Girl Of The Month

Girl Of The Month: Alice Dellal

We’ve been keeping tabs on Alice Dellal for quite some time now, admiring her cutting-edge hairstyle and commitment to grunge-inspired outfits from afar. The young heiress/model possesses a signature style (partially shaved head, predilection for beat-up leather jackets, smudged charcoal eyeliner) that is refreshingly uncommon—especially in comparison to typical red carpet polish we see all the time. It’s rare to find someone in the public eye with such a daring fashion perspective, so we commend Dellal for her risky looks and are certain that you’ll find her an inspiring Girl of the Month.

Dellal’s personal taste alone warrants the spotlight treatment, but recent developments in her budding career cemented her one-to-watch status. As the granddaughter of a British real-estate mogul, Jack Dellal, and daughter of a Brazilian model, Andrea Dellal, it’s clear the young Alice was blessed with good fortune. She’s been living up to genetic expectations thus far, and has already been photographed by her godfather, the esteemed fashion photographer Mario Testino, for Paris Vogue, walked the runway for Vivienne Westwood’s F/W 08 show, and is rumored to be the new face/form for Agent Provocateur. Though no official statement has been released, word on the street is that she completed a racy new campaign with AP to be released this fall. If this isn’t proof enough, consider the following: the brilliant Alexander Wang is “obsessed” with Dellal and used her in the campaign for his collaboration with Uniqlo.

Considering the way she’s been anointed by some of the world’s key tastemakers, it’s clear the fashion world is enthusiastic about Dellal. No doubt this is in part due to her idiosyncratic look and wardrobe. The way she puts herself together—flannel top peeking out from a leather jacket, punky jewelry pieces, hardcore combat boots—results in a Janet Livermore from Singles/Seattle plaid/early nineties cornucopia that, oddly enough, feels very genuine. While Dellal has this distinctly tomboyish side, she also brings a subversive sexuality to her outfits via barely-there patterned black stockings, blonde Botticelli curls, and skyscraper heels. The play of slacker-rocker against pin-up vixen is decidedly interesting to watch, especially because it’s so fundamentally offbeat and personal. What can we say—we’re officially captivated! —Jessica Amento

Alice Options
We collected a handful of appropriate wardrobe pieces to help you emulate Dellal’s malice in wonderland style.

1. Mike & Chris Nolan Biker Leather Jacket ($915)
Our hunt for the perfect Dellalian leather jacket brought us to this divine style by Mike & Chris. We think that the cropped length and asymmetrical zipper would hold mighty appeal for Ms. Alice.

2. ASOS Leather Biker Jacket ($184)
ASOS’s leather jacket has a completely different look and price point, but is still in the spirit of our GOTM. If you’d prefer a little leather jacket with lots of zippers and a vintage-style aged look, this one’s for you!

3. Kettle Black Long Sleeve Flannel Dress ($115)
We suggest pairing this dress with some patterned or ripped tights and a hot pair of lace-up boots.

4. Cassette Sioux Tee ($77)
Dress up this burnout t-shirt by wearing it with an oversized blazer and bandage skirt. You’ll get bonus Alice points if you wear it with some sort of stomper boot.

5. Betsey Johnson Victoriana Tights ($25)
Much like the lace tights we featured in W.W.W.D. Tips earlier this week, these Swiss-patterned stockings by the one-of-a-kind Betsey Johnson are ahead of the trend.

6. Shimamura Paris & Co. Round Pyramid Bracelet ($145)
Dellal doesn’t always wear lots of jewelry, but she does seem to have a soft spot for tough-looking wrist accoutrement. Available in either black leather or black patent, this simple studded bracelet would be the perfect finishing touch for any ensemble.

7. SURevolution Small Studded Bangles ($25)
We could easily imagine Dellal mixing a handful of these stellar skinny bangles with other bracelets

8. Zinc Pennie Mary Janes ($93)
Dellal would snatch up these platform mary janes in a heartbeat, and then pair them with some leather pants or jean cutoffs.

love the outfit on the far right and she's one beautiful girl but i agree with others who think her style comes off as forced. it's quite literal, isn't it? it's the same thing with agyness...very contrived.

Posted by: pillie pitzer |  2008-06-29 02:26:56

hey style is definitely different, but in a good way. hey grunge/punk/rock style makes her stand out. i like her the best in the two pictures on the right, she looks expecially cute in the little red dress

Posted by: zoe! |  2008-06-26 07:44:34

to stephanie: i understand your point to an extent especially since this is mainly an american site rather than an international one but this site should feature her because she is the next big thing, shes just about to pop. at least in london she is a big thing. as to whether she is commercial or not if british vogue can feature her, i think wwwd can too.

Posted by: roze |  2008-06-26 03:09:00

To Kat: No, what i meant by classy punk was choosing a few elements of punk dress e.g. studded heels and incorporating them into an outfit rather than wearing every punk item at once. but you obviously wouldn't understand that...

Posted by: Loren |  2008-06-24 02:56:24

i love it where i live a lot of the fashion forward girls dress that way. i think it looks wicked

Posted by: pink |  2008-06-24 01:56:28

to roze: just because vivienne westwood likes her hair it doesn't make her look commercial. it's a source of inspiration to the designers, not to the commercial buyer. Some people don't understand this look because it's what the designers get inspired from. Unless you think outside of the box and are a creative interpreter you most likely wouldn't understand this (80-90% of the readers below). I personally don't think WWWD should have posted this because most of the readers wouldn't understand a girl like her.

Posted by: stephanie |  2008-06-23 23:44:54

I guess I wasn't being punked. WWWD is serious about this tacky chick. She looks a Boiling, Hot Mess!

Posted by: mochababe73 |  2008-06-23 20:06:54

oh my, they are some real 'anger management' issues in here, some have even resorted to shouting and swearing...is this the local pub at 2am, grow up girlies. x

Posted by: sarah  |  2008-06-23 17:05:22

"it’s rare to find someone in the public eye with such a daring fashion perspective.." no, really? i wonder why. trash x 10.

Posted by: meme |  2008-06-23 14:13:40

i'm not sure why this is such a big deal. her style is very derivative, it's all been done before. i, and many others, had hair and outfits like hers in the 90s. i really hope the 90s is not going to be the next decade to emulate. it wasn't all that long ago. she's not all that different from agyness deyn, who copies every awful fashion choice i made in the 80s and everyone calls it different and cutting edge, which i find to be hilarious.

Posted by: erika |  2008-06-23 12:44:49

Sorry WWWD, but your "emperor" is totally naked -- eeeek!

Posted by: Lizzie |  2008-06-23 11:38:16

To Loren : Seriously? Classy punk? Where did that come from? Is it like saying "Avril" or "Ashlee" "punk"?????LOL

Posted by: kat |  2008-06-23 06:35:25

I would love to see what miss Power and miss Kerr have to say bout all this LMAO! myohmygirl.blogspot.com

Posted by: myohmy |  2008-06-23 02:37:15

.... I don't understand all of this controversy at ALL. She's beautiful and sylishly edgy... original yet also shares a growing and recently familiar desire to experiment with grunge. I mean, whoever said "give me back the olsen twins"... I feel as though she embodies the same wonderful wrecklessness that they do with their fashion choices. I admire her hair ALOT. Her style is really great, especially in the last three pictures. I just don't understand how so many people could feel so strongly against her?

Posted by: nicole |  2008-06-22 22:00:41

i don't even know why wwwd has a commenting function...the only purpose it serves is to let jealous bitches moan and groan. alice is HOT HOT HOT but i guess idiots who are still wearing skinny jeans and ballet flats and calling that "style" wouldn't comprehend a marvelous inspiration like dellal. f*uck off back to forever 21 and leave fashion to the fashionable.

Posted by: cmk |  2008-06-22 16:21:31

OKAY. NO.1: WWWD NOT ONLY AGREES ALICE HAS STYLE. BRITISH VOGUE DOES TOO. ITS CALLED VARIETY. NO. 2. HER STYLE HAS ELEMENTS OF BIKER/GRUNGE/GOTH/PUNK WHICH MOST OF YOU FIND REPULSIVE AND PEOPLE IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY FIND INTERESTING AND INVENTIVE AND MORE IMPORTANTLY STYLISH. NO.3 IF YOU THINK HER HAIR IS FOUL, THAT IS REALLY FUNNY BECAUSE PARIS VOGUE, BRIT VOGUE, TATLER, AGENT PROVACATEUR, V.WESTWOOD, MARIO TESTINO ETC ETC LOVE HER AND HER HAIR! READ THE ARTICLE! AND THEN MAKE A TRIP TO LONDON AND SEE SOME BRITISH YOUTH CULTURE! SHE HAS HAD THINGS WITH PIERRE CASIRAGHI AND JAMES JAGGER? JEALOUS??????????????????

Posted by: roze |  2008-06-22 09:36:06

There's doing punk right, and then there's getting it completely wrong. Unfortunately, in my opinion, alice falls into the latter category. She looks like she bought all her gear at a dodgy emo store, ripped it up and then rubbed it in dirt. Oh, and she didn't shower for three days before any photo opportunity. Someone needs to teach her how to do classy punk, seriously, alice, go get a stylist!

Posted by: Loren |  2008-06-22 06:12:35

I love Alice! It's nice to see her featured on here instead of the usual, safe, boring girls.

Posted by: Aimi |  2008-06-22 02:22:28

i don't know who the hell this chick is, but she's gnarly as they come.

Posted by: jess |  2008-06-21 18:23:06

despite what others said about her not giving a fuck, OBVIOUSLY she does if she is so vain to be pictured so often in the media.

Posted by: revolttt |  2008-06-21 06:29:59

it's really surprising to me that you think this girl has style...she looks like a crack whore, i guess that's what you guys think looks good. personally i hope no one looks to her for inspiration.

Posted by: sara |  2008-06-21 00:37:38

MOTHER FATHER!are you kidding me?? seriously, alice whatsherface homeless looking girl?? is GOTM?? wake up wwwd!!

Posted by: POLLY |  2008-06-21 00:36:17

WTF was that?? Seriously, that post was ridunculous (and I do mean RIDUNCULOUS)....I'll take Nicole Richie and the Olsen twins any day--please bring them back!

Posted by: meg |  2008-06-21 00:26:02

She's the girl that's looking to be the source of inspiration, not the trend setter. www.thefashionaddiction.blogspot.com

Trailor Trash Cool ... I personally wouldn't grunge out this much .. but she's different and she obviously doesn't give a fuck what anyone thinks.

Aitch... u have a point but this is fashion were talking about! I mean shes just tacky... period, and im not a bit jealous nor confused, like i said in the other post, theres a very thin line between "trendsetting" and tacky and shes crossing it... lmao

Posted by: Vikky |  2008-06-20 21:11:18

Am I being punked?

Posted by: mochababe73 |  2008-06-20 20:57:36

this is like the ultimate how to on how to dress look dirty outdated and poor

Posted by: revolttt |  2008-06-20 20:48:26

Alice Dellal was pretty alright in that NYLON spread with her in it. I mean, hey, she's just working what she has. It's not like I look perfect everyday or any day for that matter. And I commend her for wearing whatever she wants, and she manages to look pretty decent. You know you've picked a fabulous girl of the month when it gets people to comment about how much they can't stand her or her style. Because you know, jealous inspires hatred which inspires lack of understanding and outright elitism.

Posted by: Aitch |  2008-06-20 20:26:19

I really adore Alice's style and WWWD. I think all you other crazies need to calm down, and if you don't like the post, no one cares so be quiet and don't insult the site. WWWD more than satisfies many people I know and is one of the only blogs I can stand. Complete respect. Good job WWWD keep doing what you want... cause it is definitly working.

Posted by: sarah  |  2008-06-20 20:15:42

im luvenn her style!! its veryyy unique and the shaved head suites her and she pulls it off well! she can be classyyy or rockerish and stil look nice!

Posted by: ShOnii |  2008-06-20 20:13:24

What a hot mess.

Posted by: Christian Siria |  2008-06-20 19:53:30

I absolutely agree with chloe - can any of you envision Miss Katherine Power shaving one side of her head? It feels a little false that she's commending it as "refreshing" -- it looks more like the kid has a skin condition. I am with the WWWD girls when it comes to "pretty," but when they delve into "edgy" they often miss the mark. This time WWWD has jumped on the bandwagon of the "world's key tastemakers," who are more than likely BFFs with her rich mommy and daddy.

Posted by: MEP |  2008-06-20 19:27:57

taryn, is there something wrong with being 50 if you have taste? I didn't realise fashion was the domain of the young only. oh dear i must tell marc jacobs, oh and nathalie massenet, oh yeah and stella mccartney... so here's a nod to all you teens...the only reason this girls looks ANY good is because she is young. when she grows up, this won't look so cute, will it. but i guess it takes a little maturity to understand that. x

Posted by: sarah  |  2008-06-20 19:22:41

How old is this girl...she looks like she is 17, but she has a drink in her hand?

Posted by: S |  2008-06-20 18:20:00

I guess it takes a lot of money to look this cheap. She looks like a groupie from some bad 80's hair band, or everyone trying to be cool circa 1993. I'm over the whole my outfit is so horrible that it's chic dynamic...boring.

Posted by: brie |  2008-06-20 17:43:12

she is also harley viera newton's cousin (one of wwwd's myspace muses) guess fashion runs in the family.

Posted by: Celestine |  2008-06-20 17:01:54

i see what youre saying, but a lot of the posts have been really great lately/received positive reader feedback. i'll keep faithfully reading this site until the day they feature heidi montag lol

Posted by: kiki |  2008-06-20 16:48:44

i think she is amazing. unique and charming and personal style. beautiful hair and body. worthy of gotm.

Posted by: a b |  2008-06-20 16:48:04

To Kiki - I didn't say this site is trying too hard - I think they're spreading themselves thin and trying to be everything to everyone. Out of the nearly 50 posts maybe 2 or 3 people like this look. People have the same reaction to Agyness. This isn't a personal blog - it's a business. They need to take people's comments to heart or they will lose viewers. It seems every week there are more and more comments about people losing interest in WWWD. I know I am.

Posted by: Chloe |  2008-06-20 16:35:27

You guys all must be like 50 years old, this girl has awesome style! Keep in mind, these pictures are all from events so she is dressing a bit more dramatic right? Well as an 18 year old, I love her clothes and would have a good time raiding her closet. What's wrong with alternative?

Posted by: Taryn |  2008-06-20 16:19:06

Love her! bring on the diversity. Punk as F***!!

Posted by: minos magnan |  2008-06-20 15:51:13

the last GOTM was Zoe

Posted by: Jessy |  2008-06-20 15:35:46

I am by no means a girly girl, but this is taking it a bit far for my taste. I agree with everyone else, this kind of grunge look isn't original anymore. I like the red dress and that's about it.

Posted by: Amy |  2008-06-20 15:14:09

uhhhhh, no. God awful.

Posted by: Danielle |  2008-06-20 15:08:56

YUCK!!!Bring back Clemence..or at least someone with taste. worst post ever.

Posted by: claire |  2008-06-20 14:50:48

Damn WWWD, the last GOTM was the always sophisticated and chic Clémence Poésy, and now you give us this? Definite DOWNGRADE. That is all I have to say. This post is not even worth commenting on.

Posted by: bella vita |  2008-06-20 14:37:47

Not hot and definitely in need of something done to that hair!! I don't catch the drift on the fascination with her nor with Agyness, though I know that most girls who can dress do spend a lot of time thinking of what to wear, these outfits are really trying to hard. It's not punk, it's not rock n' roll. It's plain rebellious without a cause. Without the coolness of it.

Posted by: Maia |  2008-06-20 13:43:02

Her style is quite disgusting.

Posted by: Nina |  2008-06-20 13:31:58

She's a hot mess! she's dating Charlotte casiraghi's brother, she could use some serious advice from her.

Posted by: Ana Solano |  2008-06-20 13:28:32

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0bMp90t2D6bbg/340x.jpg look how beautiful and clean she looks in this chic dress. she is gross and your typical "grunge" girl. i love the olsens but i wont go farther then them in the grunge style.

Posted by: Mary |  2008-06-20 13:24:43

i disagree chloe, i dont think they are trying too hard--just offering some versatility since im sure there are people that read this with all kinds of different styles. still not crazy about this girl, though, but some people seem to be. here's looking to Monday's story.

Posted by: kiki |  2008-06-20 13:20:38

For the past few months I have deleted most of the emails from WWWD because I feel like it has gone in the wrong direction. Now i'm convinced. I'm sure this girl is cute and all but as far as "style" she doesn't have one. I don't need to elaborate because it seems that every one else has.

Posted by: Marlove |  2008-06-20 13:20:18

Alison--her red dress is Issa's Lucky dress

Posted by: LovesGemma |  2008-06-20 13:02:56

I think WWWD is having an identity crisis. I'm all for celebrating a variety of styles and looks, but this girl's style doesn't really fit with the aesthetic of their target audience. People wanting to emulate this look (or Agyness - another inexplicable person frequently featured on this site) aren't going to take advice from two cutesy blondes helping you find a cute sundress to your summer BBQ. This site is trying too hard to be everything to everyone

Posted by: chloe |  2008-06-20 12:56:20

I enjoy the 2nd and 4th outfits... The rest make her seem like a poor man's version of an Olsen twin. Oh, and that hairstyle was definitely cutting-edge: in 1987.

Posted by: little miss jen |  2008-06-20 12:44:06

ewwww why is she in here? i read her nylon interview in the it girl issue (you know, the one with cory kennedy and taylor warren on the cover), and she seemed so mean. she basically backtalked everything nylon asked her and at the end she said "oh yeah, your questions were rubbish". now does that seem like a good girl of the month to you? nooo.

Posted by: hoverboarder123 |  2008-06-20 12:25:19

No thanks! As everyone seems to agree, this wardrobe is one trashy '90s costume after another. I have never heard of this woman, and I can't imagine her having any important impact on the world dressed like this. Also, cutting edge hair? It's the same bad perm I saw all over my middle school, with a shaved patch that Mozilla Founder Mitchell Baker has been sporting for years (with a sense of humor more than a fashion statement).

Posted by: Raven Avery |  2008-06-20 12:15:32

schmeh. she was in the UK lingerie line Pussy Glamore's last ad campaign.

Posted by: Runaway Gallery |  2008-06-20 12:15:00

why in the world would you "keep tabs" on this girl. she looks so trashy and seems like she's trying to be. and "cutting-edge hairstyle"? you have go to be kidding, it looks like she hasn't done anything to it in years

Posted by: serena |  2008-06-20 12:03:20

"cutting edge hairstyle"?? looks like she hasn't had a hairstyle in a decade and I think if I tried to look like this people would be handing me money for a sandwich. Not a trendsetter at all...she's not edgy in the slightest.

Posted by: wick |  2008-06-20 11:24:33

The 2nd outfit is hottt!

Posted by: michelle |  2008-06-20 11:23:43

hmmm i feel like im looking at pictures from the nineties....

Posted by: summer b. |  2008-06-20 10:57:03

I'd actually never heard of Alice before this post, and I am definitely NOT IMPRESSED. She looks trashy in every one of the frames, especially the far left (look at the shoes!) What were you thinking! I look at these pictures and wonder how anyone with even the slightest bit of fashion sense could celebrate this disaster.

Posted by: MaryKate |  2008-06-20 10:50:30

NOT IMPRESSED. in the middle picture she looks like one of those euro streetwalkers with acid wash cut offs that show half their ass.

Posted by: leah |  2008-06-20 10:06:15

Yuck. And thankfully, I've missed all the hype that ZIZI refers to. Seriously, there's been hype about this girl?

Posted by: meg |  2008-06-20 09:44:10

Gross. I only clicked the link to find out who she is "the daughter of." Hilarious what an unlimited trust fund and a line of coke can lead some people to do. She looks like the lead singer of Dead or Alive -- you spin me right round, baby, right round, like a record baby...

Posted by: MEP |  2008-06-20 09:15:54

Anyone know where the red dress is from? (Not the Forever 21 version mentioned by Vicky)

Posted by: alison |  2008-06-20 09:14:42

I like the red dress and I like the leather jacket(not the one on the end) and that's about it.

Posted by: Champagne |  2008-06-20 08:50:32

This is the first GOTM that I do not like. I do heart the leather pants outfit, but her hair ruins all her looks...it's greasy and stringy with bad roots...trashy. The red dress is nice, but it looks like something I could have bought from Forever 21 here in St. Louis.

Posted by: Vicky |  2008-06-20 08:38:01

Arrrrrghhhh!!!This is a really awful type of "i-am-so-edgy-and -fashinable-item"girl!!!No girl of the month!!!!!

Posted by: lolita |  2008-06-20 07:27:06

ps. if you just saw her in that red dress and then found out she was a heiress (without seeing her personal preference of style beforehand), wouldnt you think, "oh another rich blonde paris?"

Posted by: laz |  2008-06-20 06:51:17

ok, sure it does look like she is trying a little too hard but lets face it, if you were in the public eye, you yourself would overthink your outfits as well.

Posted by: laz |  2008-06-20 06:48:12

she looks perfect. i love her.

Posted by: cordelia |  2008-06-20 05:52:44

What's wrong with looking classic and polished on the red carpet? When did looking attractive go out of style? I'm so tired of this whole grungy hipster look. It's not even original anymore.

Posted by: lola |  2008-06-20 05:02:12

Her hair is equal parts Veronica Lake and Sinead O'Connor. I don't know if that's a good thing or not. She's not pin up at all, but she channels the 80's quite well. Too bad I'm not a big fan of the 80's.

Posted by: Val |  2008-06-20 02:56:32

im so sick of the hype surrounding this girl. i think she is attractive but i don't think she pulls off this look at all. Its a mix of confused teen angst that comes acoss totally forced.

Posted by: zizi farah |  2008-06-20 02:54:56

i love the way all heiresses these days are "models" too. the red dress is gorgeous. love the rest too.

Posted by: penny |  2008-06-20 02:50:42

in my film class we're studying punk cinema and this fits in perfectly. i LOVE the last outfit. if you like this look check out the movie Smithereens. also i'd kill for a rick owens jacket like that. fashioninsiderguide.com
