Runway to Real Way/Proenza Schouler
There are always a few words that come to mind when we think of Proenza Schouler, primarily stellar descriptors like: sleek, sporty, and majorly modern. Our adjective associations were spot-on again this season, as designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez whipped up a wonderful spring collection. The duo presented a grittier look-albeit one that's infused with their interpretation of eighties glam-sensationally. With Proenza Schouler on the brain, we set out in pursuit of pieces that share the same feisty spirit, but at fantastic-for-all price points. Fortunately, the obsession paid off. Read on for our favorite powerful pieces and glossy, flirtatious accessories, all of which are sure fire ways to achieve a Proenza Schouler-inspired style, inexpensively.
1. H&M Leather Corset Top ($80)
One of Proenza Schouler's signatures is the bra-cup top or bodice, the former of which was updated this season in black leather and paired with high-waisted tapered trousers. We think you can achieve a similarly strong look with H&M's leather corset top, as it evokes the same tough and alluring vibe.
2. Topshop Drop Side Cami by Boutique ($80)
The drapey, cascading cut and bold cherry color of this viscose top perfectly encompasses the confident, eighties-reminiscent looks at Proenza Schouler's S/S 09 show. The flowy silhouette is reminiscent of the dolman sleeves seen on some of the runway looks, plus, it's a perfect piece for transitional layering.
3. Forever 21 Journey Bracelet Set ($5)
Many of the outfits at Proenza Schouler were accessorized with layers of cool black bracelets, so this set of ten skinny bangles is a fitting salute to that style. Just slip this textured and sleek stack of bracelets onto your wrist and you'll add some runway attitude to any outfit.
4. Topshop Harem Trousers ($65)
Hernandez and McCollough participated in spring's harem-pant craze via a variety of loose trousers and jumpsuits. This smooth pair from Topshop are a close match to the high-end Proenza Schouler look, thanks to a generous structure and light gray color.
5. Essie Nail Polish Lacquered Up ($9)
Our budget-friendly take on Proenza Schouler wouldn't be complete without a beauty element, so we are delighted to put forth this eye-catching crimson polish. The statement shade is not only new, it's also super similar to the runway's candy apple-colored patent gloves.
6. Bakers Lenna Sandals ($80)
Our beloved Bakers has done it again and created a must-have shoe at a must-buy price. These sweetly stylish heels are quite evocative of the futuristic Patent Bracket Sandals ($1695) designed by Hernandez and McCollough. They are a chic update to the ongoing gladiator trend and will put the finishing touch on any Proenza Schouler-inspired look.
7. LNA Zipper Pocket Tee ($74)
All of the sharp edges and zipper details in the spring show added to the collection's edgy look. You can incorporate a similar industrial vibe into your ensembles with this awesome t-shirt from LnA. The subtle zipper facet is a cool update on the brand's notoriously comfy t-shirts.
8. ASOS Quilted Heart Across Body Bag ($30)
Proenza Schouler's S/S 09 collection featured some of the season's best accessories. In addition to falling for their excellent round sunglasses, we're also coveting the mini purses from the runway show. Since most of us can't fork over rent money for a bag, we are thankful for the this like-minded, heart-shaped patent purse. It's equal-parts hardcore and sweet, and thus an exemplary fit for your own Proenza Schouler ensemble.-Jessica Amento
