Girl of The Month

Girl of The Month: Emma Roberts

After much recent research, we’ve concluded that most young actresses seem to fall into one of two style camps: safe or sloppy. Fortunately, there are a few refreshing alternatives to this rule, like today’s subject—the perpetually polished Emma Roberts! She’s been dazzling us for ages, ever since she turned up at a Teen Vogue Young Hollywood Party wearing a polka-dotted D&G dress and the perfect pair of black patent pumps. As it turns out, the endearing ensemble was just a sign of things to come! Since then, Roberts has showcased an endless line of splendid red carpet getups and equally inspiring daywear choices. In addition to her stellar style, Roberts' acting career is blooming, too: she is the leading lady in this month's Hotel for Dogs and the upcoming Wild Child. All things considered, Roberts is definitely prime Girl of the Month material!

WhoWhatWear.com regulars will recall Miss Roberts from a handful of our daily stories (such as What They Wore: NY Fashion Week and What Was She Wearing: Answers!), but we purposefully set aside a few of her best ensembles for today! With the helping hands of the styling duo, MAUDE—otherwise known as Emily Current and Merritt Elliott—Roberts constantly dresses to perfection in colorful, fresh, and age-appropriate pieces.

One of the things we appreciate most about Roberts is her enthusiasm for trying lots of different looks. She can be playful, like in the Ruffian Graffiti Dress ($5495, 310.659.5785) and Current/Elliott Shrunken JJ Jean Jacket ($239) she wore to Intermix's 15th Anniversary Event in New York City, but is just as capable at sporting more proper attire. A case in point is the prim Couture Couture Silk Chiffon Ruffle Blouse ($800, 212.727.8029) and Embroidered Skirt ($1500, 212.727.8029) worn with Juicy Couture Mariska Shoes ($194, 212.727.8029) she displayed while at the Ritz Carlton last year.

Roberts also pulls off casual hipster look with flying colors, as she demonstrated at the Sundance Film Festival Stein Eriksen's Lounge in Park City by modeling a Ron Herman shirt, JBrand Ankle Skinny Jeans ($159), Stuart Weitzman Over-The-Knee Flat Bootsicon ($535), Phoebe Price Headband ($130, 310.550.1341), and skull scarf. And last, but not least, Roberts even does menswear well! She delighted us when she borrowed from the boys and turned up at her Hotel for Dogs premiere in a Helmut Lang Racerback Top ($80) and Cotton Tuxedo Jacket ($565, 323.951.0994), worn with Chloe Silk Shorts ($825, 800.558.1855). (Roberts' splurge of the season would be "everything from Chloe's Spring 09 Collection!") The ensemble was an unexpected and sophisticated departure from what her peers would wear and a wonderful wardrobe selection.

So just how does our spotlighted starlet conceive her style? For starters, we'd say all of her work-related traveling is definitely an influential factor to her taste. When on location in various cities, Roberts' favorite places to shop are Intermix in New York, Madison in LA, and Topshop in London. On top of that, she is "inspired by Sienna Miller's personal style, old movies, and just flipping through magazines." Roberts picks up her preferred newsstand material—Nylon, Teen Vogue, British ELLE, Australian Bazaar, and French Vogue—whenever she gets a chance. Most importantly, Roberts dresses according to her own golden rule: "Whatever you feel confident and comfortable in is what you should wear!" Wise words indeed.—Jessica Amento

shes the prettiest girl on planet, and its not all about the dress its how the dress suites her looks.. get well huh

I'm struck by how consistently uncomfortable she looks in the clothes her ham-fisted LA stylist has clearly picked out for her. I love the hilariously obvious cliched permutations of what a "stylish teen" is supposed to look like. "Edgy eye makeup and skull scarf" reads like cute, sleepy panda bear on her. She looked best in the second from left photo. "Poised white satin dress suit" aka Carrie Bradshaw Jr and "obligatoru Pucci-esque designer vintage" monstrosity of the bottom left do not suit this kid at all. And that jean jacket outfit was clearly a leftover Rachel Bilson joint the stylist had kicking around on the rolling rack that night. Get your money back from this poor-man's-Rachel-Zoe, Emma, and start picking out your own clothes.

it's really nice to finally c people of my own age dressed properly

Posted by: dina |  2009-02-05 09:27:51

is this because she has style? or because she has been talking about this website like crazy these days ... ?

Posted by: Dani |  2009-02-04 15:28:06

I admire her style. the first dress is so amazing on her!

Posted by: melmo |  2009-02-04 11:23:03

oh please! not another underfed, average-faced it-girl! don`t we have enough of them! sooo uncreative & uninspiring!

When I look at Emma, I love her style. It's inspiring, I was a little shocked to read all of these comments. In my opinion, she doesn't have to look "different" or stand out to your expectations, it's her own style and that's what makes it so great.

Posted by: Veronica |  2009-02-03 22:23:04

i am not a fan of her style but i loved watching her shows when i was younger haha.

Posted by: geri |  2009-02-03 12:42:01

I don't see anything new here

Posted by: budgetchic.org |  2009-02-03 12:30:26

I agree with Paige. What's going on, WWW? I'm a little disappointed in the posts as of late. As a (relocated) Texas girl, I count on you guys to keep me on top of my game because fashion trends reach us slower than the north... none of this is anything I haven't seen before.

Posted by: missy |  2009-02-03 12:27:07

She seems a nice person and a great actress but i hate her style.

Posted by: Camilla |  2009-02-03 12:08:53

I loveee the outfit in the center. Somehow the jean jacket works so well with that dress! Maybe I'll even start wearing my jean jacket again...

Hi, I think Emma Roberts style is so cute. She looks really good in denuim. i hope I see more articles on here about her. Did you know she regualry check this site. Its her favourite website. Its mine too. If you see this emma Roberts, i just want to tell you, that you are the best girl in the world.

Posted by: Poppy |  2009-02-03 01:07:10

Um...i can't really say anything too great about this post. Yea shes cute but i can't say her style is anything that interesting. I would love to see some girls on this site that are amazing in their profession and thier style. To name a few...natasha khan, santogold, ladygaga...yes they do break the rules, but i have a feeling thats what your readers want to see...?maybe?

Posted by: guccilily |  2009-02-03 01:03:33

Im shocked at these awful comments. Are you people all angry and unhappy?. This is a beautiful girl with adorable style. i know people like perez and E fashion police make it fashionable to criticize people but isn't fashion a form of expression and isn't kindness a virtue. Try to open your mind and and be less critical. This negativity is horrible.

Posted by: wow |  2009-02-02 21:31:04

I am thoroughly unimpressed. Why is WhoWhatWear so obsessed with her? Do they have some kind of deal with her agent because otherwise, I don't really get it. WWW even dismissed skull scarves, so I especially don't get why they would select a picture of her wearing one.

Posted by: Minh |  2009-02-02 20:26:19

She is the cutest! love her!!!!!

Posted by: milly |  2009-02-02 19:57:42

she doesn't have good style at all. not at all.

Posted by: kl |  2009-02-02 18:38:28

She's cute and I do like and respect her as a person, but I hardly see her as a fashion icon. Her style is the work of a stylist; i dont think she knows who she is yet--she is young.

Posted by: sarah |  2009-02-02 18:06:56

im somewhat disappointed, yes shes cute and dresses well for her age, but honestly, ive seen this all before. not very innovative. it just seems predictable.

Posted by: paige  |  2009-02-02 15:58:32

WOW, REALLY?

Posted by: alice |  2009-02-02 15:56:22

Really? not into her style/ outfits.

Posted by: Kris |  2009-02-02 15:04:33

I adore her outfits. Her acting? Not so much. The only reason I think she gets acting jobs would be b/c of her aunt: Julia Roberts... Plus she has a stylist who picks and puts together red-carpet outfits for her.

Posted by: Laurie  |  2009-02-02 14:47:28

I confess . . . I saw the Nancy Drew movie. So what if I was not the intended target audience, I still enjoyed all the vintage/retro ensembles that Miss Roberts donned for the movie (Anthropologie anyone?). Emma Roberts is so naturally stylish she could make a burlap sack look haute couture. Great choice for 'girl of the month' WWW!

Posted by: Lizzie |  2009-02-02 11:58:11

Love all these outfits :] That being said, I agree with Ella that you give her too much credit considering she is not self-styled. PS: more Olivia Wilde?

Posted by: aimy |  2009-02-02 11:51:39

yes, heaven forbid that we would step out of our box and look at someone who isn't our exact same age...relax.

Posted by: Leah |  2009-02-02 11:06:51

I agree with liz. Why is everyone obsessing over Miley when they really should pay attention to this girl. I think Emma would be a much better role model than someone who thinks she's much older than she really is.

Posted by: mheflick |  2009-02-02 10:57:39

Emma is cute! She's coming into her own. She looks better than all the Mileys that dress too old for their age. I think the suit was so much cooler than a boring dress for a premiere and i like that she is a real looking girl having fun with clothes.

Posted by: liz |  2009-02-02 10:11:35

She's certainly adorable, talented, and well-styled. She's also 17. On the one hand, I'm glad to see her looking young and fresh and not slutting it up. On the other hand, as a grown, professional woman I think I'm going to start looking elsewhere for more age-appropriate inspiration. This place seems more and more geared to spoiled suburban kids with mommy and daddy's credit card.

Posted by: Tracy |  2009-02-02 09:48:13

Wow I'm really suprised be in a good way I never thought she had good style I guess this proves me wrong I love her in the more tailored Chanel and white ensemble piece it is very unexpected but she looks great. Great job WWW

Posted by: Betsey |  2009-02-02 09:45:43

Very pretty and fresh but totally uninspiring. I do think she definitely has potential though, that suit is very chic.

Posted by: redpoint |  2009-02-02 09:36:11

LOVE HER !!

Posted by: lolia |  2009-02-02 09:31:54

I find many of you to be very mean and critical of WWW. Seriously, chill out and stop complaining about how "boring" their posts are. It is REALLY annoying. No one cares if you are bored.

Posted by: Sam |  2009-02-02 09:24:01

She is adorable. I loved that suit since i saw it on insyle.com. She has a laid back look and always looks effortless.

Posted by: ppl |  2009-02-02 09:00:11

Didn't you already do a boring post on her? I agree with fashionlover - probably getting to old for this site. And, I'm sure its no coincidence that your featuring her when she has two movies being promoted. Looks like WWW is being influenced by the Hollywood machine. Seems to happen to everyone at some point!

Posted by: Llew |  2009-02-02 08:12:38

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't she like... 15 years old..?! Maybe I'm getting too old for this site.

Posted by: fashi0nlover |  2009-02-02 07:35:32

i love herrrrrrrrrrr, she's gorgeous!

Posted by: hannahhhh |  2009-02-02 06:39:59

Do not like her, she is not original at all. The shorts in pic no. 5 has already been worn bo Kate Bosworth, who matched them in a much better way. Also that Ruffian dress looks cheap. Boring, extremly boring...

Posted by: vanessa |  2009-02-02 06:08:28

oohhh woww. i can only imagine the ranting that is about to occur about this post. emma roberts? cmon.. the work of rachel zoe is getting a tad tiring.

Posted by: ronnie |  2009-02-02 06:05:28

Finally! I love Emma Roberts! I agree that she tries lots of things and strikes a balance between polished and cool as. Even if she is helped a little by a stylist I'm sure she has her own input and that doesnt take away from the fact she looks so good. I find her inspiring..

Posted by: charlotte |  2009-02-02 04:00:23

I must say I am a little disappointed in this post. Not only is her style not very original, but you mentioned she obviously is styled by others. Not very inspiring, at all.
