Beauty Board: Barbie Lips

Like most little girls in America, we were raised on a steady diet of Berenstain Bears books, Big Bird, and Barbie. Of this trio of childhood favorites, the buxom blonde was certainly the most influential and inspirational. Of course we were impressed by her crazy career (Astronaut! Doctor! Artist!), reality-defying flexibility, and enviable lifestyle, but what really hooked us was something simple: her pretty pink lipstick. Whether it was a pale carnation hue or hot magenta, Barbara Millicent Roberts always worked some wonderful shade to great effect. It seems that Barbie's lipstick preferences still have a strong presence, as we've noticed that many modern beauties like Drew Barrymore, Chloe Sevigny, and Taylor Momsen are reaching for similar shades. Apparently, the must-try makeup mantra this spring is: think pink!

As you might have noticed, pink lips are popping up on red carpets galore these days. Sometimes the look is pseudo-pastel; we love these slightly chalky, semi-retro shades. Chloe Sevigny wore this super pale pink to a Kiehl's party in honor of the Doe Fund earlier this month. She slicked on Yves Saint Laurent's Pure Lipstick ($30) in 22 Pink Celebration and a few coats of mascara for a fresh-faced early-sixties beauty look. Drew Barrymore also has turned up in a similar shade at the He's Just Not That Into premiere earlier this year. Combined with her winged black eyeliner and perky ponytail, the light lip is sweetly sophisticated.

Of course, if you'd prefer more of a statement lip or think this bubble-gum hue won't work with your skin, you can just slide down the pink-pigment scale to a more saturated color. Anja Rubik chose a medium pink for an amfAR Gala during New York Fashion Week. Unfortunately for web shoppers and Americans, Rubik's product of choice was the Lip Duo by Inglot, a European brand that's not sold online. We recommend Shiseido's Perfect Rouge Lipstick ($25) in PK307 Tourmaline for a similar effect.

The boldest way to wear Barbie Lips is to opt for a product that falls under the fuchsia or shocking pink umbrella. Taylor Momsen and Camilla Belle both reached for these strong shades recently. Belle chose Versace's Sensual Glam Full Volume Lipstick ($21) for a "Diamonds in Africa" event at the Chateau Marmont (try Benefit Cosmetics' Lipstick ($18) in My Treat), while Momsen elected to wear a combo of NARS Lipstick ($24) in Schiap and Lip Lacquer ($24) in Hot Wired for the private dinner for Topshop's Flagship opening. Momsen's lip look is one of our favorites: it riffs on her ballet-pink skirt and adds vibrancy to her overall look.

In addition to the shades our spotlighted ladies wear, we found a few more hues for you. As we've mentioned before, we simply adore Revlon's new Matte Lipstick ($7), particularly in Pink Pout, shown above. It's a serious lipstick—matte, but creamy—definitely perfect for the lighter look. If you're interested in a brighter look, try Guerlain's Rouge G de Guerlain Jewel Lipstick ($45) in Gaela or Giulette. The lipstick's a bit of a splurge, sure, but they're both great shades and the packaging is marvelous (the cap transforms into a pretty little mirror). Barbie would totally approve!

this looks rad with dark hair also, inglot 151 is sheer enough or with lipgloss over the top. it's a sick look with natural or dramatic eyes too, same with a lavender colour.

LOVE LOVE LOVE pink lips ... M.A.C has great pink lipsticks for ALL skin colors. I like the matte look for the day and then a layer of sparkly gloss on top for the evenings.

Lovin' the pink lips. However, not a clue as to what shade would flatter a brown girl such as myself :(

2 other great shades: NARS Roman Holiday (a perfect inbetweener) and YSL's new creamy lipstick (the one in that amazing packaging with the mirror on the tube) in #1, which is slick looking but not overly pink.

I love pink!! It;s an amzing color and just rad on lips.. BUT have to be careful, you need good skintone otherwise looks just trashy.. http://inyourfacefashion.blogspot.com/

Once again Camilla Belle looks absolutely stunning in the trend of the moment. Gorgeous!

I love this but on other people, every time I put it on I do feel like a barbie but not in a good way. It must be to much with my blonde hair I thought, but then most of your lovely ladies are blonde. I shall try again! www.gameonfashion.wordpress.com

I agree with crystal, Snob from Mac is a great shade of pink. I use it a lot since it's not too bright.

Mac's "snob" lipstick is great too! It's a lot like Drew's look shown here. Very mod!
