This Ankle Boot Trend Is Definitely Not for Wallflowers

Black ankle boots are certainly a beloved staple for fall and winter, but they aren't exactly the most interesting footwear choice. That is, of course, unless you swap garden-variety versions for something a bit more daring. Enter the trend Net-a-Porter's online magazine, The Edit, explained in a recent issue: Victoriana boots.

"Want to tone down the theatrics of a lace dress?" The Edit writes. "Then ground it with something a little more sturdy, like a black ankle boot that’s part pilgrim, part witch (in the best possible way)." The hallmarks of the boots: Victorian-inspired buttons or lacing and, in some cases, avant-garde curved heels. If you want to get in on the trend, Net-a-Porter has a whopping 33 different styles under the Victoriana boots category—here, we've narrowed them down to our favorite five pairs. While these are pricey investments, to be sure, they just might inspire you to step outside your comfort zone when it comes to ankle boots.

Erin Fitzpatrick
Senior News Editor

Erin got her start as a Who What Wear intern over 12 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of senior news editor (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
