Beauty Board: Blue Crush
We’re not sure who is to blame—overly made-up eighties aerobics queens, perhaps—but somewhere along the line, blue eye makeup got a pretty terrible reputation. Even the most dedicated beauty fanatics we know tend to stay away from these hues, fearing that a swipe of sky blue shadow will make them look more Smurfette than chic. We’re happy to report that blue-hued makeup received a much-needed makeover this season, turning this beauty trend into an edgy, elegant look!
The second we noticed the spectrum of blue eye makeup on the spring runways, we had a hunch we had a breakout beauty look on our hands. After all, the trend runs the gamut from dramatic sapphire shadow to simple cerulean liner, so it’s easily customizable. One simple way to work the color into your regular makeup routine is to simply create a smoky eye using navy blues, instead of charcoal or gray. Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury came up with a strong example of this look for the Temperley London Spring 09 show. She used a number of MAC products, including Fluidline in Waveline
($15) and Eye Kohl in Smolder
($14.50) to create the stormy eye.
While the Temperley runway look obviously called for a liberal application of color, you can easily achieve a more wearable version. As Kate Hudson showed us at the Bride Wars premiere, instead of blending the shadow to the far edges of the eye, just confine it to the lids. By using less product, you’ll still look sexy and fashion-forward, but in an appropriate way. (If the style’s still too strong for you, simply swap out the midnight blue shadow for one that’s lighter and more gray-based.) In addition to Tilbury’s selections, we also like Revlon’s amazing new Matte Eye Shadow in Riviera Blue ($4.99) or Make Up For Ever’s Eyeshadow in True Blue 8
($19).
If you prefer a bright pop of color to a subtle, soft, and smoky look—you’re in luck too. Bold beauty mavens, we’d like to direct your attention to the high-impact aqua lids shown at Gucci. Created by the incomparable Pat McGrath using CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 1 Kit Eyeshadow in Turquoise Tempest
($3.47) and Bobbie Brown Mettallic Eye Shadow in Mint
($20), this statement-making style is definitely not for shrinking violets! If you’re ready to try the over-the-top tropical eye, make sure balance the vivid shadow with lots of black mascara and liner too. McGrath used Prescriptives Softlining Pencil in Jet
($17.50) and a a lash-pumping mascara like Chanel's Cils a Cils Lash Building Mascara in Noir
($26) or Max Factor's 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper Mascara in Extreme Blackout
($10).
If you simply want the spirit of the Gucci look, without quite so much shadow, take a page from Agyness Deyn’s beauty notebook. Seen here at the Louis Vuitton Tribute to Stephen Sprouse party, Deyn kept her electric blue liner far from her browbones, choosing to wear a smaller sweep in a modified cat-eye style. Sephora Brand’s Jumbo Pencil Eyeliner in Blue 508Y
($5) will do the trick; we like L’Oreal’s HIP Color Rich Cream Eyeliner in Teal
($12) and Midnight Blue 
($12) very much too. Either way, we just hope you experiment with some new colors and give this look a chance. Who knows, you just might end up having a blue crush too!

What the hell? Blue totally works on dark skinned people, and most beauty experts recommend that brown eyed girls wear blue or purple shadow (opposites of the spectrum and so on) and blue eyed girls should apprently wear bronzey colours. What about make up for darker skin colours...? This always seems to be an issue. Sick. Of. Deyn. The top two ARE gray. How about some diversity? Since you guys just posted something that only works on girls with blue eyes and blonde hair, why don't you do a post for Asians or redheads to balance it out? I love Iekeline Stange, her the tone of her shade is really great too, a little metallic. i've never worn blue on the lids, i am excited to experiment!! Thanks for another beauty story, and for showing that blue CAN be done right when it comes to eye makeup! And brown eyed girls? You forgot about us??? the best palette for the bright version of this look is the POP eyecolor palette in aqua it has 5 shades of blue (1 periwinkle, 2 teals, 2 true blues)- i've been rocking this out for years and you get that pop of color without looking too 80s since there's some teal in the colors I think I would prefer this look with green instead of blue. But brown-eyed girls look great with blue shadow.
