No matter if the shade is crimson, carmine, or cherry, a red mouth is a makeup statement not all readers are willing to make. We don’t want those ladies to feel left out of the beauty loop, so in honor of those who prefer a lip that’s sexy in subtle way, we suggest that you get in the mood for nude.

The minute—yet distinct—color and texture variations for nude lip products are of prime importance. While it’s possible to throw nearly every semi-natural lipstick or gloss under the nude banner, we’re really most interested in the kind that the trendsetting heads above are wearing. Their slightly glossy, medium shade, flesh-colored lips are straight from the Fall 07 runways, as seen above at Calvin Klein. The lip is also going to be huge for spring, Prada, Rag & Bone, and Zac Posen all did great takes on the look.

To achieve this look, many experts recommend covering the mouth with foundation or concealer to start, but we have found this gives us cakey, dry lips—ick. We prefer to use a creamy base, like the M.A.C. Pro Lip Erase or their Cream Colour Base in a shade like Tint or Hush icon ($16.50). You can also just use lip liner in your desired buff shade all over the mouth (this is how Jennifer Lopez does this look), and finish it off with a clear or pale peach gloss. Two great pencils to try are Chanel’s Le Crayon Levres in Nude ($28) and Max Factor High Definition Lipliner and Lipstick Brush in Nude Chair 129 ($5.39). Lipstick lovers, we’ve got a few options for you as well. Check out Honolulu Honey by NARS ($23), a flesh-toned beige shade with a little sheen, or Clinique Colour Surge Butter Shine Lipstick in Shhh ($14).
