On that note, our latest dude du jour, Joel Madden, is particularly well equipped to stand up in front of any audience. As the lead singer of Good Charlotte, we figured Madden’s seen his share of great and ghastly personal style and would be able to articulate what he likes the ladies to wear. Even though he’s currently on the road, wrapping up the US tour for the band’s latest album, Good Morning Revival (New Yorkers, they’re playing at Roseland tonight), Madden still took the time to break down five outfits for WhoWhatWear.com. We love that he’s clearly aware of the latest looks (as you’d expect from a man who’s dating fashion daredevil and delight, Nicole Richie), but doesn’t blindly endorse trends just because they’re current. Read on for his pop culturally astute point of view (and a sweet disclaimer)...
Of course, it goes without saying that I’m no fashion editor. I’m just a redneck from southern Maryland. All these girls seem very nice and are really pretty, so just because I don’t like their outfits, that doesn’t mean they’re not cool people—obviously.
Look 1
This outfit looks like something my fourth grade teacher would have worn on a field trip. Don't get me wrong; if my fourth grade teacher looked like this, I would have been stoked. But still, it’s a little old. I like high-waisted shorts, but not when they’re so loose and baggy. The shorts would look better if they were tighter and you could see her hourglass figure.
Look 2
I don’t like her outfit. It looks like something John Cusack’s character in Say Anything would have worn, if he was a girl who liked booty shorts. I do like the wingtips though; I just don’t like them with her socks and cut-offs. I think they would look better with pants.
Look 3
Her bag, the jacket, and her top are all great, but the skirt is just weird. I know high-waisted stuff is really in right now, but I think everyone’s overusing it. I love her black fingernails, but not the socks and shoes. Her whole outfit would have been better with something basic, like a pair of Chucks or Vans.
Look 4
Well, my girlfriend is going to hate me for saying this, but this look reminds me of her style—especially the headband and bunches of beads. She’s also going to hate me for saying this, but I don’t like when girls wear leggings. Anyway, going back to the headband, this one looks like you’re supposed to wear it with a flapper dress. I would dig a different headband style, like maybe a scarf? Yeah, a scarf would look better with this outfit. Also, I wish all Balenciaga bags could be thrown into a big hole and buried forever.
Look 5
The jeans are cool and very seventies with the brown belt. She looks like it's 1979, I mean that in a good way, a sexy way. The tight top is nice because it shows her body off since she's wearing bigger pants. I also like how all of the accessories are mismatched. The jacket throws everything off, though. It has a military vibe that just doesn’t fit with the rest of the outfit. I think it would have looked better with just the cardigan. I also think the hat looks like a chinchilla—it’s just a weird choice. So if you take off the hat and the blazer, I like this outfit.

Ohh my I love Joel and his band Good Charlotte! they rock! ... but I don´t agree in two things... HEADBANDS AND THE BELENCIAGA aree soo cool! and even leggings! man she shall reconsider that lol But he is totally right, the combinations of the hight waisted shorts and the jackets a total mistake!!!

Agyness Deyn always looks like she got her clothes out of the dumpster. i generally try to avoid looking like the hobo you see when you get off the freeway. Why on earth does this website keep posting pictures of her as if she were a fashion icon?

Hehe, I'm not a fan of Good Charlotte but this guy's kinda funny. 1. I'm not into big high-waisted shorts. It looks unflattering and even a bit old... So I agree with Joel. 2. WHAAAAT I love Aggy's blazer and top!! I'm a huge fan of blazers, but not cut off jean shorts. Love those kicks, too. 3. ...don't like. It makes her look super petite. Really not into the whole outfit actually. 4. Are Balenciaga bags that bad? xD Well, I'm not a fan of the outfit, either. Leggings are nice, but I think solid colored ones look best. If there's a pattern, it shouldn't be colored black and white...too zebra. 5. I like this outfit! What's with Joel and blazers? :(

Word. Thanks for spelling it out for us Joel, personally I think your a no talent db, but your fashion opinion, proves that you are no slouch. YES guys hate leggings, Thank GOD people are going to listen. If you're constantly dateless, please, please realize that your cottage cheese thighs and bloated cankles are actually accentuated by leggings and are not helping helping your cause. Agnyness always looks an androgynous barbie doll that has been dressed by a 5 year old. And Joel you are right on with the highwasted crap. If you have a large stomach, don't wear high-waisted pants, your stomach and crotch always forms into a colossal sized FOOMPA!

I love A Guy's Opinion, its one of my fav posts on this site. And its especially cool they got Joel Madden. Have u guys noticed a LOT of guys hate leggings?? Idk why that is, maybe because they dont think of it as an actual out-of-the-house piece of clothing. Idk. Anyway, agreed with everything he said, lovely ladies, but their outfits not so much. Could use improvement..I like how he wasn't an ass too!!

i'm in a total state of shock..i agree with everythinggg he just said, which i guess was mostly that simplicity is key. i think a lot of women should remember that phrase more often. they just try too hard to stand out and it ends up looking idiotic.

Love it. And while all may not agree that J. Madden is stylish, he does rock a certain style. Also, my husband absolutely agrees with him!--He also hates leggings and B. bags. And for the record, I have serious doubts about Aggy Deyn's clothes, basically b/c she DOES look like she's channeling Cusack from "Say Anything"! Good choice WWWD!

He's dead-on....everyone may freak about the balenciaga bag comment, but its so true that it may be a pretty purse, its sooo overworn every other girl on the street is carrying one, and its been like that for the last two years...i love leggings but i understand his comment, people wear them in ways that dont work, i.e. with other overly trendy things (balenciaga bag, hippie headband, long layered necklaces) like in #4

I love #5's outfit, but I agree the hat needs to go, it just looks silly. #4, I really wish the whole world would just stop doing the stupid head band/scarf thing around their head. It looks like those elastic things parents put around their new baby girls head to jazz up their bald heads so that you know it's a girl. Here in Philly we see at least 10 girls in the city with this look daily. It's old and tired and never looked good in the first place.

I definitely agree with most of what Joel has said; I think huge designer IT bags, especially the ones with logos all over, are incredibly trashy and make anyone carrying them look like a wannabe rich girl, I think high-waisted shorts are better left to the elementary teachers, and I think leggings are ridiculously unattractive, unless they are worn as tights under a skirt.

wow, i'm completely impressed! when i read the intro, i was like, what, im supposed to take fashion advice from joel madden, who i think can't dress himself worth anything?? but he actually had some really good comments, and i definitely have a lot more respect for the man now, even if it still doesnt change how he looks. however, i think it would have better to have him choose some outfits that he really likes, brands or trends that he likes, etc. because any reader of WWWD could point out whats wrong with those outfits above, the only thing this article did was to show that a guy can point out the problems as well. i would have liked to have seem a guy's perspective on what works well/what he likes, etc. i think that would have been more useful.

Great idea to get a guy to judge the different looks on these girls. Please whowhatweardaily.com do it more often. I like how he is stating his opinions and how he also throws in different options for whatever he didnt like. Although he did clerly diss Nicole Richie's style. Especially sicne Balenciaga bags is al she ever wears for the past 3 years. But dont worry Miss. Richie I love my Balenciaga's too :)

I totally like his honesty and how he said that he still likes all these girls even if he doesn't like all of their outfit choices, but I really don't agree with most of what he said. For almost every outfit he said, "I wish she would have showed of her body", "why are her clothes hiding everything", it's sad that most guys will only like what a girl is wearing if she's not wearing much. True, not all of the outfits were that nice. But really, why should we care so much about his opinion? He definitely does not have style and who cares what guys think, it's our opinions of ourself that matter.
