Beauty Board: Budget Buys

In honor of New Year's Eve and the fresh start that arrives tomorrow, we decided to create a story that’s an ode to one of our 2009 resolutions. Yes, dear readers, along with being more patient with our loved ones (boyfriends, we’re talking about you) and implementing a no-wine-before-5 p.m. rule, we’re going to overhaul our beauty routines.

Unfortunately, we’re already feeling the post-holiday pinch, so we decided to start the “refreshing” process in an ultra thrifty manner. With some guidance from one of our favorite makeup artists—the ultra talented Kayleen McAdams (check out her past episodes of Who What Wear TV to see her in action)—we found the most amazing and affordable beauty products around. These items have all been tried, tested, and given two thumbs up from McAdams and our WhoWhatWear.com editors. Not only are they great products, they also meet our restrictive resolution’s budgetary requirements (read: cheap thrills!).

Eyes
Revlon ColorStay Liquid Eye Pen ($8.99, in drugstores)
Marker-style eyeliner pens have been all the rage for a few seasons, but this new version from Revlon impressed us tremendously. “Sometimes these types of liners doesn’t go on smoothly or evenly, but this one works very well,” McAdams says. “The pigment is really dark and the liner stays exactly where you put it.” Best of all, it has a very fine point that makes it totally easy to use. It’s the perfect product for creating a cat-eye look, a style that just so happened to be back on the runways for Spring 09.

(If you much prefer pencil liner, try Max Factor MAXeye Liner Eyelinericon in Fresh Coffee ($4.90). McAdams raved about its beautiful dark chocolate brown color and excellent consistency (it’s neither too hard, nor too soft), and likes the fact that doesn’t require sharpening!)

Maybelline Lash Discovery Washable Mascaraicon ($6.25)
You’ll notice that there are two mascaras spotlighted in today’s story, one of which is Maybelline’s Lash Discovery Washable Mascara, which is ideal for lash-detail work. McAdams loves its teeny tiny brush, which is the perfect size for getting the lower lashes and the little ones in the inner and outer corners of the eye. (We personally use the waterproof version for all our lower lash mascara needs!)

Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencilicon ($4.94)
At first, we were a little nervous about this super skinny brow pencil, but McAdams assured us that the product’s svelte shape could really help amateurs (selves included) achieve the perfect look. “The reason I love this product is because it forces you to use the right technique,” McAdams says. “Because it’s so thin, you have to make tiny little feathery strokes, which is the key to getting a very natural look.” The built-in comb is also a nice addition, as it ensures that you won’t have brows full of excess product, therefore saving you from the dreaded “caterpillar” look.

Maybelline The Colossal Volum' Express Mascaraicon ($5.39)
If you’re looking for a great budget-friendly version of DiorShow mascara, look no further than the Maybelline aisle at your local drugstore. That’s right, dear readers, the beauty brand’s The Colossal Volum’Express will give you exceptionally full and lush lashes that are practically on par with the amazing designer version. McAdams approved of the fat brush and noted that it has better pigment than most drugstore mascaras, which often end up looking gray, not really black. “I also appreciate the fact that the consistency is a little wetter than most,” she says. “It’s a good thing, because it will make your lashes look shiny.”

L'Oreal HIP Metallic Shadow Duoicon ($7)
In the eye shadow department, there was one super standout winner—L’Oreal’s HIP Metallic Duos. McAdams praised how blendable the colors are, noting that it will work for both the demure and the adventurous user. Like the luxury version from Stila, these shadows can be used wet or dry (they work particularly well as a liner), so you can get loads of looks for one price.

Face
Maybelline Dream Mousse Blushicon ($6.38)
We knew that McAdams loves a cream blush (she usually uses MAC Pro Crème Blush, Stila Convertible Color, or NARS The Multiple), so we weren’t surprised she liked this mousse version from Maybelline. Her favorite hue was Pink Frosting, which was chosen because it’s a true pink, not muted like most. “It gives you a really pretty, natural, rosy effect,” she says. “And it has just a tiny bit of gold shimmer in it, which reminds me a bit of the NARS blush, Orgasm.” In short: if you’re looking for a blendable pinky blush, this is your product.

L'Oreal Visible Lift Under Eye Line-Minimizing & Tone-Enhancing Concealericon ($11.95)
There weren’t many skin products that passed all of our specifications, but this clickable brush formula for L’Oreal made the list. McAdams liked the built-in brush, as it makes for foolproof application (even for concealer rubes, like us) and we adored the de-puffing formula. Yup, you read that right, the Visible Lift minimizes puffy lower lids after just a couple of weeks of use!

Lips
Max Factor MAXalicious Lipglossicon ($4.89)
There were a number of runners-up in the best gloss category—L’Oreal Color Juice Sheer Juicy Lip Gloss and CoverGirl Wetslicks reminded us of Lancome’s Juicy Tubes, while Revlon Super Lustrious Lipgloss had a very Chanel-like vibe—but the victor is Max Factor’s MAXalicious! “All the colors are really great, because they’re sheer but still have enough color,” McAdams says. “You could wear it alone for a natural look, but they’re also great on top of lipsticks.” We couldn’t agree more, as we’re currently sporting this gloss (in the shade Too Much Wine) lover a cherry lip stain at this very moment!

CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain Lip Coloricon ($7.49)
Also not to be missed: CoverGirl’s new long-lasting lipstain! These plump pens are available in 10 different long-lasting hues, including Plum Pout and Wild Berry Wink (our favorites). McAdams was impressed by the very pretty bright colors and also appreciated how easy this one is to apply. The Sharpee-like tip makes for easy lining and definition, something we definitely appreciate in a lipstain applicator!

(Another product that got big raves is Revlon’s brand new Matte Lipstick ($7.99) which will be available in drugstores nationwide this January. McAdams flipped over their perfect texture and colors like Strawberry Suede, which is “perfectly named: it’s the ideal blend of pink and red,” she says.)

Nails
Revlon Nail Enamelicon ($4.99)
Our last guilt-free indulgence? The beautifully bold shades of nail enamel from Revlon. McAdams went wild for the matte Spring 09 colors like Tropical Temptation and Plum Seduction and very much appreciated their sparkle-free formulas. “They give your nails a retro, period effect, but in modern hues!” she says. Until those exact new formulas hit stores this spring, check out the above-pictured (and totally non-shimmery) Craving Coral and Fuschia Fever ($4.99 each) for a bright pop of polish.

When talking about 'thriftiness," I already have long eyelashes but I love using mascara that accentuates them. I used to run to Sephora on a monthly basis to buy Fiberwig mascara, and I swear its God sent. Unfortunately, paying $20 for a tube of mascara was and still is slightly out of my budget. I have been fooled by advertisements before so I was slightly ambivalent about L'OREAL's double extend mascara but decided to try it. I'm still a huge fan of Fiberwig but now I really recommend L'OREAL'S double extend. Its half the price and doesn't dry out as quickly! Try it and tell me what you think.

I definitely agree with MEP! When I first saw an advertisement for Cover Girl Lip Stain, I went out and bought a couple of covers immediately (sometimes the shade of the color isn't what it always appears upon use). Now I just think that the magazine provided me with some false advertisement. The stain seemed to dry out my lips quite quickly and after a few hours, I felt as though I had to keep reapplying. I hope it works for others unlike in my case.

the cover girl lip stain is amazing. being a huge fan of stains i was very impressed at the wide range of colors to choose from. i got so giddy over this fact...and the low low price point..that i got four colors!

I bought the CoverGirl Outlast Lip Stain marker to wear for New Year's and I was super disappointed. It definitely applies and wears well but the Wild Berry Wink is a DISASTROUS shade of bright, clownish fuschia. I thought the color would be a subtle wash but you might as well grab a bright pink Sharpie and color in your lips with it.

Wow... Kayleen TOTALLY has Robert Pattinson hair! Well, before it was all chopped off I mean. :/

I went downstairs to cvs and picked up that blush. It sounded like something I've been looking for. I ususally wear Nars blush. I have to say...this stuff is REALLY GOOD! The texture has nice blendability and the color is really pretty!

This is fantastic! I love posts like this! I have really really missed you guys doing beauty boards regularly the way that you used to when you first started WWW. It doesn't matter if its using drugstore or more expensive brands or both, any beauty posts, especially ones with Kayleen, just please do them more often like you used to! Some of my all time favorite posts you guys have done are beauty boards. One of the things I have missed most about you doing the beauty boards regularly are the ones where you would break down a look someone wore to an event step by step, product by product (example: Nicole Richie at a YSL event a year or so ago was an amazing post). Please start doing beauty boards more often like before and more with Kayleen as well, she's brilliant. I still wear the Prada beauty look she put together for WWWTV last year!

Great post. I'm going to CVS tonight to check out the lip stain, concealer and the Colossal mascara. Thanks for thinking of those of us still paying off student loans!

wow! i love kayleen and her ethereal glow, yet edgy sort of look with her hair and eyes. she is totally gorgeous. but now more about the post, i agree with mheflick 100% (and nobeepbeep for that matter). i have that eyeshadow, only in a bold blue (i forgot the name, though) and it is love. you guys are right, it is good for outlining. and i am considering buying those mascara's now.

Can we PLEASE keep up the beauty stories? I am a total makeup junkie (high end and drugstore) and I am sure I'm not the only one that enjoys reading about it! Also, can we please get more "budget" friendly clothing stories? As everyone else said, we r in a recession! Come on, whowhatwear I know u guys can understand where ur broke audience comes from! PS: I love this site

The blush seems to be delicious! Kisses ;) http://www.missurbanita.com

She looks like a clean breath of fresh air. If I was a guy, she'd be the standard I held all women to in regards to how I want them to look when I roll over to view them in the morning light. I myself wish I had never met Dior Show mascara because nothing else will do. However, this post gives me alternatives for my other makeup which will allow me to keep up my sick dependence on "over priced yet too yummy to let go of mascara."

Posted by: Llew |  2008-12-30 08:54:48

i love this post. its great for women who dont have money to throw away at MAC or Sephora. Def gonna have to try the Covergirl Lipstain

Posted by: stephanie |  2008-12-30 08:39:06

Second mheflick. Also, I must know, how does kayleen get her hair so voluminous yet piece-y?

Posted by: ampersand |  2008-12-30 08:11:46

I agree with the previous poster about more budget friendly stories on this site. I know there are a lot of wealthy girls out there but the economy is bad and many of us could use more "thriftiness" in our lives. I've always loved Diorshow Mascaras but i've recently had to cut back on spending and the Colossal mascara is such a great alternative for almost a fraction of the price.

Posted by: nobeepbeep |  2008-12-30 07:37:17

This is the kind of stuff that we need to see more of! I just wish there were more of these 'budget' stories for clothing.

Posted by: mheflick |  2008-12-30 07:03:43

i wish i'd read this this morning! just earlier today i was standing in the mascara isle, checking out the Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Mascara. I almost got it but instead decided on another one. Now I wish I'd chosen it. Oh well, next time....
