Let’s face it: Once the temperatures start to dip, it’s more tempting than ever to defer to an all-black uniform consisting of the same oversize sweater and coat every day. Don’t get us wrong—we love the moody hue just as much as the next girl, but it’s easy to fall into a style rut when you’d rather spend day in and day out in knitted sweaters. So what’s a fashion girl to do?

“Stepping out of your comfort zone is so important,” explains blogger Naty Michele, who admits she’s guilty of leaning too heavily on darker shades during the chillier months. “My initial instinct is to wear black or dark blue, but to keep your style fresh, you have to try different combinations,” she says.

To tempt you with some non-black ensembles, we’re rounding up tips Michele swears by for refreshing your fall look from head to toe—beauty routine included. From unexpected color combinations with her go-to pieces from the Who What Wear collection to relying on seasonally appropriate accessories, the blogger’s simple tricks will help you see fall styling in a whole new light.

Don't Be Afraid to Experiment

Michele explains that it’s important to be open to trying out different styles and silhouettes. “I never used to be a fan of low chunky heels, but I had to make an exception for these two-toned cap-toe ones,” explains Michele. “Style is all about not being afraid to switch things up.”

Lean Into Seasonal Accessories

When a true style rut comes along, remember that you can turn to your accessories to punch up an outfit, the blogger advises. Michele’s go-to add-ons? “Aside from my current choker obsession, I live for hats, especially wide-brim ones,” says Michele.

Accentuate the Right Details

As every fashion girl knows, no stylish outfit is complete without an on-trend third piece, especially during the winter. We love that Michele opted for a sleek cardigan here—camel makes any outfit look more expensive, and it adds instant panache to your look.

Once you’ve got your third piece down, don’t forget about your hair. “I typically style my hair based on the overall vibe I’m going for,” says Michele. “When I wear my hair wavy, that extra volume makes me feel more fierce and confident, so I always have a spare Dove Refresh Dry Shampoo ($4) on hand so I can touch it up on the go.”

Similarly, it’s also important to pay attention to your skincare routine during the winter. Since Michele suffers from chronic dry skin, she’s especially diligent about taking care of it during the colder months. Her go-tos? Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Radiant Lotion ($8), which helps keep her dry patches at bay, and Simple Micellar Water ($9), which removes makeup and gives skin an extra-hydrating boost at the end of the day.

Test Out Fall's New Neutrals

If you feel most comfortable shying away from wearing too much color, take a cue from the fashion world and expand your horizons to some of the new shades being worn as neutrals these days. “I don’t see it done too often, but I really love the mix of burgundy, tan, and blue,” explains Michele. “In my opinion, these colors are the perfect substitute to black and gray because they’re just as versatile.”
