If you care to look back, dear readers, you’ll remember that last summer a milky tidal wave of
white sunglasses crashed upon our shores. Well this year that pallor is going to be replaced with nearly neon and brazenly bright frames in shades of corn yellow, mango, and ultramarine.
The trend has already taken off amongst the celebrity crowd, as many famous faces are ditching their basic black shades and starting to hide behind colorful frames instead. The eternally fashion-forward Mary Kate Olsen is an early adapter, per usual. She was spotted scampering between shows during Paris Fashion Week wearing orange crush-worthy shades. Sienna Miller is also caught up in the color frenzy and prefers her sunglasses in a sharp turquoise. We can’t help but think this particular shade shall be the breakout hit as we roll into summer. Our reasoning is as thus: Karen Walker is offering insanely cute frames in the perfect bright blue
and that color really shows off a tan (a good thing, in our book). The blues aren’t your only option of course, as Rachel Bilson showed the world recently. She chose to wear classic Raybans in a ruby red shade while running errands in LA. You can also opt for a decidedly non-mellow yellow, per Posh’s example. Victoria Beckham showed off her frames in a sunny shade of yellow during playtime in a Beverly Hills park with her kids last week.
Many of our favorite Spring 08 runways also showcased colorful frames. We saw fantastic options at Marni, the aforementioned Karen Walker, and Karl Lagerfeld, to name a few. DKNY, Louise Goldin, Miu Miu, and Loewe also showed hints of bright frames, furthering our point that this is a pervasive trend in the making.
You don’t have to buy designer sunglasses to get this look—though, of course, you can—because enticing options abound at many different price points. Neither the DNA
Cowboy Aviators ($38) in dark orange nor Jeepers Peepers
Teddy Sunglasses ($24) in blue or green will break the bank. Shades lovers might want to spring for one of Karen Walker’s sweet pairs. We particularly love the bright blue of her
Deep Freeze Sunglasses ($170), as well as the shape and color of Walker’s
Super Strength Sunglasses in Corn Yellow ($300).

Mk is the best as usual

i think bright colors look better when the frames don't look so cheap maybe? i heard mary kate changed her sunglasses three times in one day at fashion wk! she annoys me because she always attempts to hide her teeth. quit being so damn self-conscious and have a good time!

Marina, don't be so stodgy... Fashion is so harum-scarum now that nothing is ever really a "trend," recent emergences have even been able to survive the celebrity curse. It seems to be an extension of the wayfarer look...and Chloe Sevigny gave us that more than six years ago... I say YEAHHHH! GO, GO, GO! to more practical impracticality, nothing ever goes out of style!

i think this is a mediocre trend at best which is bound to make a LOT of money by selling a lot of (cheap) glasses i won't forgive someone who calls this cutting edge style

Who makes VB's? It's St. Patrick's Day... I didn't comprehended. I like hers the best. They suit her face quite nicely. The others are fun but wouldn't be worth the ridicule.

I got a pair of white that has the shape like SM's glasses. They make me look like I'm from the 70's in Asia with my floral dresses

lucite is the way. still there i not a need to feel bad about your vintage black/tortoishelle (sp) apologies i'm french. my personal opinion is that copied sunnies are just as fine as the originals. what i believe is truly a shame is a fake handbag. just buy the original please! or buy something else.

would rather spend a couple hundred on some tom fords..

Ahh so tired of this trend! I liked them in the neutral palette for last year...but now I'm sick of it! Isn't it time to retire this trend pleasee..!

omg mks jacket is INSANE..wow i cannot get over it. and they have these sunglasses at forever21 for $5.80, my friend and i were bored in the mall the other day and decided to have a little photoshoot with the yellow and blue ones. they have tacky little diamonds on them so as someone said bellow me, it screams "fashion victim".
Posted by: kati | 2008-03-15 11:41:24
Ugh! Tacky! In NYC, this trend screams "Fashion Victim!" on anyone who's over 12 or not a 10th Ave hooker.

I don't like this trend at all........... First of all, you'd have to find a colour that flatters your skintone, and a frame that flatters you face shape.. All for a trend that won't last 2 weeks.

this style is getting way overdone these days unfortunately

I think I'll skip this trend - they all look a little ridiculous to me. I tend to agree with "tampham" - that these seemed more suited for the teeny bopper set. I think the only brightly colored frames I'd consider sporting would be ones with a thin frame, similar to what VB has on.
Posted by: s | 2008-03-14 13:19:13
got some already. they're overdose in the us, but fortunately not in allemagna, yessssss

Did anybody hear Bilson is launching a clothing line soon? Ummmm, how's that gonna work when her look is basically Ashley Olsen? Yeah... I'm guessing there are going to be a few horribly contrived "staples" in her collection in a pitiful attempt to distance herself from the Olsen look. Wow, I'm so negative here...lol I like the trend, actually...I like it a lot but I won't spend a dime more than $5.00 for them...They've been featured on the House of Field site for months...for, you guessed it, $5.00 lol

I think colored frames scream TEENAGER. Black and tortoise are so much more sophisticated and classic. http://tampham.blogspot.com

I love this trend especially in ice cream colors and the cat eye silhoutte. Check out my blog http://omowrites.blogspot.com Thanks!!

I don't like this trend. Yes, it's apparently a fresh concept (really not because the 80's version could be bought for like 5 bucks), but with attire that is supposed to be taken seriously (like the balenciaga jacket that Mary-Kate is wearing) it just looks silly. If you simply must be "bold" in your fashion choices, the rest of the outfit should be more light and carefree. Out of all of these, the Karen Walker purple lenses are the most flattering. The rest...are simply not.

I'm glad WWWD offered inexpensive versions because this is a trend that probably won't last long, kind of like the candy colored jeans craze...

I love all of them. Colors are amazing... and summer is the perfect time to show it all off. Good for you wwwd! I will most definitely be buying a pair or two (or three!)
Posted by: mahogany | 2008-03-14 06:55:16
Love MK's and Bilson's. Such a shame though - I don't feel quite ready to retire my black/tortoiseshell and white wayfarers just yet (yes, i bought all three). Think I may have to stick to a more neutral pallette this summer! www.knittingalovesong.blogspot.com

why does it seem like all WWWD posts start with the phrase "dear readers"? can't you come up with another lead?
