Go Buy Now: Faux Fur

Trends are ephemeral, which means we rarely can point to one that’s loitered around for eons. Sure, there are a few fashionable favorites—like sequin outerwear or boho braids—that manage to hang on longer than most, but typically they have a pretty short shelf life. That said, our inner history dork is truly delighted by today's topic, as the item in question has been popular in one form or another since the dawn of time. Yes, dear readers, in this installment of Go Buy Now we're focused on one of humankind's first wardrobe essentials—la fourrure! Of course, since we're modern gals, we're not actually spotlighting the real deal, oh no. Instead, we're thrilled to show you some of the best jackets and vests in fabulous faux fur!

Before we break down the best in fuzzy outerwear, we've got to tell you something: this isn't your mother's faux fur. Gone are the days of ultra-synthetic, seemingly flammable pieces that were typical of this category even a year ago. Instead, the market's full of highly touchable options, as everyone from Rebecca Taylor to Topshop is making fashion-forward, cruelty-free, truly luxurious fake fur.

If you're ready to wear one of these amazing pieces and are looking for a few style tips, just crib some notes from the always fabulously attired Kate Moss and Rachel Zoe. The two are quite different in how they wear their faux fur: Moss goes for oversized chubbies worn with leather minis and dramatic cat eyeliner (very glam, but with a devil-may-care air) while Zoe favors cozy gilets over black basics or bell-bottom jeans (totally boho sophisticate). Either way you work it, just know that a faux-fur addition will turn any outfit into a must-see look—so wallflowers, watch out!

1. Rachel Zoe Faux Fur Toggle Coat ($129, available on 10/10) in Chevron
Red-carpet fanatics and Bravo addicts alike know that Rachel Zoe is known for her sense of style and her love of dramatic fashion, so it's no surprise that her inaugural collection for QVC makes a spectacular impression. Particularly notable is her faux fur coat, which stands out due to its eye-catching zigzag print. We particularly like the topper's toggle details, as they offer a ladylike touch that contrasts nicely with the youthful nature of the coat's chevron pattern. Although we know Zoe herself is an expert when it comes to wearing fur pieces, we also can take a note from D&G's Fall 09 runway, where a similarly collared coat was thrown over a t-shirt and ankle-length tulle skirt for a sort of Degas-inspired je ne sais quoi.

2. Damselle Faux Lynx Fur Vest ($98)
While it's difficult to determine which piece is our greatest find, we can easily agree that this faux lynx coat is a show-stopping piece. The contrasting-color trim and silky lining are super chic, while the price is shockingly wallet-friendly. We picture the always polished Olivia Palermo pairing this with bold jewelry and neutral basics for a laid-back ensemble that still packs a punch!

3. Rebecca Taylor Faux Fur Jacket ($720)
Straight from Rebecca Taylor's Fall 09 show, this foxy faux-fur jacket was the centerpiece of two runway looks. For the first ensemble, the designer paired the long-haired jacket with a purple chiffon dress, resulting in an eye-catching cocktail outfit. In the second, Taylor styled this piece over a cream ruffle blouse and black tie skirt for a work-appropriate ensemble. The savage nature of the fur balances the girliness of the flirty wear, proving that while a standout coat can claim to be the hero piece of your outfit, it will also easily mesh with what you have in (or may add to!) your existing wardrobe.

4. Joie Glimmer Faux Fur Vesticon ($318)
While our other faux options can instantly add polish to your look, this all-white vest has a more renegade aesthetic thanks to its uncombed appearance. The loose fur is attractively disheveled, which could lend itself well to either dressing down a glitzy after-work outfit or adding texture to ripped skinnies and a concert tee. We imagine the insouciant Taylor Momsen incorporating the Glimmer Vest into one of her black-eyeliner-and-hiked-up hemline looks for a dose of aspiring-rockstar chic.

5. Topshop Vintage Style Faux Fur Coat ($190)
When we were little girls, we remember visiting the fancy floor of Neiman Marcus with our grandmothers and drifting toward the perfect pelts in the corner. We wished that one day we, too, could have our name embroidered on the collar of such a piece for when we went wherever our dance card would take us. Well, even though times have changed, and we'd prefer to stamp our name in the faux variety, we can still wistfully capture that childhood sensation with Topshop's Vintage Style Faux Fur Coat. The lovely swing shape is perfect for a winter wedding, and it will easily complement a floor-length frock. We recommend adding a rhinestone lapel pin to further channel the old Hollywood glamour of a screen-siren like Carole Lombard.

6. H&M Faux Fur Vest ($50)
Maybe it's just our childish excitement at Spike Jonze's newest cinematic adventure, but this thick, furry vest has us channeling the nostalgia of Where the Wild Things Are—but in a completely chic way of course! Though the gilet is cozy and oversized, the faux leather tie cinches your waist, assuring that your figure won't get lost in the fray. We could easily see someone of a more diminutive stature, like Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen, wrapping it over a floor-skimming vintage dress for a fantastic way to look red-carpet ready.—Liza Kaplan

On A Side Note
Thank you so much to everyone who came to our book signing in Chicago, we had an amazing time with all of our readers! Also, a special thanks to the divinely delightful Cynthia Rowley and Michelle Finocchi—the party was so lovely! In addition to having a fabulous time inscribing copies of Who What Wear, we also got a chance to hang out with a few of our favorite ladies from Shopbop. (Check out their blog for the behind-the-scenes scoop on our festive night out.) Next week we're headed to San Antonio...we can't wait to say hello to Texas, hope to see you there!

Thanks for posting these and promoting non-cruel fashion! Faux is awesome, it can be bad ass when clearly fake (if done right) such as a huge white shag coat. I can also be very sexy and chic when it is a good imitation Oyunlar mario Oyunları Oyun

Ok love the looks but faux fur is a petroleum product. It is really toxic to make and will never go away. You cant clean it and it burns... like you are flammable when you wear it. I use to have one and it was lovely but it broke my heart when I found out it was gonna spend an eternity a landfill. Its not biodegradable like real fur. Go to vintage stores find one you like the color of and then have it tailored. But don't but faux fur. Sorry its just gross. Hello you CANT clean it!

Numbers 2,3 and 4 are pretty great, the rest look cheesy fake. Faux is great if it looks lux but it is a huge disaster when done poorly. Get multiple opinions before rocking faux to make sure it looks mod, not muppetish. Catherine Wood Hill http://www.lagrandedame.com

i would think twice before wearing fake fur, people may liken you to a gorilla, and sing "who let the dogs out" to you.

Posted by: bombrecka |  2009-10-07 23:15:03

none of these are appealing to me. i'm probably going to upset alot of people by saying this, but if you like fur, wear fur, and if you don't like fur, then don't wear it. i don't wear fur, but i don't necessarily have anything against people who do. why would you wear something that looks like fur if it isn't? it's not nearly as warm or as attractive.

I totally love the faux fur look! I want that faux lynx jacket! I think faux fur can spruce up a casual outfit. Rachel zoe does it all that time!

More to add to my shopping laundry list! WWW is burning a hole in my J brand pockets but the wide range of price points are greatly appreciated. I am a huge Zoe fan and that tempting toggle coat will soon be mine. :) http://www.revampstyling.com/_blog/The_Style_Skinny

I've been so glad to see the immense progress made with the quality of faux fur over the last few years. You used to be able to spot a faux fur from miles away and it always looked like cheap shag carpet, but now you can find faux furs that both look and feel so real you almost can't tell any difference. I have the Rebecca Taylor (#3) one shown above which is incredible looking and a dark brownish-black Juicy Couture one from 2 years ago and everyone always assumes they're both real. Thank you for choosing to feature faux fur instead of the real thing!
