Thanks to the fall runways and support from trendsetters like Nicole Richie, at this very moment, the beret is having its sartorial heyday. While the wool beret (not to be confused with its homespun cousin, the knit beret) is traditionally associated with artists, beatniks, and commando units (like the Green Berets), this season the head-topper was quite the hit with the fashion crowd.
The Fall 07 shows primarily showcased black or white berets (see examples of Louis Vuitton, Versace, and Ralph Lauren, above), but we think this chapeau looks quite darling in a cheery cherry, like the one Richie recently picked. Of course, one of the lovely aspects of this accessory is the fact that you could certainly buy several shades and not have buyer’s remorse. Even with the exchange rate, Topshop’s red
Felt Beret ($24.50) is still a good buy. We also dig the simple ivory
Wool Beret ($32) from Hat Attack, as well as their Scotch-tam style
Wool Beret With Pom Poms ($36).
If the affordability and accessibility aspects haven’t convinced you to get on the beret express, there are other reasons to try this look. Much like the right sunglasses or scarf, a beret has the ability to upgrade an otherwise beige outfit. It adds a certain style factor that can glam up even jeans and a t-shirt. On a more practical note, it’s also a fantastic way to hide dirty or unkempt hair. The beret is a fashion item, not just a utilitarian head-warmer, so you won’t look odd wearing one inside (as you might wearing, oh, say, one of
these
).

It doesn't really matter whether you have a skinny or fat face!As long as you have the confidence to pull the trend off, you'll look great:) I love the wool berets.

My best friend just brought back wool barets for us from her trip to Paris last year before we even knew they were "in". Too bad she lost her's and mine is pink... If only this post had come a year earlier. But this is a very cute look. A wool beret seems to pull together an entire outfit. Kudos!

What do you mean a beret is not chic, what are you on! The stereotype of a chic French girl is wearing one! I thought they were cool ever since I saw Sonia Rykiel’s winter 07 collection, I don’t just like it because this sight said its gona be a trend-reply to 'yaya'

I have never personally worn a berèt but they seem extremely versitile. Little black dress, wool winter coats, jeans, skinny's (whatever color!) or tights; they'd go with anything.. I love the one Nicole is wearing and the black. Very convienient for us girls that have to deal with super cold weather. As effective as a beenie but nowhere near as tacky!! Nicole was gorgeous at 85 lbs and she's gorgeous eight months pregnant. Be happy for the poor girl! Babies cannot live on a diet of drugs & cigarettes. Congratulate her for being healthy! Let's stop worrying about what she's eating and more about what she's wearing. Nicole has amazing style at any weight!!!!

are you serious?!?!?! how is it that berets are just now being recognized as trendy? they have been trendy for quite some time now... anyways, i love them.
Posted by: stacey | 2007-12-15 04:33:30
does anyone know where her bag is from. and it doesnt matter what is" in" and what isn't if it looks good on you and you love it thats all that matter. greey is in right now and she's not wearing a stitch of it, yet she still looks great

i love how a post on berets managed to trigger a bunch of selfrighteous girls' own body issues. it's a bloody hat my friends! why are you guys commenting about body shape? alright, if it was a post about high waisted jeans then maybe the "anerexic tramps" comment would be a little more valid since no one a pound heavier than kate moss can pull them off. besides, have a little respect PLEASE. this is a site about fashion and style, there's no need to diss the person wearing the clothes. no wonder wwwd is getting less creative and adventurous with its posts - too many readers are narrow minded and only here to have a good bitch. ps: the grey beret with the yellow bobble is adorable. i would so wear that <3

It's a sad state in Denmark! Is it me, but wwwd has lost something. The posts are (at best) uninspired. Or if you wanted to be bitch-y, tacky is the word that comes to mind. Berets?! Are you serious? This isn't new. EEee gawd or yesterdays post: ugly knock off plastic bags. It made me cringe. I haven't been back in a while and now I remember why. The fug girls are so much wittier and sassier. Get it together wwwd!

i know she's pregnant and all, but its true, i never would expect nicole richie to eat a butterfinger. weird. that being said, she looks fantastic; and i hope she keeps some of the weight on after she has the baby.

I have a charcoal grey wool beret I wear every day that I got on the street for $5. It's warm and cute. Love it! I disagree with the "common" comment, I find those sloppy knit ones that scream urban outfitters much more common. This is classic
