Girl of The Month

Girl of The Month: Dree Hemingway

Though you might not know it at first glance, Dree Hemingway is the female equivalent of a speeding bullet. That's right, our latest Girl of the Month is off like a shot and quickly becoming the next new name on everyone's lips. The former ballerina-turned-model's ultra-quick ascent can be attributed to a number of factors—such as her extreme beauty and intriguing pedigree (her great-grandpa is Ernest, mom is Mariel)—but at WhoWhatWear.com, we’re just wild about her excellent personal style.

If you need proof of Hemingway's swift rise, we'd like to offer the following tidbit for your consideration. In the past month alone, she's popped up in the most important glossies around, appearing in the March ELLE as a part of a story on Alexander Wang, as the sole subject of Vogue's back of the book Index: Checklist, and featured in a Craig McDean-photographed fashion editorial for Interview.

Plus, this darling girl—all coltish limbs and incredibly healthy hair—was the star of Halston's fall collection. In lieu of a traditional runway show, this season Halston created a short web video of the various autumnal looks and features Hemingway running (with a grande jeté or two) down a Manhattan street. It's an unusual and fresh presentation, and definitely worth watching. All that said, perhaps the most compelling development in Hemingway's career is the fact that she's been anointed by none other than Riccardo Tisci. On this coming Sunday, Hemmingway will make her Fall 09 runway debut at Givenchy, where she's booked exclusively for this fashion season. Exciting stuff!

Aside from all these interesting developments, what intrigues us about Hemingway is her thoroughly cool style and personality. She cites Edie Sedgewick in Ciao Manhattan as a wardrobe influence and confesses to being addicted to the incomparable website, JakandJil.com. (As a bona fide shoe hound, Hemingway appreciates Jak & Jil founder Tommy Ton's footwear-photographing proclivities.) Like most girls, our GOTM is mad about Alexander Wang and waxes enthusiastic about his new shoe line, particularly his Alexis Fringe Boots ($595) and Carrington Perforated Boots ($575, Kirna Zabete: 212.941.9656). When asked about her favorite designers, the list was emblematic of her taste level and named all the usual chic suspects: Balenciaga, Rick Owens, Givenchy, Lanvin, and Balmain.

We couldn't tell you how Hemingway developed such super-stylish sensibilities, but we do know that her wardrobe preferences tend to be quite Parisian in nature—with a dash of California casual thrown in for good measure. For example, at a recent party for Los Angeles Confidential magazine (far left image), Hemingway wore a vintage plaid shirt unbuttoned over Agent Provocateur's Gangster Bra ($170), and a pair of J Brand Cigarette Jeans ($159) tucked into Miu Miu boots. The bralette is very current (see: Alexander Wang, Prada) while the oversized button-down is a classic choice. Regarding the latter, CP Shades' Marissa Plaid Shirt ($150) is a smart, in-stock version of Hemingway's top.

This ability to blend the timeless with the timely shows up again and again in Hemingway's outfit selections. At the New York City Ballet's opening night party (second from left), the model combined a slightly sheer, yet modestly cut, Patrick Rzepski dress with a tailored Zara blazer. Wisely, she added a kinky pair of A.F. Vandevorst triple-strap heels to sex the whole look up. You can create your own version of this look with Elizabeth and James' Strapless Lingerie Dress ($375), as well as either Report Signature's Dita Heels ($195) or Christin Michaels' Rena Heels ($114).

Additionally, we adore Hemingway’s fondness for a black, white, and gray color palette: it’s simple, stark, and sophisticated. The oversized Alexander Wang Herringbone Jacket ($486.50, on sale) she wore to the MCM boutique opening (center image) was a chic backdrop for her cherry red patent MCM clutch (Mulberry’s Long Locked Purse ($292) is a good alternative). A little hit of red also enlivened an outfit she wore while in Sundance (second from right). The bright orange-red lipstick dressed up a Raquel Allegra Shredded Tank ($198), Ksubi Slim Straight Jeans ($215), Humanoid cardigan, and Lanvin flats. Hemingway’s final look required no such pop of color; it’s flawless just the way it is. The model wore a head-to-toe Calvin Klein Collection ensemble to the Fall 08 show last month, which was just the icing on the impeccable cake!

I'm from England and i've never heard of her but very, very good style! She dresses her age and doesn't look like a fashion victim.

Dree is an incredibly nice person. I met her a few months ago and she left a great impression. Pleasantly surprised to see her here and happy she's experiencing this new success - the Givenchy news is amazing.

There's nothing new or innovative here *shrug*. Sometimes the whole "effortless" thing is overrated and kinda of a cope out to those with uber derivative style.

Love her style so cute and effortless. Really like her blazers and Chanel bag! http://www.lovellegirl.blogspot.com/
