some great things too, though shes a bit like all the other LA girls. Tatiana's dress is ugly though, why would you feature her?
Posted by: Ar | 2008-01-03 12:10:08
they are all gorgeous very nice to see my british girls rocking the party. totally agree with megan, we adore alexa, but where is agyness dean!! xxx
Posted by: jessy | 2008-01-03 09:54:13
Why is Chloe on the list all the time? I agree she's original but to me it doesn't look good. At least the Olsens and Kate look polished. Maybe I've just had enough with the whole mixed-up look. Please change it: Tatiana Santo Domingo hails from Colombia. Glad to see I'm not the only one who noticed.
Posted by: JujyFruits | 2008-01-03 01:15:40
I agree with a lot of WWWD's picks (such as the Olsens and Kate Moss who do NOT have stylists, and Kate B and Vanessa). In regards to the "rich, white, thin" comments...first off, of course ANY picks would have to be people who are celebrities/socialites/industry people, etc and all those people are successful and therefore RICH. It doesn't matter if these celebs are white or black, celebs are celebs and thus will be rich. And usually thin as well. This is America and thinness reigns unfortunately. The comment about Kelis and Rihanna, sorry but those girls are not fashion forward at all. Thandie Newton would be my pick for a "person of color" with great style...
Posted by: audrey | 2008-01-02 21:13:50
in reply to:hmmm, I totally agree with u about the whole race issue! Im african american myself and I find it absurd that only white, rich,THIN people get credited for having great style... Im sure kelis and rihanna could have made this list!Kelis STARTED the high rise jean trend but whatever, great post tho.. i love MK's loubis !
Posted by: vikky | 2008-01-02 20:46:12
I love both the Kate's MK and Ashley and Chloe, also the girl to her right in the tee with satin skirt! All these ladies look like SEXY bitches!! Also, I know that marykate and ashley do not have stylists, and i know a lot of celebrities (paris hilton for one) with ZERO style and tons of money!!
Posted by: kate | 2008-01-02 20:24:12
Alexa Chung is big in England and her fashion is inspiring, slightly different to the cloned LA girls!
Posted by: Megan | 2008-01-02 18:22:26
omg ur all bitches jus admire the clothes whores!!!kiss my va jj
Posted by: shona | 2008-01-02 18:14:24

I've noticed several times that Chloe does a great job of pairing mid-height boots (neither ankle booties nor knee highs) with skirts. Anyone know who designed her boots here? (Miu Miu from a/w 06 perhaps? Dries from a/w 07?)
Posted by: Mavenda | 2008-01-02 15:30:44
i love that bright blue scarf. anyone know where i could get a similar one?
Posted by: maria | 2008-01-02 13:18:04
I don't think fashion publications have to address race and class as if they were academic publications or anything like that, but it's a bit of a bummer when a list like this includes only rich white women. What I meant was that it would be much more interesting to see a feature such as this that included women of color and women from different economic backgrounds. Fashion should be fun, of course, but it would be so much cooler and more subversive if it were more inclusive, and it would be nice if issues like this were kept in mind by fashion editors. I love fashion but I love to think about issues in the world too, and that thinking involves race and class issues that aren't necessarily tossed out the window when I am reading a fashion piece. Anyway, just something to think about for a second for the fashion editors out there. I do like this site a lot despite this comment. Okay enough fooling around for me, back to work.

Oh I forgot to add how awesome all the ladies above look. great post WWWD!
Posted by: christine | 2008-01-02 12:07:34
I have to disagree with the people saying that these women have loads of money and stylists that's why they look good. There are numerous numerous (twice for emphasis) celebrities and socialites with stashes of cash and Rachel Zoe on speed dial who don't look great, Lindsay Lohan anyone. So, looking great in clothes requires a healthy dose of personal style, chic and je ne sais quoi regardless of the size of one's bank account. Besides, Kate Moss certainly doesn't have a stylist, if she did, she would have garnered some sort of publicity.
Posted by: christine | 2008-01-02 12:05:32
Although these leading ladies have great style, these days all of them, if not most, have stylists that dress them everyday. It is hard to look up to a celebrity without knowing if they picked that outfit or not.
Posted by: Nell B | 2008-01-02 11:10:35
"we don't care who you're dating or if you eat. we only care about what you wear." why should fashion have to address race and class? can't it just be about beautiful clothes? we should all be able to appreciate beautiful things no matter how much/how little money you have...
Posted by: hungover | 2008-01-02 10:59:39
These ladies killed it in 07. Im looking forward to seeing whats going to be killer hot this New Year!
Posted by: Marie | 2008-01-02 10:46:16
fyi, tatiana santo domingo is colombian, not brasilian, ladies.
Posted by: mosha | 2008-01-02 10:37:01
some good choices, but I'm disappointed that there are no black women (or really any other women of color) included. certainly you could have found some to include in this list. also, it's not as hard to dress well when you are a celebrity or socialite and have tons of money--how about a list that includes regular gals that make an average living? I know the fashion world doesn't normally address issues such as race and class but it sure would be more interesting if it did.
Posted by: hmmm | 2008-01-02 10:36:51
love your list tho, wheres Agyness Deyn? x
Posted by: Chrissi | 2008-01-02 10:00:20
love this list tho I don't think the olsens should actually be on it this year. but when aren't they on a list?
Posted by: jess | 2008-01-02 09:43:00
I love your list but I think Jessica Alba should've been on it. While her style veers more toward classic, chic pieces that some might find boring ~ although not a risk taker she always looks FAB! Happy New Year!
Posted by: Nandi | 2008-01-02 09:30:24
agyness deyn?

i didn't get this in my inbox... hmmm but i do love chloe and mk- great style. kate bosworth i believe should not have been on this list- she annoys me in many ways, and looks horrible.
Posted by: donier. | 2008-01-02 02:26:44
i really love them all. they all usually look amazing, and atleast they are different if they dont always look perfect.
