From flapper dresses in the '20s all the way to Anne Hathaway's swingy, silver Oscar de la Renta gown at the Oscars earlier this year, fringe is never far from the spotlight. Inherently eye-catching and definitely made for dancing, it's no wonder why Hollywood heavyweights and top tastemakers adore a fringed frock. So what's unique about today's iteration, you might ask? For starters, unlike its more downtown cousin, Rocker Fringe, this look is decidedly flirty and elegant. Chic in silver, breathtaking in black, and brilliant in bold colors, this frayed accent is the ideal option for your next big bash. Need more convincing? With a little help from ladies like Camilla Belle, Zoe Saldana, and Georgia Jagger, we'll show you how to step out in style in slinky fringe!
After scouring the Resort 2012 collections for inspiring looks, we knew we hit gold when we came across this Lanvin ensemble. The moment we laid eyes on the multi-colored, swinging frock, we were convinced that slinky fringe is a must-have this season! With its embellished halterneck, ultra-short hemline, and ombre coloring, this dress makes quite a stunning statement.
Aside from Lanvin's ravishing rendition, we love how today's quintet of tastemakers interpreted our trend du jour. Camilla Belle and Georgia Jagger, for example, both chose knee-length, metallic ensembles that were equally glamorous. The former was snapped at a Salvatore Ferragamo event in Moscow back in October wearing a head-to-toe look from said fashion brand, which included the Cream Beaded Nautical Stripe Knit Top ($2800, 800.628.8916) and Cream Beaded Skirt ($9900, 800.628.8916). A short-sleeved t-shirt isn't an expected choice for a night out, but Belle's glittering iteration perfectly complements her fringed skirt, resulting in a fresh twist on evening dressing. Belle also chose unfussy accessories, namely Salvatore Ferragamo's White Suede Pumps with Silver Cap Detail ($675, 800.628.8916) and Gold Beaded Miniaudiere ($2750, 800.628.8916), which added a touch of sophistication without stealing the spotlight from her sensational skirt-and-tee combo. Jagger also went with a silver ensemble at the British Fashion Awards in London last month. She opted for a flapper-esque Julien MacDonald dress replete with tiers of glistening, fancy fringe, which she accented with only a pair of emerald pumps, allowing her fringed number to take center stage.
Belle and Jagger provide two excellent options for wearing this trend, but if you want to take it a bit further and experiment with some more adventuresome styles, simply reference the outfits Zoe Saldana, agent Jen Brill, and model Anne Vyalitsyna put together recently. Saldana attended a Lanvin event in Los Angeles last month wearing a vividly hued Lanvin fringed frock, which she accented with a statement necklace and ankle-strap heels. We think Saldana's eye-catching combination of the look-at-me pink color plus the standout necklace equals a truly unforgettable ensemble! Snapped at a celebration for the new Saks Fifth Avenue Emilio Pucci Boutique in New York last month, Brill also put a colorful spin on today's trend. She made quite the entrance in a printed Pucci number with zigzag tiered fringe-the fashion house's Dyed Fringe Print Dress ($2245) is a very similar version-and Chanel shoes. We commend Brill for pulling off such a daring frock-and making it look easy to boot! Last but not least, we adore the way Vyalitsyna addressed slinky fringe at the after-party for the film W.E. in New York earlier this month. The Russian model donned Kevork Kiledjian's Fringe Dress with High Collar ($1047), which she paired with a furry jacket. While the frock's thigh-high slits make it a bold after-dark option, Vyalitsyna decision to add a cropped jacket ensured that her outfit wasn't too revealing, resulting in one perfectly balanced, high-glam ensemble!
Dying to get your hands on a slinky fringe number? We have a feeling you'll fall in love with our top-notch selection of skirts and dresses, all of which are perfect for the holidays! If you want to experiment with colorful fringe a la Saldana and Brill, we suggest picking up eDressMe's Yellow Flapper Dress ($68) or Jen Kao's Fringe Skirt ($697)-either of these bright choices is sure to turn heads! But if you'd prefer to take a subtler approach, we wholeheartedly recommend Theory's Back Palonia Fringed Silk Dress ($726), Free People's Fancy Fringe Dress ($228), Of Two Minds' Dasy Fringe Dress ($794), and Kimichi's Blue Daisy Dress ($129), all of which are supremely wearable interpretations of today's trend. Finally, if Lanvin's ombre dress tickles your fancy, be sure to snag Dress Up by Topshop's Ultimate Fringe Bodycon Dress ($150), as it's a spot-on alternative to the runway version. Now that you have a new slinky fringe ensemble, all that's left to do is take your new look for a spin on the dance floor!-Erin Fitzpatrick
